When the Creative Thinktank outnumbers the Story Writers in a project, this sort of thing is bound to happen. This is precisely why Editors are needed in every nook and cranny to keep things on track.
But what really grinds me is that so much of it was rejected.
Who was the 'Diva' causing all these issues? Nomura? He wasn't the only person running things at the time.
They were rushing the vision before they had a full idea. Sheesh.
After 60+ hours I think I'm ready to call it quits with the game. I definitely won't forget the past decade, and I'm interested in seeing what they add to the game going forward. However, other than maybe the DLC, I'm not sure I'll play it again for some time. I would under normal circumstances for sure, but I don't think I want to cross it up with the FF series playthrough I intend to do soon. Still not sure what I'll do about that. In an ideal world I would hold out until I reach this point in the series later in the year.
If you honestly told me to compare this game to the FFXIII Trilogy, I'd state that XIII-2 and Lightning Returns were more fun overall.
Where this game suffers the most is definitely post-game, where everything is a challenge to slog through. The only rewards are better weapons for, you guessed it, more fighting.
As someone who plays Action and Fighting games, while it was a brief romp to explore, I think if they actually went with more Pitioss Dungeons instead of the same old monster hunting, that would have been more refreshing.
This game also has a poor grasp of what I consider 'fun'. Fishing is one thing, Pinball is another, but really now? Didn't Triple Triad even CROSS their minds? Kingsknight as a mini-game? Something?
I think it's long overdue for me to show them how a REAL RPG is made.

I really, really enjoyed XIII-2. People can say what they will about the XIII trilogy, but at least it actually had some coherent lore if you looked hard enough for it.
I think that Square tried to go too wide with some things as new-concepts and overtaxed themselves. With how long the game was being tossed around in the conceptual phase, it really didn't matter what they did to make it work, it was way too large to actually meet everyone's expectations.
My biggest gripe was as soon as I loaded up the game for the first time and looked at the map, my first thought was "Wow! The first area is so large!"
...and then I realized that was the entire game basically. While it's packed full of stuff and doesn't feel empty, it's all very samey. I want more dungeons to explore. I want more late game content where I can be level 99 and still have to struggle in the great outdoors. Just mess me up, square.
Armed with a PS4, courtesy of Christmas, I'm ready to embark on FFXV officially.
Besides playing the Platinum Demo a while back and watching Kingsglaive the other night (as I at least heard that it was worth watching before playing the game), I've done well to avoid discovering much about the game.
Since I got the Ultimate Collector's Edition, I also have the Brotherhood series. Especially now that most of you in this thread have played (and finished, maybe?) the game, and considering that I really know little about FFXV so far, should I watch Brotherhood entirely before playing, or would it be more appreciated in pieces with no importance when I watch each episode, or should I avoid looking at it until I'm a good bit into the game (whether for cases of teeny-tiny giveaways or for sheer appreciation), etc.? Any recommendations? Cheers
I'm almost 100% settled on Apocalypsis Noctis being my favourite track. Someone got me a really expensive pair of Senheisers for christmas so I put the XV soundtrack on my phone (Apple Lossless format) and I've been full blasting some tracks.
I literally rolled my eyes involuntarily when Apocalypsis Noctis hit the 24 second mark. The funny thing is, it's mainly just that part I like. But I like it so much that it eclipses the other songs. I don't know how much of it comes from trailer hype/ the moment it covers in-game, but I love it.
Going to have to listen to more of them lots to get a good judgement.
I wouldn't go that far; I think the game has a load of good things going for it. It's somehow more than the sum of its parts. It does have a lot of problems though, there's no denying that.
As for the soundtrack, I'm not sure how I feel about it as a whole yet. The "epic" Shimomura tracks (i.e. anything with a latin title) have all skyrocketed to the very top of my favourite FF tracks of all time list. They beat out some FF greats by a wide margin. The rest of the soundtrack is pretty hit or miss, from a personal taste standpoint. From an objective standpoint most of it is technically good and/ or fitting, but I haven't listened to everything properly yet.
I would've liked Shimomura to compose the town themes and such as well instead of them going for a generic stock music feel. =/
There's other ways in which I thought the music could've been better implemented. From the odd sound mix to there only being two field music tracks that only play randomly and get easily interrupted when pausing the game (with the menu music being an annoyance in its own right if you keep hearing only the beginning over and over everytime you look at the map for a few seconds) or getting into a fight, to all the outposts having the same damn harmonica music, every dungeon having the same music, the Regalia theme is barely noticeable even when you turn down the sound effects volume and finally
Somnus should've been one of those FF situations where the music keeps playing even over battles like for example A Fleeting Dream in FFX when you walk towards Zanarkand.
I mean, I love the hell out of this games soundtrack, and I really don't know if I can point to any one piece and say "Yup, thats my favorite," but there are a few that stand out right now aside from the ones you guys have already mentioned.
Wanted to post this yesterday but I cba from work. Some PS4 themes from the upcoming dlcs supposedly leaked on Reddit. They give some idea on what to expect of each characters story. Spoilers obvs.
I'm mildly concerned that's supposed to be Gilgamesh that Gladio is standing off against. Gil is supposed to show up in the Gladio story so if that reskinned Iron Giant is him, I'll be sad.
Well makes sense we find out what did him in.
Guess this is after he fell off the train. This is probably the one I look forward to most.
Annoying thing, though, is that every time they find something interesting, it's night and they don't stick around to wait for the sun, as in that Angelgard video with the weird sword monument. Wasn't really an issue with the "Attempting to reach Insomnia" video, but in the one before it, they found some buildings and didn't even try to explore those.
Thankfully, others have done both of these things properly:
Turns out the sword monument is
where Noctis wakes up at the start of Chapter 14 -- but you wouldn't know it from that other video because they didn't bother to look. =P
It's bizarre that the developers didn't let you walk from the Stone Prison down to the shoreline no bigger than this place is. Would it have really hurt anything?
I counted nine swords, by the way -- don't know if that's relevant.
The above videos tell me more than anything else has that the development team got nowhere near where they intended with the game. There's so much stuff you're not supposed to access now that was fully rendered, and even given collision detection in many cases -- it's wild.
Seriously, that collision I spoke of is probably the least weird thing that goes down in this video. It gets way crazier after that. Noctis even ends up captured by the Empire. For real. Just watch it.
And finally, we learn that Gladiolus and Ignis know the Shadow Clone Technique from "Naruto"; that Cidney actually kind of sucks at her job despite being willing to deliver you car fucking anywhere; that Ignis could pull off a buzzcut; the infrastructure in Cleigne could really use some help; and the Regalia could fly all along: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq3Rv42a2js
Looks like it was, yeah. I've just been posting the exploration and glitch videos in this thread, as it seems like the better place. To find that post of yours, I just searched for it without thinking about which thread it was in. =P

I'm not sure how many people have finished the game...it's getting into mild spoiler territory in here.
