I only saw it several years after LotR came out, so I was a bit underwhelmed, but for its day it was great, yeah.

Before LotR, Willow was pretty much as good as Fantasy got. I still think it's great.

This, imho. It avoided the corny trap a lot of other fantasy-like movies had (like... Conan? I dunno). I guess the Neverending Story was also valid, if a bit more fantasy-ish and... fucking creepy princess girls. But eh. FALCOOOOORRR!R!!!
