I dunno, but it sure as hell is unplayable.
Pressing space (select on the playstation) should highlight the navigation system and allow you to find the exits.
You need time to adjust. Even in 1999 I was taken back by how crude it seemed, but I endured and by the time I reached the third boss I was addicted. I don't think anyone would argue that the first level (Mako reactor 1) is the pinnacle of artistry in the game. I'm of the opinion that the first two levels are designed as setup to subvert your expectations later on, which is why I only asked you about the atmosphere.
Games are software you have to learn and adapt to, later games like FF13 tried to make the transition easier. Try and engage with it, meaning get past the first level, before signing up on fan-forums and complaining about the sprites. I wouldn't watch the first five minutes of Star Wars, and then complain on the internet how dated the sfx are.
