I'd say without the number sign, mostly on stylistic reasons. I like Kalm better than Calm because in English, Kalm looks slightly less...odd than Calm, I suppose. Maul Dancer sounds more sinister, so I like that one best. Nerospherot looks best to me because of the Kabbalah connection. I'd say leave percent out since at best it's confusing. Also I like Death Blow.

*whew!*

yeah literally it can be read as "So that's how you will deceive them" depending on context...apparently but that was the mistake PSX made :lol:

A bit late with release, few problems like waiting to geta concensus on the stuff above, but also had a hard drive head crash and so was a little preoccupied reinstalling windows. I keep backups of all my data on DVD and 2 other harddrive so no loss of irreplaceable data

Release day should be tomorrow for part 1.

Files:

Flevel.lgp: Main Dialogue and place names, and everything that is changed in Kernel.bin has to be changed here.

FF7.exe: Menu text, Chocobo names, main character names

Scene.bin: Enemy names and moves

kernel.bin: Materia names, weaponsm armours etc

Kernel2.bin: Battle Text

World_us.lgp: File "mes" inside this houses the world map place names and dialogue

There will still be some issues and these will be ironed out over time. Certainly world map dialogue will not display correctly for the time being and until I go through part 2, some of the other text will wrap wrong inside text boxes but this is a necessary evil for now. This is only half the work.

I have noticed that Advent Children has done exactly what I thought it would, and made the original mistakes canon(?). At 1 point the Great Crater (lit. Great Cavity) is referred to as Northern Cave.

The Japanese can mean Cave, Hollow, Cavity as far as I am aware and sadly the original translation team chose cave as they obv hadnt the foggiest it was referring to a Mother fuckin great hole.

Northern Cave > 大空洞 > Great Crater

大 Great
空洞 Cave / Hollow / Cavity

What annoys me is "Northern" doesnt even appear at all in the place names, it is ALWAYS "Great"

These are the variations the translators used:

North Cave
Northern Cave
Great Cave
Northern Cave Crater [no I ain't kidding, although that is because the Japanese game used Great Cavity, Crater which doesn't work for english]

And yeah it is possible the Japanese intended cave but given context I think v unlikely...and it simply doesnt work in english as that is not a cave... Great Northern Crater can work in full.

I have just updated all the place names and it took AGES.

Basically all you need is the PC version, and then aali's driver. Once that is all installed, my installer does the rest, although obviously you will need the PC disc in the drive or images mounted.

It isn't too daunting, and my installer does all the hard work of installing the actual mod. It is just aali's driver does all the work of getting the game fully functional with windows :)

We are currently working on updating the PC FMV (I will be adding translation to those that need it). I found a better way using super resolution etc. Documented here with latest posts:

Turns out super resolution doesn't do a much better job to vegas really. Any case PSXMC gets the colour wrong so I am awaiting a new tool being made at qhimms to get the FMV's and then we will resize to 1280 X 896 (4X) with a few modifications, output to H.264. I have worked out that the overall space required will double the original PC FMV but this is much better when we have a nicer resolution video.

The PC FMV seem to have used the PSX video's and then used another codec on them which sucks, not to mention PSX/PC are 320*224

They corrected this in FF8 PC with Video's that are 640*480 (which were encoded directly from the master) with a better codec. The result is that FF8 PC has MUCH better video quality. See here>

Well that doesn't do it justice really. Anyway I may add a screen shot of a frame one time.

This is a test we did a while back with Defade I think, but regardless we are starting from scratch to make sure. Still...here is what we got back then:

Translation of FF7

"Move it newcomer."
Keep up.” [exerts his authority, it is his character]

Sector 1 - In front of the station

Biggs
“As I expected from a ‘Soldier’!
But it's unbelievable that one has joined an anti Shin-Ra group like Avalanche!”

Jessie
“Is that true? But Soldier...aren't they our enemy?”

Jessie
“Why is he helping us out?”

Biggs
“Now now. You’re jumping to conclusions, Jessie. He WAS in Soldier.”
{NEW PAGE}
“He quit Shin-Ra and is with us now.”

Biggs
“I didn't catch your name…”

{CLOUD}
“…{CLOUD}.”

Biggs
“{CLOUD}‚eh? I'm…”

{CLOUD}
“I'm not interested in names.
After this job's done, I’m leaving.”

“What the hell are you all doing!?"
I told you not to move in a group!"

“Our target's the 1st Makō Reactor.
We'll meet on the bridge in front of it.”

“Ex-Soldier‚huh?
I don't trust ya!”

{BARRET}
“Press the Directional buttons while
pressing {PURPLE}[CANCEL]{WHITE}
to run.”

Reactor #1 - In front [changed from Infront] of the reactor

Wedge
“I'll secure our escape passage.
You concentrate on the mission.”

Wedge
“Geez‚we're really gonna blow <-- "But I wonder what the explosion from"
this huge furnace up? <-- "this huge Mako-Reactor will be like... " = not a question, he believes allright
This'll be somethin' to see!”

Needs checking by defade/herman/other

Reactor #1 - Entrance:

{BARRET}
“....oi. This isn’t your first time in a reactor is it?”

{CLOUD}
“No. After all, Soldier works for the Shin-Ra company.

{BARRET}
“The planet's full of Makō energy.
The people use it everyday, but nobody knows what it truly is.
Do you? ”

{BARRET}
“Well I’ll tell you. It’s the life blood of this planet and Shin-Ra keeps suckin' it out
with these weird machines.”

{CLOUD}
“Save me the gloating. Let's just hurry this up...”

{BARRET}
“Grr! Alright, you come with me from now on.”

Jessie
“Code deciphered.”

Biggs
“Code deciphered.”

Jessie
“Biggs and I got the code for this door.”

Biggs
“Think how many of our people risked their
lives‚just for this code…”

Biggs
“Let's go!”

Jessie
“Alright‚be careful.”

Biggs
“Jessie still isn't back yet!”

Reactor #1 - Elevator

Switch On.

Jessie
“Push that button over there!”

{BARRET}
“Because of these Makō reactors, the life of our planet is being drained out little by little...and one day, it’ll be gone.”

{CLOUD}
“Sorry, but I'm not interested.”

{BARRET}
“The planet is dyin'‚{CLOUD}!”

takes even longer....I have started decoding the files again :) won't take TOO long , just tedious.

Also, we are having a little debate at the moment about Reno, in particular this>

レノ　“逃げるが勝ちだぞっと”

Reno "To lose is to win, to" but と implies he is quoting himself (and he does it all the time), and so we are thinking:

Reno "Discretion is the better part of valour, I say" or

"As I say, 'Discretion is the better part of valour' "

or is he just quoting is like 'Discretion is the better part of valour' on its own.

What do you think? And do any sources mention his way of speaking Zo To

Reno possesses a distinct speech pattern in Japanese, speaking in a drawling, slangy manner and, most notoriously, ending most of his sentences with zo to (ぞ, と), yo to (よ, と), or simply to (と). This can imply an Osakan accent. Tifa Lockhart receives a phone call near the beginning of Advent Children, and, although the caller's voice is not heard, the audience understands that it is from Reno, a
is that true on the Osakan? Luksy has it down as quoting himself like , "I say" or something
or is it just a sound...need to approximate it somehow

<

How do you think would be best to approximate this?

Sorry for not replying sooner, Daniel. Thought I already had for some reason. Probably after I'd gotten home from work one morning, was really sleepy and not exactly sure what was reality. :monster:

Anyway, Reno is not quoting himself or anyone else there. That's just another example of his iconic speech pattern.

I've been told by 2 others working with me that と at the end of a sentence indicates a quote, wheres yo and zo are just emphasis? Like "these guys are TOUGH!"

It normally would, but Reno uses it to the point where it no longer seems to have that meaning. It's just something he says to make his dialogue unique.

So how would you render that in English?

Yo and Zo are just emphasis, but about To?

It's all part of the same mannerism. Just translate the line itself and go from there, though always keep in mind with translating Reno's lines that he should sound very casual, possibly crude.

Basically, look at how he wears his Turk uniform. Transpose that to his dialogue whenever possible (if you'd have to force it, though, don't). You can probably achieve this easiest with contractions, omissions of words, etc.

And, of course, there's the (in)famous practice of some Advent Children fansubbers adding "yo" to the end of some of his lines. Personally, I've always had a soft spot for it and encourage it to be done on at least some occasions.

As for that line you're working with here, I don't really like the idea of going with "Discretion is the better part of valor." That implies acknowledging defeat, which seems to be the opposite of what Reno was doing.

The official English version's translation of that line was "We may be retreating, but we're still victorious" -- and I think that was pretty close to the idea. Go with something like that.

Maybe "We're even victorious in defeat" with "yo" optional. :awesome:

I like the "yo." I don't care what anybody says.

DLPB

He was using an idiom though....it wasn't just a speech it was an actual idiom. (to lose is to win)

逃げるが勝ちだぞっ

http://www.docoja.com:8080/kanji/mainkanj?dbname=kanjig&keyword=%E9%80%83%E3%81%92%E9%81%85%E3%82%8C%E3%82%8B

But yeah if that was what he was getting at then it is possible to rearrange it. Actually maybe the translation of that idiom sucks to be honest. It does simply mean that by running away they are winning.

So you would agree that zo and yo are emphasis, or meant to be and that to is just something they used with his speech to make it unique? And I could use yo there instead perhaps? It is a bit of a miss mash, but it works.

And don't worry about the dialogue, where possible the feel will remain as the original which did an OK job, keeping with the character. I have looked up on all of them and what they are supposed to be like, I won't butcher it :P

You're absolutely right that "Discretion is the better part of valor" is typically how the idiom is translated, and, really, it's a good translation. It's a swapping of a Japanese idiom for an English idiom of similar meaning.

Given the context of the scene, though (a battle, where winning and losing weren't metaphors, but were literal concepts in play), I took it to be something of a pun -- such that Reno was really trying to say something like "We may be running away, but we're still victorious."

Of course, I could just be looking too far into it and it may simply be that the line was written without any consideration for that. :monster:

Let's see what insight hito has on the matter.

As for "zotto"/"zo, to" and "yotto"/"yo, to," with most people, ending a sentence with a grammatically unnecessary "zo" or "yo" alone would serve as some kind of emphasis, so I can really only conclude that the extra "to" is there for a different kind of emphasis -- his informal nature.

But, as you really can't look at either syllable in isolation -- especially if there's a sokuon (a small "tsu" character) in front of "to," as with this line we're looking at here -- then the whole thing, thus, would be the idiosyncrasy.

In conclusion, it's just Reno's thing. :monster: Depending on the context and your gut, look at it as either a line that demands some kind of emphasis or as Reno just being Reno. The one constant, though, should be that he's very informal and casual. He's the kind of character who you'd probably want to give lines beginning with a verb instead of a pronoun, who would use contractions wherever possible, would drop the ending "g" on "-ing" words, would use "gonna" and "wanna," etc.

DLPB

Yes definately....he is a very casual character and this will have to be reflected. Reno will pose one of the most difficult tasks when it comes to getting the feel right for sure!

I will of course allow you and others to run through our final drafts and so forth, and make corrections. The final releases are not set in stone, and can be altered until I stop updating...which should be a long way away.

DLPB

Banned Flunky

Luksy:
whether there's a sokuon or not doesn't matter, in informal speech you can end a sentence with tto in the same way as to, it just makes it more "pondering"

but yeah it's a "thing"....

the "...tto" pattern is used for comic effect, as the gamer is used to Reno ending every sentence with to, so delaying it makes it more funny
Although he agrees it is probably not a quote. What say you, Hito? How would you go about this?
