How can you enjoy this game?

I dunno, but it sure as hell is unplayable.

Pressing space (select on the playstation) should highlight the navigation system and allow you to find the exits.

You need time to adjust. Even in 1999 I was taken back by how crude it seemed, but I endured and by the time I reached the third boss I was addicted. I don't think anyone would argue that the first level (Mako reactor 1) is the pinnacle of artistry in the game. I'm of the opinion that the first two levels are designed as setup to subvert your expectations later on, which is why I only asked you about the atmosphere.

Games are software you have to learn and adapt to, later games like FF13 tried to make the transition easier. Try and engage with it, meaning get past the first level, before signing up on fan-forums and complaining about the sprites. I wouldn't watch the first five minutes of Star Wars, and then complain on the internet how dated the sfx are.

I've started a third attempt and i've managed to get out and do a bit well for myself, so never mind, i'll rescind my criticism.

Unless you've never played a video game before (which was more or less the case for me when I played FFVII for the first time), the gameplay is not hard to figure out and the enemies are really not that difficult to beat; even as a complete amateur I don't think I got more than a couple of game overs during my first run-through.

Why do I love it? The beautifully rendered, highly detailed backgrounds that bring the world to life and are works of art in their own right; the wacky yet totally compelling narrative; the complex, engaging characters; the wonderful juxtaposition of profound themes with quirky unexplained weirdnesses like floating Bugenhagen.... I just don't see what's not to love. I love this game because it's thought-provoking. It showed that a game could be flawed but still brilliant. It showed that a game could be a work of art. (I'd actually prefer to call it work of literature).

The question was "How long will it take before I admit or you guys figure out I'm User Name and get banned", I think :monster:

I figured it out - the question is in the title. "How can you enjoy this game?"

I have to admit though
I did a second attempt, i got as far as the first save point, but i forgot to save.
This made me laugh. Nice attempt of taking us for a stroll there :monster:

When I first played the game I could never get out of the first Mako Reactor, failed to climb a set of stairs every time. Then again I have the reasonable excuse of being 7 years old at the time.

i'm an hour into the game, and i'm getting some characterization from Cloud.

He does not care about anyone and anything on the planet. its as if he's become self aware and has realized he's trapped in a bad JRPG.

^ You're on to something, keep playing :monster:

Thank me if i find a shocking revelation.

I loaded up a game that was saved in the weapons shop. I asked the dog out of curiosity, after sitting through the dogs tutorial, cloud realized he had a hand above his head, which activated by pressing select!

You may have seen this before, but I think cloud may be sentient.

Anyone still here?

Well i'm now two hours into this slog. Cloud falls off a ledge caused by an exploding boss bot. He then lands in a flower patch inside a church tended by a woman named Alice. (her default name is Aeris, but I changed because how are supposed to pronounce that?)

Alice asks cloud to be her bodyguard, which is fitting because the turks bust in to capture her. After they fight the turks off, they go to Alice's house. Alice's asks cloud if tifa is his boyfriend. He says no, but Alice says he should not get angry about it.

Looks we found another revelation: Alice is a CloudxTifa fangirl. (yeah, Alice has sunk her own ship)

Who the fuck is Alic-- oh. Aeris.

(her default name is Aeris, but I changed because how are supposed to pronounce that?)

Like how you pronounce "Eris". (Eh-ris) (Or "Eh-riff" if you insist on emphasising the "th" part of Aerith's name but I think it feels more natural to pronounce Aerith as "Eh-ris".)

A bit offtopic, but years later I still don't understand why people still have a hard time pronouncing Aeris' name -- The "A" in Aeris is silent like the "A" in Aether. At least, that's my assumption.

I've picked up the game again. I leave alice's house to get back to 7th heaven only to encounter alice saying that i need to get through sector 6 to get back to 7th heaven. so I enter the next "room" (square never bothers to give them names unless theres a save point in there.), in which I encounter a boss which looks like a retarded version of alice's church. I dispatch the boss after a few minutes a continue looking and then i have a random encounter with 4 tyranid like beasts. I kill them in a couple of minutes. Still lost, I continue looking for an exit when suddenly ANOTHER BLOODY RANDOM ENCOUNTER. Frustrated, I leave Alice and cloud to die.

When I named this thread "How can you enjoy this game?", I meant it. how can you enjoy and celebrate a game with Frustrating gameplay, Unintuitive navigation, Annoying random encounters and SNES like music? Are you guys thick? or just taking bribes from square?

You're right. Thank God they stopped making games with learning curves, exploration and enemies who aren't all bosses.

Not going to lie I hated playing FFVII at first. I was being forced to play the game as a source of amusement for my older brother. Sort of a deal before he would allow me to go on and play something I actually liked (Tomb Raider back in the day).

I got stuck in the first reactor, panicked when I couldn't climb the ladder during the countdown, frustrated over the simultaneous button smash in the next reactor and yes, I could not find my way out of Sector 6 Slums. I did not actually start to like the game until I got out of Midgar and had enough materia to play around with. I don't think I even paid any attention to the plot until the second playthrough

I don't know, the game grew on me as I progressed. It was the first RPG I ever had a go at and it took a while for me to understand all the ins and outs of the gameplay. I think it was the battle system that finally hooked me in the end.

I recommend continuing just for the next section of the game but only because Square is paying me to ;) (seriously though, I always love to see what new players think about what happens in Wall Market).

This may help:

If you didn't know, you can run away from battles. You wont get stronger and the enemies in that particular area have a tendency to get your party in a pincer attack, which prevent you from getting away. Holding down R1 and L1 buttons for PlayStation, Page Up and Page Down is my default PC controls for escaping.

...The Hell House I presume?

That house isn't even a boss...you can always run dude and it's really not a hard monster to begin with

her default name is Aeris, but I changed because how are supposed to pronounce that?

....I dunno go with what your brain might think it sounds like, man come on I was 9 when I played this and even I knew how to pronounce it, it's hardly the most excruciatingly awful word to pronounce....can you also stop calling her Alice.

Annoying random encounters

.....you do know that they happen quite often in RPGs right?

so I enter the next "room" (square never bothers to give them names unless theres a save point in there.)

it's a sector, Jessie gives you info early in the game as to why they're called sectors and don't have proper names...did you not read that bit? A room also implies a closed space...it's an open area dude.

When I named this thread "How can you enjoy this game?", I meant it. how can you enjoy and celebrate a game with Frustrating gameplay, Unintuitive navigation, Annoying random encounters and SNES like music?

Then don't play it, go play something else if it bothers you so much and quit whinging for the sake of whinging about it.

Fact to answer your question about why it's named Final Fantasy even though it's the seventh installlment

The Final Fantasy games are named so because the original one was the last push Square were going for before they assumed they'd go bust, they were close to being bankrupt, so Sakaguchi named it suitably as they all assumed it would be their final game, the original turned out to be one of Square's most successful games they'd ever released at that point and of course the rest is history, irony no?

I'm torn guys I don't know whether to believe he/she genuinely is new to this and has major beef with the game or is just trolling for the lulz.
