You know...this is just me, but, I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin...and I've known about the concept of Beer and Alcohol since I was a kid.

Just the mere suggestions or implications of it shouldn't spike the ESRB ratings...these people are too uptight.

I know. The original FF7 had zero mentions of that, hilariously. Dirge of Cerberus gets one because Cid lights a single cigarette in one of the closing cutscenes. "Use of tobacco."

Really? In FF7 Cid uses his cigarette to light a stick of dynamite!

What kind of warnings did XII get? Cus the NPC's there are laying drunk in the streets and passed out on inn tables and old women in the street go "I sure did some mining back in my days! Woohoo!" Then there's the Seeq who suggests he starts watching Vaan's ass like a creeper... plus the possible sex jokes from Balthier.

Also, the concept of "Ye Olde Wyne Tavernes" has existed in RPGs for many a Yore.

Dwarves and Drinking are synonymous, methinks.

(I'm actually in an "Internet hiatus" at the moment where I stop being active in my social media accounts but I really just have to post this lol)

I really liked what Splint and Blade stated regarding Lightning's characterization. Until they unveiled the opening scenes, I was hopeful but also skeptical on what they're planning to do with her character for this title, but they did it, they set up the premise that I was expecting. And I'm almost sure that they'll go for what Blade said regarding on rediscovering her character since I don't see any other way for character development (as the devs keep saying she will have).

Personally, I always thought we never really got to fully see what her character was like in XIII. We saw perhaps half of it (?), given the critical situation she was put in. Maybe we understood most (if not all), her feelings and struggles as reactions to what's happening around her, but really not the entirety of her character's elements. Ok fine, this is not really uncommon in stories but I feel like her representation was still quite limited to an extent that some people tend to perceive and narrow her character down to being a "tough-ass sarcastic soldier girl who happens to have a soft side" (well often without the latter factor). I think of this description as the external elements, and perhaps through finding/rediscovering her humanity in LR they'll show more of her character's inner layers (at least more often than XIII did, where there were only hints and implications and we had to personally draw conclusions ourselves e.g. I think she's very sensitive). And I think that as her character goes through that, she'll essentially learn who she was and what made her the person she was.

Thinking about this, it just came to me how the title "Lightning Returns" kind of embodies this idea of rediscovering her character throughout the story.

@Alcohol issue: I've always seen those ratings quite stupid and illogic. Amost very game shows being a drunkard in a bad light, so why is this an issue? If the point is protecting children from bad influences, should we also ban adults from having a beer in front of their kids? And the same for smoking.

Actually it is illegal to have alcohol around a minor - from how the law was explained to me, and how I interpreted what I was being told. It's very complicated.

As for the warning, I'm not really caring much one way or another right now. I just am personally uncomfortable around people drinking and/or who are drunk, that's all. I'm not going to be swayed one way or the other because alcohol is used or pursued in the game.

It certainly isn't illegal to have alcohol around a minor. Supplying it to them is illegal, and possession of it (even without consumption) may be illegal for them (I believe this varies by state), but drinking around/in front of them or leaving your kid unsupervised at home in a house that is stocked with alcohol isn't.

A few years ago, my of age friend was denied an alcoholic drink at a restaurant she and I were at because I was still underage. I don't know if that was a state-wide law or just a restaurant policy, but it was stupid, either way.

I think it depends on the restaurant. I've been to some in NC where they carded everybody at the table if one person ordered and others that didn't.

Those ratings are really just to cover their bases as to the content consumers should expect. The little things usually aren't the major defining aspects of what goes into those game ratings, and I don't think it matters since people tend to ignore them anyway :monster:

Like I said, I grew up in Beer Land, USA, so being around Drunks and such was pretty common (and unsightly).

Incidentally, I have a German friend who was drinking in his homeland as early as 15 years old, and has no problem holding his own.

In fact one time he offered me some German Chocolate from a plate sampler.

Except he gave me some of his Dad's Chocolate mixed in by mistake (it has alcohol in it), yeauch. Never doing that again.

So yeah, even candy can be spiked (especially around this time of year) so be careful, but don't go overboard with caution like ESRB does.

I don't know, it was explained to me that if you have alcoholic beverages in your possession and a minor is around, it's illegal. For instance, a party - you really aren't supposed to have beer or any other alcohol available if children are there. Again, it could have been how I was told, and/or my interpretation. Also, as you said, it could also vary state by state (where as the US is involved.)

As said, for me, I've just always been wary and more than nervous, scared and angered by those who drink and excessively. I'm not used to it, and the results of too much of the substance, in myself or others.

I agree that ESRB ratings - well, at least in terms of mentioning "tobacco use" and "alcohol" is getting absurd. I remember feeling the same when Dirge of Cerberus came out. Big whoop. I can accept and understand that others may find it a topic to warn people about, but not me (despite aforementioned feelings about alcohol consumption.)

I dunno about restaurants, but over here, if you want to buy alcohol, all people have to identify themselves at the cashier. It's a bit silly off course, because you can just send the legal one out on his/her own or pass the cashier independently if you happen to know about it, but still.

In Pennsylvania, at a restaurant, if anyone at the table is below 21, someone must be over 25 or no one can get alcohol. Beyond that, I'm definitely not aware of any laws restricting consumption of alcohol in the presence of minors.

Unless the person is already an asshole, you don't have anything to fear (unless they're driving). Alcohol doesn't make people do anything they wouldn't normally think about or want to do. That's just an excuse for people to indulge in things they need an excuse to get away with.

Really, get shit-faced drunk sometime and make an effort to maintain yourself the way you would normally be. You'll find that while your coordination and balance are going to suffer regardless, and while you might be a little less shy, you aren't going to suddenly start thinking that robbing a convenience store for shits and giggles would be a swell idea.

Well, you know your date isn't going well when the girl wants to drink beer in a place that doesn't serve alcohol. personal experience

Speaking of which, I wonder if Lightning can actually get drunk in this game? Will the controls get reversed??? Heh. Would be the best time to get drunk if the world's about to end.

I wonder if she would start ranting about whatever she regrets not doing in the past.
