Notes from the Dungeon Master:


  • NEXT MODULE: Okay guys so we are getting close to wrapping up the starting module: Module of the Beak! This has been way more popular than I expected and I am really glad you've all been enjoying it. It's a blast to DM. So for the next Module I've decided to give you all a choice on where to go to next. I have done the Skeleton Work for 3 Different Modules and you will over the course of the game visit all three of these. If, for some reason, there is an even split I may even run two modules at once - we shall see.
  1. The Lord Manor Heist - Set in FF9, you will be teaming up with Tantalus to Robin Hood some treasures of the lowborn to help them get back on their feet. But plundering the wealthy estate requires a lot of careful planning and, of course, there's plenty else to do. This Module will be set in Treno and will grant you access to Frontier Village Dali, The South Gate, The Ice Cavern and the airship Prima Vista.
  2. The Sport of Kings - Set in FFX during Lord Braska's Calm you will be solving a mystery around the shadowy BPA (Blitzball Players Association) who has been trying change the league, banish the Al Bhed Psyches and has been seen shipping strange new machina into Luca. The Module is set in Luca and will grant you access to Kilika and Besaid Island as well as the Mi'ihen Highroad.
  3. Rubies on Rails - Set in FF8 during the war between Esthar and Galbadia, your job will be to stop a train robbery. Thieves are plundering the goods of Deling City known as The Rubies of the Unknown King and with most of the military off at war, it's easy pickings. The Module is set in Deling City and will grant you access to The Tomb of the Unknown King, D-District Prison, Timber and several trains.

The team approaches the Bog where dwells the Chocobo Eater. As you move into position you see the giant creature - a massive head with enormous arms but tiny feet. Half of its body is its gaping mouth with a row of thick teeth. To make matters worse, the creature is mounted atop a fully grown Midgardsormr!

A sentiment that appears all too late as the creature takes notice of the group at the main gate and attacks! To make matters worse, a small band of fresh Midgardsormr Hatchlings begin to make their way to the Chocobos in the pen!

Shard felt kind of guilty about leaving Cindy to fight alone, but he hadn't been any addition whatsoever in the last fight anyway, maybe she was better off with the bounty hunter from earlier. He'd have to prove himself here, though, or else retire before he broke down at his own ineffectualness.

He charged in full of confidence beside the lizard -No, Velkamos, the name rising from somewhere in the drunken haze that was his recent memory- and had to force himself not to stop dead at the huge and improbable sight of the Chocobo Eater the WRO had mentioned mounted on a fifty foot snake!

Oh shit. We're all going to die

Not the nicest thought to have in most circumstances, but somehow he kept running, even as the snake's tongue flicked out and it turned to face them, the monster astride it baring its many, many teeth at the challengers.

The name Chocobo Eater had sounded familiar somehow, but he didn't know much about it. He'd have to trust the WRO was right, although as they had somehow not noticed the 'huge snake' part of the equation he wasn't completely confident.

Okay, calm down. Ice against the snakes, fire and poison against the Chocobo Eater

As he only had one of those things, it was a fairly easy decision, although if his information was wrong he was probably about to die. He cast Bio against the Chocobo Eater, and hoped that wouldn't be the last thing he ever did.

Actions:

Cast Bio on the Chocobo Eater.

Seeing Shard cast on the Chocobo Eater, Jaiek decided to do what he could against the Midgarsormr, and advanced slowly, looking for any sign of a possible weak spot, before taking a chance and swinging his sword diagonally at it's lower neck.

"Let's see what you're made of, buddy!" he yelled out as he attacked.

Velkamos saw the giant snake move forward, the strange Chocobo Eater astride it. What in blazes is that thing? Must be a rare beast. Both of them must be rare, he thought, starting to grin.

First things first, take out the mount.

He lunged forward, moving around Jaiek, and smashed his scythe right into it's coiled midsection.

After something of a climb up the cliffside, Nukan arrived inside the cave from the rear entrance. Their entrance being right next to the running water leading down into the pool, their passage was unheard and hopefully unseen.

The fight had gone underway, and it seemed Shard may have bitten of more then he can chew. Nukan knew nothing of these serpent creatures, but knew all too well the strength that lay in a Chocobo Eater's arms and jaws. Perched above the battle, Nukan and Valerie could interfene any number of ways. Nukan'd like to focus on healing Shard's wounds as they got inflicted but no blows had landed yet however so best he can do is draw the Chocobo Eater's attention, keep him off balance. Nukan drew his rifle, lay down and lined up his shot. Let's see what this bad boy can do.

Memphis stood behind his Tower shield looking at the awful monster astride the giant Midgarsormr. He shuddered for a moment. Then he closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath. Shard, Jaiek, and Velkamos were counting on him to help with the frontal assault. He wrapped his hand around the hilt of his sword and pulled it swiftly from its sheathe. Keeping the tower shield in front of him, he began to charge the Midgarsormr. At the last moment, he sprung from behind the shield and took his sword into both hands, swinging it wildly at the Midgarsormr.

Attack the Midgarsormr

Also question guys - Do you think this would work better as a meetup over Mumble or Skype similar to how Flint did his Pathfinder games? Would you be able to attend if we did maybe one a month? I figure a module can be completed in one 3 hour session. I'm not saying this is a definite thing- I designed it to be an over the forum thing- but it might be worth discussing.

(I realize I never answered the skype call question here ((also may or may not be using this as a way to bump this thread unashamedly :wacky:)) but I wouldn't be able to do it there, I have limited internet and would hate to rely on skype calls to play this, as I couldn't.

Really? Shard thought, as his valiant charge ended with him being propelled backwards to land flat on his back some distance behind the others. An obvious veteran hunter, two guys with huge swords, and a sharpshooter, and you decide I am the biggest threat? Even the cover fire from the ledge had failed to draw its attention away from him, although he appreciated the effort.

The monsters were slow, but they hit like trucks, he was tasting blood and might have cracked ribs. Sitting up, he downed his one potion, not confident enough of his healing magic to try it. He couldn't take another hit like that.

Proving his relevance was not going very well.

Action: Drank Potion.

Memphis saw Velkamos and Shard take what appeared to be some pretty nasty hits. Velkamos was down and out of his view. He did catch a glimpse of Shard reaching for a potion. His heart was racing. Things were moving so fast. He couldn't decide if he should continue the assault on the Midgardsormr or check on Velkamos. He decided the best thing he could do right now would be to try to eliminate the beast and then, hopefully, have time to help Velkamos.

Of course the hatchlings would still go for the chocobos, Cindy thought. She'd have to hope the injured one could hold up while she and Reno finished off the remaining serpent, otherwise it would likely just injure another. She did her best to draw its attention away from the chocobos as she fired another ice spell.

It was the sharp yet warming heat on his eyelids which finally roused him to full consciousness. Yakumo awoke with a start, immediately regretting the reflex as he clutched the side of his head in order to stop the world from violently spinning. He gasped as residual aches and pains began to make themselves known, his lips parched and torn. Reaching out, he grabbed a glass of water from a nightstand and finally took in his unfamiliar surroundings.

His senses were all bombarded at once - the smell of fresh straw, the old creaking beams of the buildings, and the sun blazing a spotlight through the open window as a light breeze tingled the hair on his arms. The chocobo farm, he mused. How in the world did I get here?

Casting his mind back, he replayed the previous battle with his allies. Perhaps the flier had poisoned him on contact? As he slowly slid himself off the bed and stretched his aching muscles, he glanced around, but his comrades did not appear to be nearby.

Now how in the world am I going to contact Cid?

Nukan reloaded his rifle as the battle raged on below him. The Chocobo Eater clearly had much more fight left in him, but at least had been poisoned. He couldn't get a clear view of the bogside from where he stood. The giant snake was covered in cuts. If the two monsters both targeted either Velkamos or Shard they might not survive. Nukan could only use his cure magic to ensure the survival of one of them, but if he took the shot and if they were able to eliminate the Midgardsormr before he could retaliate anyw furher, they'd all be safer. Nukan swallowed back his fears and made his choice.

Velkamos got up from the ground, slightly dazed from the strike of the giant snake. The bastard got me, he mused, taking a quick check of himself before moving to face the beasts again. I can still fight like this. Been in worse situations by myself. He realized he was putting some faith in his comrades here, but felt like he could trust them enough to do so.
He gripped his scythe harder, spat out a bit of blood in his mouth, and growled at the giant snake. Nukan and Memphis had already started attacking it again. The Chocobo Eater monster was poisoned too, which should help speed up the fight. The other comrade, Shard, had been hit by that Chocobo Eater, but was drinking a potion to heal himself, so Velkamos took this as a cue for him to lunge forward with his powerful legs and stab his scythe into the skin of that giant snake.
