Angeal I would probably have liked more if he stuck around longer before going rogue. We didn't get a chance to know him before he went bad, so sympathizing with Zack was hard.

Angeal annoys me almost as much as Genesis because he is also very disjointed as a character, but unlike Genesis, I think he could be salvageable. Not sure how much they could salvage through tapes and flashbacks alone, though. Lazard, and perhaps Zack, are the only characters I liked in CC.

I don't think square is going to renew their license with Gackt just to subject us to more Loveless. Angeal making an appearance I could see though.

I'm sure if SE really wanted to, they could make some minor tweaks to Genesis in order to get out of dealing with Gackt

Genesis definitely has his fans. I'm not one of them but honestly, if they want to make a little nod in his direction - let's say a battered and years-old SOLDIER recruiting poster stuck on an electricity pole down in the slums - I would have no objections.

Well outside of flashbacks and materials like files/archives, the Compilation itself already justifies Genesis not appearing during the Remake, so I wouldn’t be too worried about direct appearances.

I'm wondering if I may be a hypocrite. I tend to complain about how Genesis and Angeal are such "disjointed" characters, yet I love Reno despite the fact that his characterization is not cohesive. Perhaps it is simply because I find him interesting in the first place and allow fanfiction to fill the gap. Then again, I guess it's more that Reno was not bridged or developed, whereas Genesis and Angeal just spewed nonsense the entire time. Maybe I'm not a hypocrite.

Reno is generally likable in all of his incarnations despite them not necessarily working together. Angeal and Genesis are both preachy and annoying, and don't do much to endear me to them. People harp on about genesis' poetry, but angeal's "SOLDIER HONOR, DREEEEEEEAMMMMMS" stuff was just as grating for me. They're both so one note.

Cloud prepares himself for the final blow, finally settling the score with the man who took everything from him. His breath is calm, his eyes focused. This is the moment that past five years has been building to. Cloud takes a step forward, ready to end everything.

Just then, an arm appears from the void and wrests the buster sword from Cloud's hands. "LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!" the bearded man bellows. "All of this wear, tear, and rust! Where's your pride in your weapon? Your HONOR!? This sword carries my Hope's and DREAMS, and you dare wear the mark of a SOLDIER? For shame." The man begins shaking his head.

Cloud is taken aback, not sure who this weirdo is or what he wants. "Hey, we were kinda in the middle of something here." Cloud says. "Could you give that ba-" just then, another figure emerges, descending from the sky. "Master, you're ruining my BFFs big moment! This is MY LIVING LEGACY here, I want to see this." The spikey black haired man grabs the sword, and he and the bearded man start wrestling over it. "I HAVE TO TEACH HIM HONOR" The bearded man yells. "He has honor. MY HONOR. What part of 'living legacy' aren't you getting here, man?"

The two continue to squabble as Cloud looks on. "Zack...? Is that yo-" JUST THEN a third figure emerged, in a big explosion of black feathers and J-Rock. "GUYS, I FIGURED OUT WHAT THE GIFT OF THE GODDESS IS!!!" "Shut up, nobody cares Genesis! Me and Sephiroth used to make fun of your dumb poetry behind your back!" "Give Cloud the sword back you fuck!" "Shut up puppy boy!"

Cloud walks over to sephiroth, who has been just sort of standing there for a while. "Hey man, you want to go get drinks or something? The mood has kinda been killed here." "Yeah, sure, why not." And so the pair walk off, shoulder in shoulder, as the mystery trio continue to argue in the darkness.

To justify retconning characters out of existence, I think you need a better reason than 'I don't personally like them'.

I don't find Genesis and Angeal two dimensional. And the player Turks in BC don't even have names, but you love em.

Mako, I never played KH, I don't know who Xemnas is.

I think the perfect solution to Angeal and Genesis is to make it so that both experiments died young as children, in contrast with Sephiroth which was successful in being brought to adulthood.

For me, it's that the actions and lines of Genesis and Angeal don't make any sense, and not in the flawed/human kind of way. It's almost like their lines are disembodied from the rest of the script, and the things they say are cryptic to the point of being unintelligible. In addition to being cryptic, they are also campy and preachy. Like them or not, the writing in that game was god awful and it almost seemed like it actively avoided establishing any context for its characters.

The reason I personally prefer BC (and its characters) over CC is because:

CC is a pseudo-philosophical hot mess pretending to be something more profound.​

BC doesn't really try to be more than what it is. It's entertaining.​

They don't have to be front and center of everything, but there could be little hints dropped here and there about them. The Remake has potential in adding more to characters that can benefit from it. Personally, I wouldn't mind Genesis looking different to drop all the Gackt references if possible.

If they could successfully salvage/bolster them, I would be really happy with that. It may make CC more enjoyable for me. I really wanted to like it, and I don't like mentally discarding canon characters.

I really, really, really, wish that would not be the first takeaway from the Compilation's plot elements being confirmed for the FFVII Remake by people

Quite simply, Genesis and Angeal are dead. They have no functional presence or purpose in VII's plot. These characters are solely connected to Zack's development and story in Crisis Core. Their influence is present, memorable and important to the universe of FFVII but they are not present or relevant to VII's own plot at all. Zack had a unique story and these characters existed in that story. I don't think anything personal or based on their character will present themselves in the Remake.

It's like expecting Fuhito or Lazard to somehow get more characterization or presence in the Remake. That's not happening. However, their influence will be seen. SOLDIER is now be under the control of Heidegger's Public Security division. We see Sector 6 is still destroyed and under repair, and the previous AVALANCHE's role in raising hell and trying to kill Shinra is acknowledged.

Things from the Compilation will solely be framed and acknowledged in reference to VII. But not in reverse.

That's just fanon though isn't it. That doesn't happen in the actual game. Zirconiade is fought in some weird ass final dungeon construct above Midgar. BC never references any damage that was done to the city as a result of Zirconiade iirc.
