"I'm from a place called Spira, from a little village called- well actually, I don't think that matters much, now. That masked guy, he's from my world too." As he spoke, Jaiek glanced around the pub, taking note of their clothing and mannerisms. "What can you tell us about this place?"

"Shard," said shard, biting back the 'psicom division' that usually followed it. "thanks for your help back there. that was some tight casting."

he resisted the urge to ask if she was a robot, feeling it might be rude, especially as they already had some kind of giant lizard in the party.

"so," he said as they started to walk," how do you want to play this? bribery might work, or we could just introduce ourselves and ask about the chocobo eater and see how it goes from there. "i've never been much of a negotiator, open to suggestions."

"Hey, sorry, got lost in thought there, Vel. Mind if I call you Vel? And yeah, I'm up for some monster hunting."
Velkamos smiled. "Nah, you can call me that. Sorry I left you so soon. Glad to hear your up for a good hunt, though. Here, have an antidote," he finished, giving one of them to Jaiek since he noticed the hume hadn't gone to a shop yet himself. He also noticed the mutters in the place had lessened somewhat, and though people still looked wary they seemed to, once again, react better knowing that he was with humans.

Velkamos saw Jaiek had turned to what he realized was another of the comrades he'd came to this world with. He looked like a serious individual as Jaiek asked him who he was.
"I'm Yakumo. I'm originally from this world, though several years have brought vast changes to what I once knew. Where are you both from?"
Velkamos didn't try to hide his surprise. This man was originally from here? Jaiek mentioned his homeland, some place called Spira.

"I'm from a land called Ivalice. I lived in the country of Dalmasca... and since you probably don't know, I'm a bangaa. That moogle that came here with us, she's also from Ivalice," he explained. "I'm guessing you've never seen anything like me in this world?" he added as a dry afterthought.

Jaiek asked Yakumo about the place then, which caught Velkamos's interest. Any information about this world would be helpful. He then noticed Yakumo's bandaged arm.
"Hey, you're still injured? Don't you have anything to help that? I got a few potions here... take one, use it when you need to," he said, grabbing one from the pouch attached to his hip and handing it to the hume.

Yakumo slowly shook his head, inclining his head towards the other patrons of the pub who still watched them cautiously. "On this world, anything of your..." He tried to find the right word. "'Composition' ... is a ravenous monster. Apologies for that. Though your appearance doesn't startle me as much as the others."

He then turned as Jaiek continued. "What can you tell us about this place?"

"Not much I'm afraid. I come from far away from here - a secluded village called Wutai, which is almost half a world away..." His gaze began to grow distant as his thoughts turned to home, a dark expression crossing his features as the sudden thought struck him of whether his fiancee's gravestone would still be standing - now weathered and worn after forty plus years of aging.

It was Velkamos who helped break the pattern of his dark thoughts as he inquired about his injuries and handed him a Potion.

"Thank you." He said genuinely. "I will be sure to return the favour during this Quest."

The nearby town reminded Valerie of Balamb. It was cute, quite and had a decent Item Shop. :And even better, the items are all familiar.: She didn't buy anything but she did show the owner the green globes in her staff. He found a third one embedded in one of her wrist guards (it felt like a Cure draw point) told her they were called materia. When Valerie found out their was an entire shop devoted to materia, she went over there and spent a while talking with the owner and practiced magic casting so she wouldn't cast magic by accident.

When she left the materia shop, she saw a crowd of people gathered in front of the shop. Some of them were the other people she'd seen talking with Cid. Others would have fit right in with the work crews she'd been apart of in Fisherman's Horizon. The workmen had the familiar look of "I can't get anything done because something stupid is going on" written all over their faces.

"What's wrong?" Valerie asked the workman.

"Monsters attacked our construction site," one of the men told her. "But I think we've got it sorted; these guys are gonna clear out the area for us." He jabbed a thumb in the direction of the adventurers.

Valerie nodded and turned to look at her fellow travelers. :Might as well get to know them. We're all in the same boat.: There were two men and a huge lizard-like being.

"You guys wouldn't object to one more person joining you, would you?" she asked them.

"Thanks." Cindy paused for a moment to think. "The soldiers took the pup because they think he's dangerous, right? So maybe showing them he isn't would work. If they already know a chocobo eater is the one causing problems, then we could offer to deal with it in exchange for the pup. It's always best to try being nice first. If they're the really stubborn sort and that doesn't work, then we could think about stuff like bribes, though I don't exactly have much for that, kupo." Cindy would be rather unamused if she had to pay off the guards just to get them to do the right thing, especially when she's trying to conserve her remaining money for later. Hopefully, it wouldn't come to that.

"You're right" shard agreed, "I'm not sure what the WRO is, but if it's some kind of city guard, best not to take risks. i only thought of it because i suddenly realised i had an extra fifty gil I found since those wolves. not sure where it came from."

"I can't see one of those things taking a Chocobo, If they're anything like the ones in my world, they're hard to catch. Well, we'll talk to them first at least."

Round 3: Threeway

Notes from the Dungeon Master:

  • Update Schedule: So I got an action from everybody except Memphis so I'm moving on to the next round. But like I say, never feel rushed. You can perform actions and join quests in the middle. Even if a Module ends and the bulk party has moved on to the next one you can jump to join them or visit any of the areas / complete an incomplete sidequests in the old areas.
  • Quests: So you've split up into parties for quests. During quests you are locked in a sort of "bubble" where you must complete or abandon the quest before you can do the usual "town" things. Due to the nature of this RPG though most quests are fairly short. Be sure to observe the "Players In Party" while on a quest to see who is with you (players undertaking the same quest automatically party up).
  • @Clement Rage: I don't have a solo loot mechanic for reasons of trying to keep encounter spoils consistent, though you will generally earn items from your battles. However since you asked, I'll give you a freebie - Add 3 Midgar Fang Pelts to your inventory, which you can sell for 20 gil each. (If you like, you can also just add 60 gil).
  • @Minato: I just noticed you have two materia equipped under weapon but only have a 1 Materia Slot weapon, go ahead and choose one materia to unequip.

The Village of Kalm

12974397_10156877654710235_5921571747660561530_n.jpg

The village of Kalm sits on the shores of the northern sea and at the edge of the wasteland surrounding Midgar and Edge. The small grasslands community sees a fair deal of travelers and merchants – each making their way towards Edge or else out towards the lonely Chocobo Farm. While it still has the simple quaintness of a small village, the recent reconstruction efforts have brought about an economic boon as craftsmen and workers now fill up the inns year-round.

A man strolls past carrying what looks like a rolling tray. On closer inspection it appears to be a Tower Shield on Wheels.

Peculiar Merchant said:
You want to buy my pretty shield? Well I'm gettin' too old for it. The damn thing is near useless as a defensive tool but if you want it, I'll let it slide for 10 Gil.

The atmosphere inside the Kalm pub is, as expected, rather boisterous. The smell of liquor stings your nose, to say nothing a few other (and decidedly less pleasant) aromas. You notice a woman in a business suit fretting nervously as she quickly downs an ale. There's an open seat at the bar.

The barkeep, a rough-handed man with a nasty smirk behind his scrappy beard, slides a pint down to you.

You approach a farm hand just outside town with a chocobo cart.

Jealous Jockey said:
Iris sent you I bet. Yeah, she's been trying to get me to race. But to be honest, I don't know if my heart is in it anymore. I like riding and all but I prefer to gamble. Blackjack, dice, and especially betting on Chocobo Races. I like that last one for one simple reason - I almost always pick the winner!

In fact, I'll make you a deal. We can watch the races from here on the TV. I got the names of all six birds coming up. You bet on a bird and I bet on a bird. If the bird I bet on beats yours, then you have to drag yourself back to Iris and tell her that I'm out of the game for good - don't worry I'm sure she'll still pay you.

But if you win I'll go there myself. Also to make it more fun, I'll be placing 100 gil bet on the bird you choose and if you bird comes in first place, I'll give you a bonus based on their odds.

What do you say?

You make your way to the WRO headquarters, a small, reasonably modest looking building. I'm sorry, sir. We called you right away. We knew we'd need the extra muscle to take care of it.

Aged Former Turk said:
You want me to go in there and take care of some giant tub of pain so you can get into your kennels? Look it's gonna be the usual fee, plus any expenses...

You cautiously approach the Commander and inquire about the wolf pup.

Aged Former Turk said:
Don't bother talking to that one, let me explain it. We'd love to let the puppy loose. We'd also like to let loose a few boars and some other animals that the WRO captured while we were investigating. The problem is one of the things that we captured- a Midgardsormr Hatchling - got loose and they can't seem to get it under control. So they called me, a trusted WRO affiliate / bounty hunter to take care of it. But if you kiddos want to join me, you are more then welcome to join.

The aging Reno cracks his knuckles just before opening the door that leads down into the kennels. A wicked grin crosses his face.

Now four strong, the party was in an impressive shape to tackle the monster infestation problem as the group welcomed the latest arrival before being escorted to the entrance of the old facility. As Benjamin explained his need for caution, Yakumo watched as their only means of escape was bolted shut tight; leaving the group to face whatever dangers lurked inside.

It wasn't long before the monsters within made themselves known.

Having been on his own within the Wutai mountains for so long, Yakumo still found it difficult to form a bond with his new companions, or knew what it was really like to fight within a party. He hoped that he could prove useful rather than be a hindrance. Spotting the flyer, Yakumo saw his opening, locking his eyes on the target in order to follow and discern its pattern of flight as he attached an arrow to his bow. The others began to spread out around him as they chose their targets whilst he waited patiently. Finally, he let fly.

Now inside, he waited for his eyes to adjust, and began scanning the room - just as four unidentifiable creatures came out to play!

Seeing Yakumo preparing to fire at the flying creature, Jaiek eyed the rest, looking for the biggest one. Seeing one a bit slower and bigger than the others, he yelled out "The big one's mine! Cover Yakumo!" and leaped forward, bringing his claymore down towards the monster.

"think we should ask for a cut of his fee?" shard whispered to cindy on the way down to the kennels. He made a mental note to talk to the commander on the way out, see what they knew about this chocobo eater. they didn't have a big local garrison if they were hiring bounty hunters to deal with problems in their own kennels.

they rounded the corner and he saw the beast in question. it was big. it was fast, and those teeth looked sharp.

"this isn't going to be easy..."

as the other bounty hunter yelled something, Shard stepped in and jabbed at the beast as hard as he could-the opening strike could count for a lot, sometimes.

Velkamos was glad to see another of the new companions join up for the hunt; the more the better. Always makes things more enjoyable, he thought. He waved away the thanks of the other two companions over the items he gave, not feeling that they needed to return the favor or anything.
The weird land vehicle... truck, it was called, he had to ride in the large bed in the back on the ride to the facility. Ivalice didn't have such fast land travel, only chocobos.

Arriving at the facility, he could hear strange sounds coming from inside the pipes. There's beasts in there all right. His hand twitched in anticipation.

Inside the pipes it was mostly dark, but his ears found the monsters before his eyes anyway; four of them, three on the ground and one flying.
Yakumo shot at the flying one with his bow and Jaiek charged for the largest, some kind of giant flan by the looks (and sounds) of it. "The big one's mine! Cover Yakumo!"
Velkamos had a split-second thought of hesitation, not used to leaving the biggest one for someone else to tackle. It went against his inner desire to go for the strongest... but the strongest might not always be the rarest, he reminded himself. He grabbed his old oak spear, pulled his arm back, and threw it point-first at Scuttling Experiment A before grabbing his Scythe and attacking Scuttling Experiment B with it.

"Think we should ask for a cut of his fee?" Shard whispered to Cindy on the way down to the kennels.

"Definitely," Cindy replied in equally hushed tones. "He's certainly old enough to know mercenaries ought to split the profits of a shared job." One does not live to grow old by shortchanging allies, or so her time as a sky pirate taught her. She certainly saw her share of fights break out over such matters. She didn't particularly mind if it wasn't an even split, the old bounty hunter being the one originally contracted for the job, but one doesn't travel extensively by doing everything for free, either. More than anything, it was a common courtesy that could lead to longterm allies and avoid making enemies. The ones who didn't bother with such things were often trouble. Actually... "Maybe his help in getting the pup back would be enough, kupo. The soldiers seem to listen to him." A favour for a favour should be a fair enough trade, though any additional reward would certainly be welcome. Cindy made note to ask the bounty hunter if he knew anything else about the situation before he left. He seems to know about the investigation that led to this situation, after all.

The kennel doors opened and the aged hume went rushing in with an exuberant yell. A boisterous one in both speech and battle, it seems. At his reminder of the serpent's vulnerability to ice, she was quite thankful to have the spell on hand. Preparing her staff, Cindy took care to aim for its head and hopefully strike the eyes.

Action taken:

Used Ice on Midgardsormr Hatching (aiming for the head)

The Engineer
Valerie almost felt relieved to be crawling around a construction site. Fisherman's Horizon was in a constant state of repair and an monster-ridden pipe-line made way more sense then falling out of her time and space to fix other world's minor problems. :Although the ear-implant radios are cool! Maybe one of the doctors in Balamb could get it out so I could study it... If I ever get back there...:

Valerie's thought was interrupted by Yakumo firing his bow at something flying. Jaiek charged a moving ooze and Velkamos pulled off a double attack against two crab-like creatures. :Who attacks an ooze with a sword?: Valerie focused on the crackling feeling of the lighting materia and directed the energy within it at the ooze. :Let's see how well you conduct electricity shall we?:

Round 4: Birds and Battles

Notes from the Dungeon Master:

  • Attack of Opportunity: Last Round Flare decided to do something a bit unusual, which I allowed as it falls under the category of an "Attack of Opportunity". Using the environment, an advantageous position, an item in your inventory. These are all fine to do - however I will only allow one main attack and one AoO per round, so if you're fighting don't always rely on them. Gotta keep this balanced :catfight:.
  • Chocobo Races Now Open! With Nukan's completion of Race Relations, you can now bet on Chocobo races at any pub in the FF7 world. Need some gil and feeling lucky? Stop by a pub and request a race to be drawn up! Full payout for 1st place, half payout for 2nd place.
  • @Starling: All the character sprites are coming from RPG Maker MV's character creation tool and there isn't really a wrinkle option... :@

  6. Yellow Blur - Roll To Win: 1 - 19 - Winnings: 2000 gil - Your Take: 200 Gil.

Race Commentator said:
You've got three titans here, Champion's Faith always a good runner, Torrent Strider has served her time well, course my money as always is on the Bog Runner.

Race Commentator said:
Yes, but let's not count out the Yellow Blur or Reckless Legend - they've been climbing the B Rank races okay and are well on their way to stardom, but can they compete with the super stars out here today? And of course there's also Cougar Prey, a living, breathing statistical impossibility - I've never seen a bird this bad!

Race Commentator said:
A good clean race for the jockeys and a safe trip back to the stables for Cougar Prey. And they're off! Reckless Legend off on his usual early sprint - he'd better watch out - this is B Rank game, not C Rank that kind of tactic can get him outrun against the heartier birds.

Race Commentator said:
Champion's Faith and Bog Runner, neck and neck behind him... no no they've passed Reckless Legend at the bridge- his stamina just couldn't hold out. That bird is already pooped.

Race Commentator said:
Torrent Strider closing the gap, it's a run off between these three birds as they approach the crystal cave. Yes! Bog Runner has taken the lead past the waterfall... it's not looking pretty for Torrent Strider...he's out.

Race Commentator said:
Yellow Blur is picking up now, past Reckless Legend, but not quite catching up to the leaders. Oh and Cougar Prey is still at the bridge... slow and steady doesn't win the race pal.

Bog Runner has a commanding lead at the space hall, Champion's Faith going right behind him... And that's it! Bog Runner takes first place, Champion's Faith at number 2! Hell of race!

Clement Rage

Pro Adventurer
Shard's career as a mercenary l'Cie was off to a poor start, having been resoundingly outclassed by both his companions to the point of irrelevance. He tried not to let his feelings show as they left the kennels, holding his side from the strike the snake had given him. He'd been right, the thing had been fast.

"I'm glad you were with me," he told the moogle. She had more experience with mercenary work than he did, clearly, and would probably be a better choice to try to get more information out of that bounty hunter. Personally, he'd prefer to talk to that WRO Commander Pine, as locals, they might have more knowledge. But first...

"I owe you a drink. Or maybe a room at the inn, whatever." He owed her at least that, and thanks to the payments he'd just received, he could afford it fairly easily. Then he could gather whatever information there was and head out to deal with this Chocobo Eater, although the way things were going, he'd need help to achieve anything.

Starling

Pro Adventurer
"Thanks. I'm glad you're with me as well." Cindy cast a healing spell on Shard. "We can meet at the pub later, see if we can find any of our other companions there. We could all have drinks together and get to know each other, kupo. I'll be here a little longer to see what else Reno can tell us." She gave Shard a friendly smile and then made her way to ask Reno about the chocobo eater. She figured Shard would likely either find another lead on the chocobo eater issue or find the others, if they were in town.

As the lightning bolt struck his target, Jaiek swung with all his strength, feeling rather satisfied with the resulting smack of his sword through the jelly. With the oozing creature dead, Jaiek turned his attention to the one that struck at him.

"Want a piece of me? Here, try this!"

He shoulder charged the beast, aiming to hit the spear lodged in it by Vel, hoping to knock it off balance, then thrust his sword at what he hoped was its neck.

Velkamos felt a smile on his face form at seeing his thrown spear find the target, and the fact that he struck a heavy blow to the other one. The flying beast landed a hit on him and he growled at it, but Yakumo had the ranged weapon and was a sharp shooter, so he figured he'd take care of the annoying thing.

Jaiek and the magic user--Valerie, her name is?--had wiped out the oozing monster in just two hits. Heh, some strong comrades here, I like it, Velkamos though, his smile widening. Fighting got his blood rushing and tingling--it felt so good. An unusual trait for a bangaa sanga.

He saw Jaiek charge the scuttling fiend with his oak spear still stuck in it's back, and so he turned his attention once more to Scuttling Experiment B and dealt what he hoped was the finishing blow to it with his scythe.

Used attack on Scuttling Experiment B

Wow, she healed me without even thinking about herself. And I couldn't return the favour...that's it, I need to learn how to cast

But first, he needed to learn more about this Chocobo Eater. Passing by the bounty hunter standing outside, he returned to the garrison and tried to see if the WRO had any further information.

Afterwards, he went back to town and bought a Bio Materia, staying long enough for the shop owner to teach him the basics of its use.

The flier grew even more erratic and menacing in its weakened state, bloodlust in its sight as it hovered outside the normal range of the party whilst attempting to swoop in for a quick slash of its beak. Yakumo continued to focus on his line of sight, before letting off two arrows in quick succession. The first struck the side of the facility with an audible thud, causing the flier to sharply turn its angle of descent. It was in that moment that the second arrow struck where he had anticipated this to occur, hitting the creature dead on.

"Thanks, babe! I'll take you up on that, meetcha at the town entrance." Quite pleased with his progress, Nukan all but skipped back to the shops, where he laid eyes on his prize. The Clockwork Rifle he'd spotted earlier was now well within his budget. He paid off the weapon shop keeper and quickly found himself on Chocobo headed for the farms with Iris.

It was a rough ride compared to the hoverbikes he used to get around with but it sure as hell beat walking. It looks like he might be stuck on this world for a while, so Nukan focused on imaging this "golden saucer" where Chocobos rode in the sands. Surely it must be height of civilisation on this planet.

Actions Taken:
-Bought Clockwork Rifle

Round 5: Moving Somewhere Else

Notes from the Dungeon Master:

  • Question about AC / DEF: A member asked me about how I factor in AC and DEF. Here is a quick explanation. AC (Armor Class) is how many points of damage are deflected by the armor and DEF determines how many points of damage are absorbed by your own strength. They sound pretty much the same but they function slightly differently.
In the case of say a Midgar Fang with a 1d12 attack biting somebody with an AC of 3 and DEF of 10. Let's say he lands a perfect roll of 12. The AC of 3 means 3 points aren't factored in at all. Of those 9 points, 2 are blocked since the DEF is 10 (every 5 points in DEF means 1 point of life that get s protected). Ergo the final result would be 7. There are other factors that go into play - LCK, Speed of attack, proximity, and some attacks are piercing and AC doesn't come into play. But that's the general rule of it.

Choco Hand said:
You headin' to the farm? I can get you there fast and safe! Just hand over 25 gil and you can ride in back. Mind the smell though...

Cindy talks to Reno.

Bounty Hunter said:
Where am I headed next? Well for starters to that Chocobo Farm. Like I said the Chocobo Eater has been wandering around there for some time now. Somebody has to put a stop to it. They say the bounty on that beast is a whopping 1500 Gil. Good money for a pack of farmers.

Bounty Hunter said:
Well everything kind of fell apart after Meteor. There was an attempt to bring the company back after the Deepground Incident, but Rufus died a few years later. We all thought the stigma was going to get him, but in the end it turned out that he just died of a pretty bad illness. I was with him in the end. I tell you let nobody say otherwise - the man was filled with regret for everything. I just hope he's in a better place.

Anyways, I still keep in touch with some of my old cohorts. Rude is enjoying his golden years out in Mideel and bless him he's earned it. Elena's actually got her own security firm up in Icicle Inn. Haven't heard much of Tseng but I'm sure he's still kicking around somewhere. Now the WRO pretty much runs the show, so since I refuse to die, I do work for them from time to time.

Bounty Hunter said:
I'm in my 60s and still have the same skill with a rod that I ever had. Why let it go to waste? It's a good way to earn money. And, as silly as it sounds, I feel like I won't really be "old" until I stop fighting. The minute I put down the rod and pick up the knitting needle is when I think it's my time to go.

Shard talks to the WRO Officials.

Second Lieutenant said:
Chocobo Eater? Well our sources say he's a large beast-type monster with a massive head and arms roaming about on scientifically improbably small legs.

First Lieutenant said:
Yeah, and you know Beast-types. They hate fire and they hate poison. But this guy is one tough son of a bitch. They say he can run down chocobos and is strong enough to share the swamp with the Midgardsormr so you better be careful. If you want to know more, I'd head to the Chocobo Farm. We can give you a ride for free. And your partner if you'd like.

As the last beast falls, the workers come in.

Relieved Rigger said:
Wow, you guys made short work of them alright. Listen there's something going on down at the Chocobo Farm which I think you guys might be interested in. I'll take you back to Kalm so you can rest up an purchase some gear, but if you'd like to head out when you're done, just let me know!

You arrive back at Kalm.

Jaiek, Yakumo, Velkamos and Valerie have leveled up!

Each player gets 3 Stat Points and 3 Vital Points to assign where they wish. (Stat Points apply to all stats except HP / MP, Vital Points are for HP / MP)

You arrive at the scenic wilds south of Kalm. A lonely dot on the empty green exists in the Chocobo Farm - a small brick building, massive barn, tall white silo and small fenced off area adjacent to a windmill.

You see a farmer here leaning on his shovel, clearly exhausted and depressed.

(It's free, sure, just messy).

You approach the nervous farmer.

Dusty Farmer said:
Howdy... you looking to help out around here? Well Choco Sally is coming back into town soon and she can help you out there. I suspect she'll probably be back next round. In the meantime, maybe you want to make yourself useful at help me bring in this crop?

Chief Engineer said:
Whoa there chief! Looks like you found a Job. Jobs are a great easy way to spend a round earning some money, but the main benefit of doing work is that they'll directly increase your stats without the need to level up. Manual Labor? That'll boost your STR. Magical study? That's for your INT. Security / Peacekeeping boosts your DEF. Running Errands will boost your SPD. Those are just some examples. If you have some free time, say if you're waiting for your buddies to arrive, taking on a Job is a great way to bide your time!

Job: Field Work
(Help the farmer work the fields? He'll pay you 50 gil and your STR will increase by 1)

Arriving back at Kalm, Jaiek quickly ran to the shop and bought an antidote, bringing the antidote back to Vel and offering Valerie the potion. Nudging Vel with an elbow, he grinned and said to Valerie "This one taught me the value of a little friendly help, so, here ya go! Now, I dunno about you guys, but I'm down for a nice relaxing truck ride to this Chocobo Farm Benny spoke of. What do you say?"

Actions taken
-Bought 2 x Potion and 1 x Antidote
-Gave Antidote to Vel
-Gave Potion to Valerie

OOC: Should we just add the points in in a paragraph here, or should we go edit our character sheets? And am I right in saying that you already added our gil?

Edit: I'll add 3 points to HP, and 3 points to Luck
