I tuned this game out of my mind for the last several months, but I'm right back on the hype train. Never had a chance to enjoy a game alongside the good crew here on LifeStream. This would be a perfect opportunity to do so once Remake VII is out.

As for hopes, I'm just interested to relive some of my fav moments. Maybe see things that happened offscreen in the OG (the massacre in the Shinra building, etc) and seeing how the world looks. I'm just super excited right now. Can't wait for E3.

When it comes to expanding the Midgar section of the story, I'm wondering if we're going to have an expansion around the "Golden Shiny Wire of Hope" section when it comes to how Cloud & Co have to get to Shinra HQ. That's a portion of the game, where you're definitively locked in to the Cloud, Tifa, Barret team and you've just lost all the other members of AVALANCHE. If you're crawling up through the wreckage of the plate, it might be interesting to have to find a way to get through more of the city to reach the Shinra HQ Building, especially because it'd be interesting to get a sense of how the people on the plate are reacting to the news about the whole sector being dropped.

Also, just from a mechanical standpoint, I think that's one of the areas of the game where I'm not sure that the same sort of puzzle mechanics would work as well, and that if there's any opportunity to get a better sense of what Midgar is during a still urgent and relatively brief period of time, when you have a fairly small number of elements to worry about with story (locked party of only 3 characters), this is a good section to expand a little bit.

Some thoughts on how they can expand everything:

Make the reactors much larger and more complicated entities to get through. The trailer's 20 minute timer seems to imply they may have done so, but still worth being stated.

During the exfil from Sector 1 Reactor to the Sector 7 slums, have Cloud actually try to make it to the station, but miss the train for whatever reason(s) and then, as he tries to figure another way down, enters that confrontation with the Shinra soldiers.

Expand the slums and the time it takes to make it from the station to the bar.

Instead of having the Sector 5 mission be the next day, have them lay low for a few days and/or do interesting side missions or have new (lower profile) storyline missions in between. Have it be like a week or two in plot time.

Maybe make a playable section of what Tifa and Barret did while Cloud was in Sector 5 and 6.

Expand Sector 5 slums. Have sideplots and other things to do there. Same with Sector 6 and the Wall Market story. Make the sewers more extensive.

Expand on the pillar attack. Maybe include the attempted evacuation, maybe include the first part of the attack that we don't get to see.

Thats all I have for now, but I feel like those alone would add a few hours more of gameplay right there.

This. I expect this is going to be how we'll be given time to enjoy a much larger midgar, and give us a chance for each of the avalanche members to get to know Cloud, and in turn, allow us to get to know them. This'll be a razor's edge, since too little and it'll disapoint people, but too much and it'll feel bloated.

I say it should probably be about maybe two hours of storyline content, and a maximum of 8-10 hours of side content assuming it's midgar only, or half that time if we end at a later period.

Take advantage of the modern graphics for an even better experience.

I want to see the strange adventures of "Spikey, Skirt & Sunflower"!

I mean the whole story segment starting from their first encounter in the S&M basement, following the trail through the sewers, and finally the horror-trip on the train graveyard. This could be one of the most entertaining parts of EP 1! And can possibly be seen as foundation for their developing friendship. Hopefully SE are doing this justice, especially I hope they don't change the setting of their first meeting.

This is exactly what I've been talking about. It should be fairly easy to incorporate extra elements to the foundation of the game. There are a lot of things going on throughout, mostly in the background. I mean, hell, you could do a fetch quest to get Jesse bomb parts. Just little things like that, to add to you getting to know everyone.

Totally doable, and laying low for a few days between reactor bombings makes perfect sense and is a great opportunity for that kinda stuff. But you'd still have to be careful to not go so far as to just create pace-killing padding.

Oh for sure. In fact, because of pacing, I feel like its only really doable between reactor missions. Even the other parts I mention afterward may not actually make sense if it bogs the story down too much. Just depends on how its implemented.

That kinda stuff would be exactly what I am scared of. Pointless filler that just serves to bloat the game and adds nothing substantial to the story.

Please no fetch quests, please no fetch quests...

Something that does make for good filler, IMO is like item creation, riddles, puzzles, mini games, or ATEs in FFIX. In fact, I would love an ATE or private action system that gives you various choices and payoffs...kind of like the dating mechanic in the OG but in a larger scale. I also enjoy item procurement that makes you explore the environment in a not so grindy way.

UNLESS it's like ME3 where the side missions make the final assault on Shinra HQ easier, or the like. If that sweeper fight is in a sweeper manufacturer, as I've theorized, it could remove the sweeper enemies from the second bombing mission (by moving them to their own sidequest) and give the player a feeling of their choices mattering.
