FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE Demo Out Now!

I just finished a replay of dirge yesterday. So it really lands home how much more natural the writing in the remake feels. Barret and cloud have great banter with each other. The dynamic between Cloud, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie is already super clear in the first five minutes, and all of them are already more endearing over the course of 40 minutes than a character like Shalua was over an entire game. I'm so happy!

Yoooo!! Wait, is this demo longer than the e3 demo? Seeing the excitement everyone has in this thread makes this feel like Christmas morning. Everyone’s having so much fun.

I’m still in Boston after the end of PAX, but when I go home after the plane ride I’ll download it immediately. I still want to avoid spoilers, but if I’m playing the game it’s not a spoiler...Maybe I would feel differently if I haven’t already played the shorter demo. I probably would be avoiding this demo otherwise...

It is longer. This starts at the very beginning, rather than right before the scorpion boss

On my third straight hour playing it, REALLY testing it out, no garbage bin unturned.

Bruh. Shinra needs to start keeping their stuff in those cardboard boxes. They're indestructible...

I'm SO glad that I played it, because getting acclimated to the battle system feels like it's gonna help me really enjoy the game a lot more when it comes out. I'm super pleased at the way it all worked, and once you've got the hang of it, it's surprising how different it is from FFXV. I didn't feel similarities at all. The cadence of fighting, healing between battles, switching characters to charge ATB, and getting a feel for the differences between Barret and Cloud was really cool. I'm definitely gonna give it a couple more shots tonight after work.

Also, there's a Sephiroth tease if you chose the 20 min bomb option, but you do miss Barret's sassy mocking dialogue, so it's worth doing more than once.

Additionally I like how...
The added the little hints that AVALANCHE is a single cell that's part of a larger group, but also how Shinra is using them to spin up their own crisis. It adds a whole depth to Jessie's line from the OG about not expecting the bomb to do that much damage. I very much like these sorts of little contextual shifts that let you see the game in a different light, and change some of the things to make it feel new and unexpected.

This is the sort of thing that I expect will pay off in full propaganda mode when Tifa's captured before the Scarlet Sister Ray fight. To work well, they have to make those moments of deception memorable so that players will remember them going into another game, and I think that these are gonna nail that.

Combat Tip for Cloud: Run in using your normal Operator Mode, get up next to an enemy, swap to Punisher Mode & guard. It'll provoke a melee attack that you'll instantly counter. For the Shock Troopers, it'll instantly knock them down. It's one of the last things that I figured out, and it's something I definitely wanna go back in and try more of. This is also why Punisher Mode is SUPER slow to move, and dodging will take you out of it. It's almost designed to be a counter state, but it'll also let you get aggressive if they don't attack you right away.

I definitely need ta spend some more time with Barret and get his combat figured out more. I like his charge attack, but I didn't spend QUITE enough time with him in my first run through. This is the part that I appreciate the most about the demo, is getting a feel for the combat, so that it'll feel familiar by the time I'm playing the full game, and it'll be easier to get a feel for the other characters quickly.

Both timer options seem too long to me. It never took me more than 10 to escape.

I really like the moment when Barret is freaking out in the elevator as they're escaping, only to see how calm Cloud is, and looking at his own shaking hand. That was an amazingly humanizing moment for him. A+ Square!

I agree with this and it was one of the first thoughts I had about the game after beating the demo. I probably would've been a bit concerned/irritated after my first run-through with Guard Scorpion and finally understanding the flow of battles after that battle lol.

I may play through it again today, only with the timer set to 20 mins. And with trying out X-Soldier’s battle tactics. I used Punisher mode quite a lot, because Cloud‘s so much stronger with that, but it also nearly killed me a few times.

Yeah, I was taking a lot more damage than I thought I would. I definitely need to get back in and polish up a little bit, but also I wanna get a better feel for the pacing of the combat. It's very different from the rush-down feel of FFXV, and Cloud's comments about learning the attack patterns of the Guard Scorpion made me want to reassess how I'd been doing some of the earlier battles.

While you want to dive in and build up your ATB charges, there's a significant amount of nuance to the combat outside of those actions that I really want to spend more time with. My initial instincts to how to fight definitely felt like I needed more time to get the hang of things, and that I'll enjoy it a LOT more once I get a better feel for how all of the interactions play out.

1000x THIS. Getting a chance to get a feel for the combat on my own time has me looking forward to the game WAY more than I would have thought, and it also is taking away some frustrations that I might've been struggling with while being immersed in the story experience of the initial playthrough. This is why I'm recommending the demo to people who've been holding off on any new information / leaks / etc.

I will post all the little bits that I loved about this demo later, but I just wanted to love this post so much. So many people immediately jumped on Barret and the 'one dimensional / Mr T / Choir Preacher' voice acting direction that has been thrown at John Eric Bentley from what people saw within the previous trailers, but this demo alone showed just how much range there was in just the beginning segment for him.

He went from tough silent bouncer to fiery to boisterous to wit quipping to passionate to concerned ... and that final elevator scene was beautiful in its abrupt absence of sound from him. The fear as his hands shook and he realised just how deep he now was - probably also echoing his underlining deep rooted concerns about the blood on his hands and holding Marlene - juxtaposed with Cloud's eerie calmness. That was incredible.

So much to unpack here. I know the biggest thread will be on that final sequence from Shinra, but after seeing it, I like it even more and it makes so much sense.

Fortunately my girlfriend was home today so she downloaded and installed it for me for when I came home. That's love. It was the longest day at work though...!

Wasn't it terrific? It's going to take me several goes to get any good at it, I think I was just as bad as the data miners. I made a right dog's dinner of the Scorpion fight. It's a good job there were so many potions knocking about.

I'd watched the leaks but having it in your hands was very special.

Did anyone notice that the music had changed up slightly? The reactor music in particular? Not a complaint by any stretch, I think they've done a brilliant job with all of it...
