If they just came out and said something: "Sorry, it won't be at E3.", "Sorry, we're moving it to next gen." I wouldn't be mad. It's the silence.

The Final Fantasy series has been in incompetent hands for more than a decade. It's hard to be disappointed when the expectation was never there /shrug

As reported by hian over at discord:

This is a dramatic drop for such a short time.

The press connfrences we’re doing pretty welll, the Squares came up and.... maybe we where expecting too much from them?

I’m pretty bumbed there wasn’t anything shown. You’d think with Tifa concept art leak and the Airbuster that maybe they were leaving a paper trail, but nope.

@Shademp - yeah I saw that, that’s fucking nuts. Hopefully a wake up call to them.

Re: Stock price. A bit of perspective. It was lower a month ago. Square's worth is still >4x bigger than it was 5 years ago. I'm surprised the hit is so minimal myself. I guess they have a diversified portfolio of projects enough to keep their shareholders otherwise happy :awesome:.

Why is Tetsuya Nomura in charge of this project? Didn't they learn from Final Fantasy XV - the reins of which ended up being handed over to someone else - and Kingdom Hearts 3, both of which took over a DECADE to finish? Does he have compromising material on someone at the top? I seriously don't understand it.

I remember reading that Nomura had wanted to turn XV into a musical after watching Les Miserables, and that was released at the end of 2012! So six years into the project, he didn't have a clear plan or vision of what he wanted for XV. Is the remake going to be the same?

Kingdom Hearts 3 hasn’t taken a decade to finish. It started development around 2012-2013. Also Nomura has stated in the past that there was video content of the Remake he wanted to share but higher ups wouldn’t let him. So I don’t think it’s fair to pin the dearth of content updates/news on Nomura in this case.

Yeah, at the end of the day, there's just one Tetsuya Nomura. I still think I'd rather have someone connected to the original directing the Remake than someone who wasn't. Since KH3 is nearly finished, the focus can be on FF7 Remake now.
Also a blessing in disguise it took this long for KH3 to finish since Hikaru Utada was in hiatus for quite a while until coming back recently.

I really don't understand this at all. I know FFXV sold decently, but there is no way it's turned a net profit after being 10 years in development. Even with the DLC sales, there's no way. The only way I can see that game paying for itself is if you take merchandising and the longevity of DLC, HD ports, etc.

The FF7 Compilation seems to be abandoned and forgotten about. I get the impression that they realize that it's largely shit. The most successful entry was directed by Tabata, who was also the one that ultimately took over XV and made it into a deliverable product.

The Kingdom Hearts series has been going a lot stronger than the FF series, but even then - the lore is a subject of mockery. The story is a mess. Only hardcore have really kept up with the narrative. Most people have either selectively dipped in and out, or given up completely between the main installments.

I just... don't understand why they continue putting this guy in charge of projects. He's not a good director. His character designs/visual development is okay if you are into a shounen jump kind of aesthetic. Even then, it's tired within the context of the FF series at this point. I wouldn't be so baffled he was just delegated to a visual development role, but fucking. Stop. Putting. Him. In charge. It's a proven liability.

Obviously it's not just him, since apparently he found out he was the remake Director from a powerpoint presentation or whatever. Then it's a matter of his equally incompetent peers all patting each others backs for some god forsaken reason.

I dunno man. It's like having a friend you used to be close with, but then stopped talking because they'd drag their insufferable loser boyfriend around everywhere. Then after 10 years of growing apart, you check up on them you see that they're... still with that same shitty loser. It's depressing in that cringe sorta way.

Or perhaps the game was never in extensive development for as long as you believed and thus never had an astronomical budget.

He's put in charge because he delivers what the executives are expecting. The projects he's being involved have had overall favourable reception from critics and were never outright flops, thus he's a good director indepently of you liking his creative desicions or not.

We have been in the era of HD console gaming for 12 years. Nomura has not delivered a single HD title during that time. The first was going to be XV, before he was removed from the project.

There are countless stories of him being a perfectionist, an "untouchable" within Square Enix.

While I don't think the blame lies solely on him, I think he's a major factor. Kitase is also a factor.

Your comment is pretty random. The only thing that indicates he is a good director is that he directed all the Kingdom Hearts titles, but they've not all been well received. I and II are what put him on the pedestal he's currently on, but critically and within the fandom he's literally not directed a main console title in any franchise since 2005. His capacity as a director in the HD era is completely untested and won't be made apparent until KH3 releases in January 2019, so stop with your weird Nomura worshipping hyperbole.

??? What? We know development began in 2006/2007. There was a good 6-7 year period of split teams, mismanagement, and still releasing/promising bits and bobs of content. I am pretty sure this is well documented.

PS-PS2 era Final Fantasy was the best in its genre. Part of the answer to their inability to modernize the series has been to... Kingdom Heartsify it.

It hasn't been as colossal a failure as Sonic adapting to 3D platforming... but I can't help but see some parallels. Why break the formula for more "action oriented" content? Personal tastes comes into play yeah, but there is also a very tangible stagnation in the FF series specifically since transitioning into modern consoles. Is this all Nomura's fault? No. However, is he not one of the biggest creative forces in a company whose flagship series has been struggling for a long time? If SE was truly committed to the level of reinvention that Final Fantasy is specifically known for, then that is the first piece of fat that needs to go. His track record shows that he is better utilized making KH games.

My point is that as long as Square Enix keeps making the same moves that they have been through the last 10-15 years, then all we can do is have lower expectations. I can kinda see that a lot of people here have come to terms with that. But if that means fans are wondering if your games are going to be made at all... that's a really bad thing to be normalizing.

the key takeaway i'm getting here is that tabata is a real saviour. he made the best ffvii spin-off, he rescued type-0 from potentially being another versus xiii, and he salvaged ffxv from the quagmire it was in.

godspeed you game man, keep saving square's games from square's mismanagement

edit; oh he did the 3rd birthday too. well, the gameplay in that wasn't bad. lucky there is absolutely nothing else to talk about there, absolutely. nothing. at. all.

He's got his own studio (Luminous Produtions) now, I say let him make his own games now, he's earned it.

I am so salty. E3 was supposed to be the chosen one. The Promise Land. Instead, it ended up being North Corel.

I don't know which FMV is more appropriate for the occasion. The catastrophe of North Corel being destroyed or the blue-ball nothingness of the train just stopping. XD
