FFVII REMAKE CONFIRMED

This might be an unpopular opinion, but whoever is voicing Cloud in that trailer did a better job of the Cloud I've had in my head for 22 years than Steve Burton has in the past. I've always thought Steve could pull off actual!Cloud in the remake which is one of the reasons I was still inclined to believe it was him, just with a better understanding of the original character. But I guess the indicators right now are that it's definitely not him?

Time will tell I suppose.

To be fair, George Newbern hasn't taken down that he's the voice of Sephiroth down from his twitter profile yet either. It's really too early to say things, don't you think?

but if VAs have changed, keep in mind that this isn't the first time SE has done this, and it's not like it was for the worst. I mean, I still cringe when I hear Mena Suvari in Advent Children and KH2.

I feel like Burton might have gotten actual voice acting lessons this time around.

You can unlock test outtakes of Burton's Cloud in Duodecim, which are way different and in my eyes, better. It's definitely the direction he's told to go in all dour and stuff. Regardless I've been happy with Burton, if you play Dissidia Cecil and Firion sound like every generic anime protagonist I've ever heard, Cloud sounds like Cloud. Could've easily been the other way around. But this new guy sounds good and I'm hoping they keep him.

I have always thought Burton sounded much worse in Dissidia than in his other appearances, in which he seemed to improve with each subsequent performance. The Dissidia games in general seem to have really lousy direction, see also that whole thing with Kuja.

So with good direction, I would be happy if Burton continued to play him, but I would not be super upset if it were someone else either. But I did think Newbern is a good Sephiroth, and as I've stated, I really wanted to see what Billingslea could do with Barret's heavy story arc.

I think whoever is playing Sephiroth is definitely trying to sound like Newbern, especially with the way he enunciates "Cloud."

And yeah there was a whole thing with Kuja where the actor got all this negative feedback and said the only direction he received was to sound "breathy and feminine," then read fans' detailed descriptions of the character and said he'd try to carry that knowledge into the next game. So yeah, someone along the chain of command doesn't really care about the voice direction in Dissidia, I guess. Even some of the more established characters that have had voices from the start like Lightning don't sound quite as good, imo. Though JAT seemed to do fine with Tidus.

I just can't get why they'd have Steve Burton and George Newbern reprise their roles as Cloud and Sephiroth in Dissidia NT and Mobius Final Fantasy(for the Final Fantasy VII and Remake Events only last year and ect) and yet not have them in the Remake...

Unless the English Directing guys decided to do the Disney approach with the Live-Action Remakes of films like Aladdin(with Iago's Original Voice not voicing him in it) and the Lion King(with only the Original voice of Mufasa reprising his role) and want new fans to not look into the past or something silly like that...Which I think is stupid. I much prefer the original English cast from Advent Children, but I guess it wasn't to be with the Remake, which is sad.

Again, Tashasaurous, a bit too early to assume the worst, don't you think?

You know what's funny is that Cecil and Firion are voiced by Yuri Lowenthal and Johnny Yong Bosch...who happen to be very prolific anime voice actors. :awesome:

Well, that's true. But we can't really say it's a placeholder either. I think we'll find out sometime this month and maybe next month...if not today like Beau mentioned yesterday and George being very vague which isn't a good sign.

Though speaking of Johnny Yong Bosch(and the first time I've seen him was the original Power Rangers TV show plus the Mighty Morph Power Rangers movie where he was Adam/the Black Ranger) and a bit off topic, he was recently in the Super Smash Bros Ultimate game.

He was in AC and DC wasn't he?

Have I misremembered this?

No, you're right. Cait Sith was in Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. He was even briefly playable in the latter.

No you're correct, but there has not yet been a version of FFVII released where he has a scottish accent, so I'm being a cheeky bastard as usual. I kind of imagined him sounding like a cross between Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse.

It makes sense to have him be scottish, because his name comes from Celtic folklore. It's simply that the written english dialogue has no hint of accent, as Barret's or some others. In fact, at the end of Disc II he kind of starts talking like he's from the southern USA.

Cait Sith
Doncha worry none, Marlene's in a safe place. She's with Aeris' mama.
Barret!!
What was that scratching just now!?
As long as Marlene is safe, who cares what else happens, right?
I been itchin' to say this to ya fer a while now!
When ya blew the Midgar No. 1 up, how many folks d'ya think died?

Barret
...that was for the life of the planet. Ya gotta expect a few casualties.

Cait Sith
A few? Whaddya mean 'a few'? What may be a few to y'all is everythin' to them who died......
Protect the planet. Hah! Y'all sure sound good!
Ain't no one that'd go against ya. So ya think ya can do whatever y'all want?

Barret
I don't wanna hear that from no one in Shinra...

Cait Sith
......nuthin' I can do 'bout that...
Cait Sith
......Wonder what that Sephiroth feller's up to?
Cait Sith
I can't 'pologize to y'all enough.
If I was just a bit more o' a better feller Ain't none of this woulda happened...

Anyway, he'll be scottish don't worry. I wonder if they'll double-down and pronounce his name "Ket-Shee"?

1:36 - 2:17 in the Cait Sith analysis video reflects my emotions whenever somebody brings up "Ket-Shee". :monster: Since it's spelled "Cait Sith", I will always pronounce it Cait Sith as well. Naturally if you have a different preference, you go you.

While none of the games or movies have ever spoken out loud the full pronounciation, Cid does say "Cait" and not "Ket" in Dirge of Cerberus. This could easily change in the future of course, just bringing it up because it's one of those moments that even I can easily forget.

As someone who is actually Scottish and knows the Gàidhlig pronounciation of the mythological figure, I still say "Kate Sith" because that's how I read it when I first played this game at the age of 7. I have no problem with people pronouncing it the way they want to, but it does feel weird to me when people are trying to be "too accurate" and pronounce the Scots. Given that when said in proper dialect it sounds less like "Cat shee" and more like an analogue to "cashier".

I suppose it'll be interesting to see how this is handled in the remake.

As for his dialect - they could have kept him southern US and it wouldn't have mattered, but Scottish is fine too. The point of him having an accent at all is to differentiate him from the other characters, and it's supposed to be a key indicator that he is connected to Reeve (whose accent stands out too). Sadly this was completely lost in the original game. And then in Dirge Reeve just has a standard American accent while Cait Sith is Scottish. Sigh.
