Dark Knight of the Red Wings
Memphis spent a few days wandering around Kalm and getting to know the area. It was relaxing there and gave him a sense of familiarity. It almost reminded him of home even though he couldn't really fully remember his home. He felt bad for staying behind while his fellow party members went off to adventure but he felt he needed some time to try to get his head together.

He decided to purchase a Tower Shield on Wheels from a man in Kalm. It was a unique invention and given that he had a hard time just wielding his sword, wielding a shield would make him even more off balance. So this shield on wheels would assist greatly in defending himself. Then, he decided, it was time to move on. He would head for the Chocobo farm.

Action:

Walk to Chocobo Farm.

Shard took a moment to absorb that information. For some reason he'd been assuming they would be hunting this Midgarsormr, but this was something else.

Fire and Poison...something to remember.

Shard hesitated, between two minds. He was in pretty good shape and now had a free ride to the Chocobo farm, with his shopping done for the present. But, given his utterly pathetic showing against the baby Midgarsormr in the kennels, there would be little point in going hunting by himself. He elected to linger in Kalm until he knew what the rest of the party were doing.

Cindy thanked Reno and went back into town. That chocobo eater must be a lot of trouble, to have a bounty like that. Obviously, she'd have to make some preparations before meeting up with Shard and heading off to the chocobo farm. Now that she could afford some better equipment, she got a tome of endearment and Shinra beta. While the robes they were selling seemed more conductive to magic use, they didn't look as durable as she would've liked. With that done, she made her way toward the pub, hoping to find Shard and any other companions that might be around. With all the talk about the chocobo eater, she suspected she wouldn't see most of them until she got to the farm.

Actions taken:

Purchased Tome of Endearment

Purchased Shinra Beta

Equipped and transferred materia to Tome of Endearment and Shinra Beta

Arriving back in Kalm, Velkamos had to smile when he saw Jaiek bolt off to a shop and come back with some items, giving him an antidote. "Why thank you," he said, accepting the item and putting it in his pouch.
He saw the workers they'd helped stroll back into town, though the driver stayed near his truck, the offer still standing to take them to the Chocobo farm whenever they were ready. The murmurs about Velkamos's appearance lessened as the other workers spread news of how this group of four cleared out the pipes. Velkamos snorted to himself, feeling a bit more relaxed as the tension faded from those who looked at him now.

Jaiek soon expressed his desire for them to take the driver, Benjamin, up on his offer and head out to the Chocobo farm. Velkamos was feeling a bit tired from the earlier fight, but tried not to show it. He'd been involved in a hunt right before he was taken from his world; seems that and the strange events were catching up to him.
He happened to notice that moogle from Ivalice head into the pub, and it made him think of how much he'd like a drink.

"I'm up for heading out to the farm... though, if anyone is interested, we could swing by the pub for a drink first? Might meet up with more of those we came here with. Get to know them," Velkamos suggested, gesturing to the nearby doors.

As annoyed as Nukan was by the voice in their ears bearing orders and suggestions, it was conforting to hear Cid's confidence that his new comrades would eventually catch up with him here. And in any case, it seem far better to wait for Sally then go out and find a way past these marches and mountains alone, on foot. Given that, it was only natural to take a break for a while.

"Sure, I'll help out a bit. I dunno much about farmwork though, you'll have have to talk me through it." was the answer Dusty got from his new guest.

For many hours Nukan and Dusty went up and down the field. Whatever crisis befel this world all those years ago left most of their machinery either inoperable or abandoned out of some moral imperative that Nukan could make neither heads nor tails of. New fossil fuels based models have started showing up on the market but old Dusty could scarcely afford them. Instead the two men went to town on the field with showels, ploughs and a rusty scythe.

Aside from 50 gil, Dusty only gave Nukan fanciful stories and clean water for his work but by the end Nukan savored them more then any earnings he made as a discriminated against trader.

Valerie thought that Velkamos' idea sounded great. "I'll meet up with you at the bar in an hour or two. I'm going shopping."

The first place she stopped was the Materia shop where she bought the Poison materia she'd been eyeing ever since she saw it. She then made use of the inn's facilities before heading over to the pub.

Velkamos and the moggle were talking together and Valerie sat down next to them. "So where are you all from?" she asked.

[Wow, I made someone's sig by being too lazy to make a real post. I'm on a roll!]

Shard's grasp of metaphysics and narrative convention proved accurate, and there were already a group of his party in the pub when he got there. Heading to the bar, he bought four drinks and brought them to their table, hoping that the physiology of the moogle and the lizard would be able to absorb them.

Actions: Bought 4 pints.

Round 6: Monster Farming

Notes from the Dungeon Master:

  • NEXT MODULE: Okay guys so we are getting close to wrapping up the starting module: Module of the Beak! This has been way more popular than I expected and I am really glad you've all been enjoying it. It's a blast to DM. So for the next Module I've decided to give you all a choice on where to go to next. I have done the Skeleton Work for 3 Different Modules and you will over the course of the game visit all three of these. If, for some reason, there is an even split I may even run two modules at once - we shall see.

Here are the Modules I have planned:

  1. The Lord Manor Heist - Set in FF9, you will be teaming up with Tantalus to Robin Hood some treasures of the lowborn to help them get back on their feet. But plundering the wealthy estate requires a lot of careful planning and, of course, there's plenty else to do. This Module will be set in Treno and will grant you access to Frontier Village Dali, The South Gate, The Ice Cavern and the airship Prima Vista.
  2. The Sport of Kings - Set in FFX during Lord Braska's Calm you will be solving a mystery around the shadowy BPA (Blitzball Players Association) who has been trying change the league, banish the Al Bhed Psyches and has been seen shipping strange new machina into Luca. The Module is set in Luca and will grant you access to Kilika and Besaid Island as well as the Mi'ihen Highroad.
  3. Rubies on Rails - Set in FF8 during the war between Esthar and Galbadia, your job will be to stop a train robbery. Thieves are plundering the goods of Deling City known as The Rubies of the Unknown King and with most of the military off at war, it's easy pickings. The Module is set in Deling City and will grant you access to The Tomb of the Unknown King, D-District Prison, Timber and several trains.

  • Starling: You were actually 45 gil short on your purchase. (You had 335 Gil at the end of the prior quest, total purchase cost comes to 380) I allowed it, saying you got the hero discount, but you are out of gil ATM.
  • Also note, because I will be away on Vacation for the weekend and want to give you time to plan your attack I have jumped forward just a bit and brought you all safe (and healed) to the Chocobo Farm where Choco Sally will reveal the dungeon module to you. My apologies if this interrupts any RP-ing.

One by one you all arrive at the Chocobo Farm, and after a good night's rest, you prepare to meet with the owner of the ranch Choco Sally. She's a tall woman, with a figure sculpted from the years of hard work running with the birds. You can tell just to look at her she must be light on her feet and remarkably strong.

Well, you all are quite the rag-tag bunch of unlikely adventurer's aren't ya? You come to slay the Chocobo Eater? Well, it ain't gonna be an easy fight. It's gonna require every bit of your strength to clear his lair out in the Bog. Why I bet you've never raided a dungeon before in your life have you?

You shuffle your feet nervously, not meeting her gaze.

Ranch Mistress said:
Okay, lemme explain how this works. Dungeons have various entrance points. Sometimes this is because there are many ways to attack it and other times there are specific objectives that have to be fulfilled in order to advance. This means you'll have to split your forces. Don't worry though, everybody is going to see some action. Here... take a look at this crude map I drew up when I was scoutin' the place out.

You see you got three ways to get around to it. The beast likes to hang near his water hole at the MAIN Entrance. I recommend you heavy-armored tank bastards charge him thisaway. Now there's a REAR Entrance on top of some cliffs. Should keep you clear of the fight for the most part. This is a great place for ranged fighters and healers to enter. There is one other thing though. Somebody is going to have to go in the BOG SIDE entrance and free the chocobos the Chocobo Eater has been corralling there. The Chocobos will probably be so excited to be free they'll take a few potshots at the beast for ya, but the cage is guarded by a smaller monster of some kind so I recommend you take some folks with you. Well, prepare for battle kids. Choose where you're gonna go and we'll get this fight under way.

Suggested Actions

  1. Choose MAIN Entrance - Recommended for Tank characters / melee damage dealers.
  2. Choose REAR Entrance - Recommended for Ranged characters / healers.
  3. Choose BOGSIDE Entrance - Objective - Free the Chocobos. Recommended for Middle of the Road Characters.

That drink at the pub was good, Velkamos mused, grateful to Shard for buying him one. Today's events were entirely strange, and yet he'd so far kept busy by somehow just adapting to it and going with it. Fighting helped keep him in present time, but sooner or later he'd have to dwell on the series of events. Not now though, he hastened to add, and got out of his thoughts by listening to the Chocoboa handler talk about the Chocobo Eater and the cavern entrances.

Front entrance, rear entrance, and chocobo rescuers, he thought, already knowing which one he'd go for.

"I'll head to the main entrance. Vel, you wanna back me up?" Jaiek asked him, and Velkamos gave him a sideways look with a smile.

"I think you're the one backing me up, Jaiek," he stated, fingering the scythe blade poking over his shoulder. "I wouldn't be anywhere else but the main entrance. My hunter's soul couldn't live with it."

Action Taken:

Chose MAIN entrance.

2What in hell was in that drink?thought Shard, as he realised he had no memory of the last two days. He patted himself down, but didn't seem to be missing anything except the gil he'd used to buy the first round of drinks. Still, he wasn't going back to that bar any time soon.

I don't even feel hung over. Odd..

He gathered himself in time to listen to the explanation of how things were working out, and felt the need to speak up.

"The WRO local commander says Fire and Poison are our best bet."
Hopefully he's right, it's not like those guys could catch this thing.

"I'll back up you two" he said, to the lizard and the guy with the claymore. He didn't really feel like taking on the monster head on, but had to redeem himself after his abyssmal, showing against the baby Sormr.

As she suspected, Cindy didn't have to wait very long for one of her companions to arrive. While she'd hoped Shard would be the first so they could compare notes on their findings, she was glad to finely have a chance to talk to the Bangaa she hadn't seen since arriving in Kalm. "Hello there, I'm Cindy. We're from the same world, correct?"

After some talking, another companion arrived and took a seat at the table. "So, where are you from?" she asked. Another mage, judging by the staff. "I'm from the skycity Bhujerba. Despite being on a floating continent, it's still considered part of Ivalice. How about you?"

When Shard finally arrived, he bought everyone a round and the drinking began. Getting together like this reminded her of her nights out with her fellow sky pirates and she couldn't help but miss their company a little. She was sure she'd see them again eventually and with Cid's time travelling airship, would likely return with little time having passed since her departure. For now, she'd enjoy her present company and unwind before their trip to the farm.

It was a delightfully sunny day at the Chocobo farm. After Sally's matter of fact explanation of the situation with the chocobo eater and their options in approaching it, Cindy took a moment to enjoy the weather while she considered which path she would take. Charging the creature head on was out of the question for her and well covered by the hardier members of the group, so that left chipping away at it from the rear or freeing the chocobos. They'd have to think carefully about what teams to divide into.

"I'll take the rear entrance, I should be able to give some good cover fire with this pytpuo." The odd term caught her attention and she searched the group in an attempt to discern what it meant. In doing so, she noticed one of her companions had turned his attention to her. "You uh, best come with me, little guy." He seemed unsure how to approach her, no doubt hailing from a world that lacked moogles. Hopefully he'd get better at it with time.

"Actually, I was considering going for the chocobos, since no one seems to have voiced interest in it yet. It doesn't look like we'll be able to split our numbers evenly, so the rear entrance will likely only consist of a pair. What are your thoughts on the matter?"

[Aww Jason, you can't just derail prime character building time at the pub like that. We probably would've come up with enough material to last us your whole vacation before heading out to the farm. I was really looking forward to it, too. If anyone else is willing, I suppose we could get a little anachronistic to do that anyway even with our later actions put up. I miscalculated on the equipment and wouldn't have minded picking which of my purchases to keep to correct it. I'll try to be more careful about that in the future. I was planning on selling my old robes later so you could make it like I did that too, if it helps mitigate the discrepancy.]

@Starling: Yes, I realize that wasn't the best thing and I do apologize for anybody who felt out of place as a result. The only reason I chose to do it is because this is basically the "tutorial" module. Once you all finish this module and choose the next one the following modules have a TON of content and will be entirely character driven. I just wanted to make sure everybody learned how to:

a) shop
b) take quests
c) use the battle system
d) take jobs
e) do the pub gambling games
f) raid dungeons.

Memphis looked up nervously when Jaiek mentioned him. He wasn't very confident in his ability to try a frontal assault. He could barely handle his sword. He wasn't sure how much help he could be. His mind was full of questions and he tried to quickly swat them away. He took a step towards Jaiek.

"I'm with you."

His voice sounded shaky to his own ears. He tried to steel himself and make himself appear more confident than he felt. Hopefully he wouldn't let his companions down.
