I was looking up info on Lindzei and I found some inconsistencies with Etro's and Lindzei's stories:

---First of all, Etro was created without powers...and yet later on she commands great power as a Goddess, even over Fal'Cie (defining the rule "Weak shall serve the Strong"...if that were true she would be at the bottom of the pyramid), much of it involving the Historia Crux...how exactly did she get those powers (the only means I see is through Chaos)? Not only that but being able to seal up Vanille and Fang during the War of Transgression? How exactly can she influence the world of the living?

---It says (in Fragments After) that Lindzei was responsible for making humans from Etro's blood when she died and went to the Unseen Realm. Yet how is it Etro was able to give humans a piece of chaos (a heart) while they are alive? (It makes little sense to give them a heart only when they die and pass on to Valhalla.)

---It's also strange what Orphan says about having 'two irreconcilable Focuses' (Slaughter and Salvation) regarding humans. What sort of Focus did Lindzei give him? The only logical reason I can think of is to culture soul fodder in order to trigger Etro's Gate opening (which makes sense, but seems more like something the Fal'Cie wanted rather than what Lindzei wanted, since Lindzei already left and was supposed to be following Bhunivelze' orders).

---(From the Article on Lindzei): It says Lindzei's task (Focus) was to protect Bhunivelze from all who would destroy him, and to wake him up from crystal slumber (much like what Lightning does) when the Gate was found.

Now here's what's fishy...if Etro's Gate already opened at 0 AF, wouldn't that be the sign to wake Bhunivelze? Then later, when it opens again at 500 AF, unleashing Chaos...wouldn't that also be a point where Bhunivelze would wake up (if he hadn't been awake already)? His goal at this point is to circumvent death and become immortal, and since Chaos has stopped time for 500 years...wouldn't that be close to what he wanted? That, and harnessing Chaos would allow anyone the ability to control monsters, have visions, and time travel!

Then there's the definition of the Arks: speculated armories for a war against Mwinn. For a war that never happened.

In keeping with Fang and Vanille being the equivalent of Lif and Lifthrasir (the survivors of Ragnarok) and projenitors of a new generation, I would think they would still be friends, but it seems like they don't hang around each other much. The look in Vanille's eye makes me think something's changed about her.

That, and there's mention that she can hear the voices of the dead and is treated like a saint.

Voices of the dead? How is that possible in a place where people don't really die? Sounds like something Chaos related.

And something tells me Bhunivelze has been planning this somehow. The fact that he's gathering 'Saved Souls' (which are comprised of Chaos) sounds suspicious too.

Etro lacks the power to create things from her body like Lindzei & Pulse.

Bhunivelze divided his power and created the Fal'Cie Lindzei and Fal'Cie Pulse. Etro just looked on as power, which she didn't not have, was given to Lindzei and Pulse and she saw them, in the same manner as the Paternal God, divide their power and give life to many Fal'Cie.

Etro did not know why she had been shunned by Bhunivelze. Why weren't the things given to Pulse and Lindzei given to her as well? She just looked on without cursing them or envying them.

Of course... Fal'Cie are different than humans; Fal'Cie do not have emotions. Etro did not understand: Why did humans naturally feel indignation or suffered feelings like alienation or isolation.

Etro, who did nothing but serve as a spectator, tried to imitate their birthing of Fal'Cie by harming her own body. She thought, just as their power took on another form and became a new l'Cie, her blood would possibly give birth to something. She felt that maybe if she could bring life to something she could catch Bhunivelze's attention. Maybe if she could do the same thing as them, things would change.

I guess when the gate opens for a soul to come Etro slips some Chaos out.

Barthandelus came up with the mass sacrifice plan.

Then later, when it opens again at 500 AF, unleashing Chaos...wouldn't that also be a point where Bhunivelze would wake up (if he hadn't been awake already)? The gate wasn't opened enough I'm guessing.

I don't know what to think about how Square Enix retcons and/or doesn't tell the whole story to things, the issue with Etro (and many other things) included. In the original myth it is said that Etro was given no power by Bhunivelze. She was given no focus. I am of the belief that when she encountered Mwynn, she received not only a focus but also power from the disappearing goddess. Basically, Mwynn handed (if not all, a part) of what she was to Etro, hence that's how Etro gained the powers she does have.

And she passed that tradition down to the Farseers.

Yeah, only way I can see is through Chaos. She might have had the powers from the very beginning though as Kuja pointed out that the specific power she was not given was being able to produce children.

Wasn't the explanation simply that Etro pitied their destinies of being born only to die so she gave them Chaos which equates to human spirit?

---It's also strange what Orphan says about having 'two irreconcilable Focuses' (Slaughter and Salvation) regarding humans. What sort of Focus did Lindzei give him? The only logical reason I can think of is to culture soul fodder in order to trigger Etro's Gate opening (which makes sense, but seems more like something the Fal'Cie wanted rather than what Lindzei wanted, since Lindzei already left and was supposed to be following Bhunivelze' orders).

That's the tragedy on the fal'Cie's part. The Focus of finding the Door of Souls was just passed down to them through Lindzei, but in their perception it is the Focus that would please him and bring him (or her, whatever) back. So it's not that they're doing what they wanted, it's heavily tied to their Focus which makes them simply tools for the fal'Cie gods.

---(From the Article on Lindzei): It says Lindzei's task (Focus) was to protect Bhunivelze from all who would destroy him, and to wake him up from crystal slumber (much like what Lightning does) when the Gate was found.

It was opened for a very short time though since Etro desperately shut the gate. Might also have to with Lindzei's disappearance.

I think it pretty much implies that Bhunivelze didn't know the existence of Chaos in the Invisible World. In other words Chaos actually harms/hinders him. And harnessing Chaos... humans are the only ones who should be able to do it. If the Gods (bar Etro and Mwynn) and fal'Cie could do it too then we'd easily know it because of its powers and what they could do with it (although weren't there certain fal'Cie who could time travel?).

As for the Arks it's related to what I said above; they're armories that were made to fight the menace beyond along with Mwynn, which Bhunivelze doesn't actually know what which is why he did such preparations.

Actually I think they're together since apparently the group Fang's leading and their searches are tied to the Salvation Council. The artefact they're searching has to do with dead souls too, from what I remember.

That, and there's mention that she can hear the voices of the dead and is treated like a saint.

Voices of the dead? How is that possible in a place where people don't really die? Sounds like something Chaos related.

Yeah. I'm also speculating that she'll be some sort of messenger between Serah and Lightning.

And something tells me Bhunivelze has been planning this somehow. The fact that he's gathering 'Saved Souls' (which are comprised of Chaos) sounds suspicious too.

What I don't get is how is Bhunivelze
still asleep
?

How could he speak to Lightning, let alone wake her up as well as give her clothes (which turn out - if I understand it correctly - to be her powers)

I am still wondering
about Bhunivelze's plan on finding and defeating Mwynn
. I do hope that will be addressed...

Toriyama has a chance to explain everything in regards to the story as well as give it a satisfactory conclusion. Please be aware that when I say satisfactory, I'm not saying it has to be a positive ending for the characters. I sincerely hope that he doesn't fuck up. XIII was a good, albeit imperfect, stand-alone game. XIII-2 is where the whole thing got screwed up... Not to mention some of the details given (and generously translated here by Hito (and I believe one or two others) and elsewhere by a few other kind people) in the Ultimanias.)

Yeah, it was a great stand-alone game. As much as I enjoy theorizing and wished that they'd expand more on the mythology back then, introducing time travel in XIII-2 was something I really didn't like and it messed up a lot of things. I do hope it arrives to a satisfying conclusion as well. LR definitely sounds more of a sequel to XIII-2 than XIII-2 was to XIII and they gotta keep their word when they said it's very complete.

The only fal'Cie that time traveled(to my knowledge) was Cactuar because he was hanging with Snow.

Etro did something similar as well.

About chaos being in all things, and even the fal'Cie (in its own way):

Espers Eternal - Bhunivelze Sleeps fragment description said:
Bhunivelze Sleeps:

In the physical world, it contains within its form endless chaos. By the will of the deities, it gives birth to all living things. I speak of crystal.

The eternal dream world of the crystal lies within the Unseen World. Even the gods long to find their way to that place. In all crystal, the heart the shines most brightly is called Bhunivelze.

Etro did something similar as well.

But Etro was not asleep.

The only thing I can think of is that after Bhunivelze tasked Lightning, and set whatever it was he wished into motion, he waited. That's not the same as sleep, but... Translation or choice of words on the author's side perhaps (a cultural thing)?

Also, have we ever really found out what Lindzei's desire is/was? That's the name of a fragment from XIII-2.

My guess is that s/he wished to be free of focus; to live without being bound to something. I wonder if we'll ever concretely be told. I wonder if in her/his searching and gathering of knowledge, that s/he learned the reason s/he exists is because Bhunivelze made a mistake with Etro... (Sadness!)

I wish Square would release Nojima-san's five page story he wrote that is the original, complete FNC.

I guess now's a good as time as any to post this:

Mwynn was consumed by Chaos, yet Etro could control it to some extent and ebb its flow a bit and even break it off in pieces. That's another puzzle I'm trying to figure out.

Then there's the very concept of Crystals, which are said to be frozen Chaos.

"Time and Memory, frozen in Crystal". If Time and Memory are the elements that make up Chaos, then it would stand to reason that one could control Time and Memories themselves.

And if Memories are an extension of Souls and Life, and Time is the passage and growth of that Life...well, without Chaos, nothing would truly exist as we currently understand it.

Here's the thing, and forgive me for using older FF mythos in to this...but to me it's necessary to explain.

It's said (in FFIII's Mythos) that there is a World of Light and a World of Darkness...wherever the two meet, therein lies the Void. It's said to be the birthplace of the Void (when Light and Dark clash).

It's been likened that this 'Chaos' is the same as the Void as a malevolent-yet-benevolent force.

If you were to say this "World of Light" was "Memories/Life" and this "World of Darkness" was "The Expanse of Time/Reconfigurement of Essences/Confluence", and should the two ever meet, both worlds would eventually be devoid of what defines them.

Just as Time and Memory can be crystalized or become alive...so could anything in the world that exists that is made up of these forces. The reason for that crystalization could be will or power, or some other reason entirely (a fulfilled Focus or chosen fulfillment could be the reason).

When Mwynn stated that Balance must be wrought to the Seen and Unseen Realms...I immediately thought of the Cloud of Darkness. A being born from the Void, born from the clash of essences.

It was the Cloud of Darkness' (chosen?) purpose to bring balance to both Light and Darkness...even should she destroy both in the process.

It was said (in FFIII's history) that the Light became too bright in the past, and that the power of Darkness had to overcome it to bring balance to the world. The Warriors of Darkness had to act. And while that balance came at great cost, it was because of that conflict that the Cloud of Darkness was born in the first place.

Now...parallel this with Bhunivelze' conflict with his mother Mwynn. Though there is no immediate information on how he ended up killing her (or any conflicts that lead to her demise). Bhunivelze' existence is defined by the fear of death or in this case, the desire for Eternal Life (or "Light" if you've been following my analogy). A fear of extinguishing Life and Memories.

He feared anything that reminded him of "Darkness" (Time, Death, Destruction), so it would make sense that he would spurn Etro. A being he had created ironically from "memory" of his mother's likeness.

As Etro kills herself in desperation to find purpose, Bhunivelze tasks Pulse and Lindzei with finding the Gate to the Unseen Realm and find and destroy this "Dark/Unseen Realm" completely, thinking Mwynn has cursed him to die. Likely he is out of his depth.

Mwynn's meeting with Etro leads to the simple fact that this Chaos is an inevitable part of existence, but because of its nature cannot be destroyed or controlled entirely. That's why she states (before being consumed) that Balance is needed. A balance that can (knowingly) only be achieved through Crystal as that is the only means of freezing Time (Darkness) and Memory (Light) together.

What this can all mean is that once that balance was lost, both worlds were disrupted, and 'something' (not saying it's Lightning here) will happen to put things back in balance again.

Based on the idea that one force adapts to overcome another force that is out of balance (like a rubber band being pulled taught will eventually either snap or break), I think something is going to happen, if it hasn't already. Something beyond Bhunivelze' knowledge.

If Bhunivelze is seeking to control the Chaos for himself, or if it's someone else like Lindzei, or even the Maker who made Bhunivelze and Mwynn...either way, I think the Chaos is beyond their reckoning.

As for what that could mean for Lightning and her friends...it could either spell doom, or a dark hope.

If Mwynn wasn't the representation of the chaos, I do believe she was the one who understood it most of all. Why she never imparted this information onto Bhunivelze is a mystery; perhaps, she did not have time (or Bhunivelze is/was too young to grasp it fully) or it is something that she imparted on him, but being that he is her opposite, it is something that is not to be his concern, and he will never fully grasp the information that she knows.

As I said before, the world's myths speak of a time when there was nothing but darkness (void, chaos), and the first god(s) emmerged - from that darkness, but being(s) of light. I mentioned the story of Tiamat, but I'm more familiar with one of the myths surrounding the birth of Atum-Ra. He came forth from Nun (his father, personification of that nothingness, that time before everything.) He willed himself into being; and, from him came all the gods and all of everything seen and unseen. He is a sun god in the religion of the Ancient Egyptians.

Also, when Lightning sees Bhunivelze in the flashback, it is very much like near death recollections from people who claim to have been before a great shining light in darkness. It is said that is the Ultimate, the All; I guess in Final Fantasy XIII terms, The Maker of the the ones who birthed the mother of The Maker of The Makers. (While it could be coincidence, I do not believe it is. Of course, I rarely believe in coincidence anymore. Sometimes, yes, but most times, no.)

Blade, simply put, I loved your explanation.

Personally, one speculation I have, is that Mwynn is - if she is a personification of chaos, or the one who last knew and was of chaos - pulling the strings here. I wouldn't be surprised if she hung on to meet Etro purposely. I wouldn't be surprised if it is she who was the guiding force that led Lindzei to make humans (knowing that Etro would find favor with them, and giving them a bit of chaos each; because, you have to realize, the fal'Cie would be "light" even though they and Bhunivelze also are of chaos, aka "darkness".) Of course, it could be Mwynn who is the truth behind Yeul.

I just hope we get the final answers. I don't mind some questions, but not major plot points that can and do make or break the entire story.

Wow, this is new to me. Where was this mentioned?

And if Memories are an extension of Souls and Life, and Time is the passage and growth of that Life...well, without Chaos, nothing would truly exist as we currently understand it.
But this information basically points that perfect Chaos = absolute nothingness in existence."There is no concept of time, space, or form."

But it was specifically stated that he wants to destroy Mwynn ultimately, unless this translation--

He believed this was a curse laid on the world by his mother Mwynn. Bhunivelze knew he had to destroy her.

To do this, he must search for the door. The door to the invisible world where his mother waited.

--is wrong?

Very interesting explanation though Blade. I was playing FFIII for the first time earlier this year and I did easily notice the similarities in the mythos.

Makes me think of everyone's stances. If Bhunivelze yearns for absolute light and Mwynn yearns for balance, then there should be an entity who yearns for absolute darkness. Chaos was natural, but perhaps due to its increasing quantity it gave birth to a new being? Not necessarily, but at least someone who would be it.

That reminds me, how was the balance disrupted again? I can only vaguely remember the chaos being a by-product of the fal'Cie-making.

Perhaps this whole thing was what Lightning was referring to when she said "The brightest light casts the darkest shadows." in the trailer?

Wow, this is new to me. Where was this mentioned?

Crystals being formed from Chaos is basically how you capture monsters in FFXIII-2. Monsters normally die and dissipate within the Chaos, but by Crystalizing them, their 'memory' is retained to be summoned once more.

The reverse could also be said of a L'Cie. When a L'Cie (who contains a Heart of Chaos) fulfills their Focus, they become as Crystal.

But this information basically points that perfect Chaos = absolute nothingness in existence."There is no concept of time, space, or form."

Time is measured by Change, and Chaos is an ever-Changing concept. If Chaos were "absolutely nothing" (a True Void), then it wouldn't be able to become something else, such as Monsters, Human Hearts, or whatever else.

Remember, Exdeath states that everything began and will end with the Void. If it truly began with the Void, that means the Void has substance, maybe not "concretely defined" substance, but substance all the same.

By stating 'There is no Concept of Time', they're either saying there is no concept of change (which is untrue because changes do occur within the Chaos all the time) or that Time as it is understood within Valhalla can't be compared to the Living Realm's "sense of time". For Lighting, yes, time passed, if it didn't, she wouldn't have entered Crystal Stasis for 500 years and would continue to be stuck in a loop for several Eternities. It's just that Time is of a different pacing and form (a much more chaotic 'looping' time, you might call it). A Time within Chaos, you might call it.

But it was specifically stated that he wants to destroy Mwynn ultimately, unless this translation--

--is wrong?

The translation still says "He believed", so it's still an assumption on his part that Mwynn is to blame.

Again, Mwynn reveals the truth to Etro, so you might say Etro tried or is trying to pass this knowledge on to her father.

If anyone sided with Chaos, it would be those who embraced it. Namely humanity. Caius in particular seems to want the destruction that Chaos will bring, but at the same time, because he has embraced it, it won't let him die.

That reminds me, how was the balance disrupted again? I can only vaguely remember the chaos being a by-product of the fal'Cie-making.

Perhaps this whole thing was what Lightning was referring to when she said "The brightest light casts the darkest shadows." in the trailer?

The disruption and imbalance occurred when the Chaos merged Valhalla with Pulse. That happened 500 years after Lighting Returns begins.

Of course, there were signs it was going to happen long before that, namely when the first Paradox occurred in the Timeline (when Etro freed the L'Cie from Crystal).

Of course, that wasn't the cause either. The makers abandoning the Fal'Cie, the Fal'Cie betraying humans by making them L'Cie...and so on through history.

The first 'Sin' you might say would be when Bhunivelze first killed his mother.

Blade

I also want to add, regarding the concept of Exdeath.

He was nothing but a Tree, until people began sealing away cursed spirits and all manner of beings inside him.

You might say because of that 'corrupt chaos' that's how he gained life and sentience, much the same as a human.

Then later, when he yearns for and is consumed by the Void...he isn't completely consumed, instead, he is reconfigured in to "Neo" Exdeath.

How can that be if the Void is considered 'nothing' in an absolute sense?

Consider too, that it was Exdeath's desire to merge two worlds by destroying each Crystal that kept those worlds separate in order to find a means to obtain the Void in the first place.

Much like Exdeath, Caius seeks an end, but does not know if that is a true end. Thus he suffers on, knowing he cannot die as he is bound to the Chaos, much like Garland was.

Exdeath also says to Prishe: "You house an immeasurable Void within you."

What can that be except Prishe has an "inner-chaos"? It's said anyone who can control their Inner-Chaos can obtain great power with Magic and more.

Like anyone else: a chaotic heart, housed as a Crystal.

Because they held chaos so close, the world once again was in balance.

That may be so, but human emotions can easily sway and fall in to disarray.

Caius wouldn't listen to reason even when Noel spoke with him about the truth about Yeul's feelings towards him. So he ended up killing the Goddess anyway. He gave in to the Chaos of his own heart.

Because the Goddess was no longer there to staunch the flow of Chaos, things fell out of balance once more.

People became nihilistic, depressed, downtrodden, celebrant, obsessive, impulsive, and more, simply because the Chaos in their hearts could now roam free with the world heading towards destruction. Either because of the Chaos, or because the world coming to an end because of the Chaos. Either way meant doom.

Fal'Cie who hold no such emotions might be immune to the greater effects of Chaos, but they know of the destructive essence it wields and can do to living beings.

This may play a factor with Lightning's and Hope's sealed emotions as well.
