London Olympics 2012

It didn't get any better. And, as much as I love the Beatles, I do wish Paul McCartney would retire already.

I havent seen the full ceremony but I saw excerpts and......no.

I guess theyre going with the romanticised idea of Britain that the rest of the world has...cups of tea and Dickens and shit. Cos we don't really have a culture that can be summed up very easily. The closest I can get is fish and chips and horrible housing :monster:

Honestly it was extremely boring. I don't think there's anything I'm going to remember tomorrow.

I thought it was pretty good up to the point where the Olympic rings came together in the sky. After that it has been totally random - "look at all this stuff we have! Hospitals! With sick children! Some fairy tales! Some sitcoms! Some musicians! Dizzy Rascal!"

I haven't "got" it. In fact I think it's been quite boring.

After hearing they were apparently trying to cram everything from stereotypes to popular culture into it, I was afraid something like this would happen. Still want to see it though. Doesn't seem to have appeared on youtube yet :awesome:.

Missed most of the ceremony because it starts at 4am here, missed the parade of my own country and MR BEAN! ARRGGGG. When I woke up it's already in the T's. No worries, the internet can show anything. Nice fireworks btw and the Queen is so pink. Probably what I hated was the rendition of "Come Together" many of the notes were flat that I think Paul is probably shaking his head somewhere in the stadium.

Mr Bean was the international hero the Olympics needed.

His actions transcend verbal language :monster:

Nah, he was probably thinking "thank god they're doing that to one of John's songs and not one of mine"... though I didn't think it was too bad, myself. Alex Turner isn't the most accomplished vocalist, but for that song, he didn't really need to be. The rest of the band did a good job.

I really don't want to leave the impression of a chauvinist, but after the comments about the Greek athletes that I heard (always tied to the economic situation)...

Pardon me, I'm kinda pissed.

Another thing I like about the Olympics is when the favourite doesn't win, except in those rare occassions where you really want them to win because their life sucks or something.

There's a lot of athletes who have hilariously just fallen flat on their performances

Most popular sports are completely random and unpredictable in the olympics anyway. Football for example is wholly unremarkable during the olympics, in my experience.

Opening ceremony was alright, not a big fan of artsy bollocks like that, stopped watching and went to sleep once they started bringing in the countries. The NHS-sponsored thing was a bit random, like a giant sponsored thing. Which, I guess, is a british thing - make government services like the NHS look like a business with a brand name and advertising. Like putting "Major of London" under pretty much every public announcement kinda thing. Selfish much?

Most popular Olympic sports in the US are basketball, swimming, gymnastics and track & field. Most popular sports in Puerto Rico are basketball and boxing. We watch boxing because it's the only sport were have a shot of winning a medal for the first time since 1996.

Shall be interesting watching the Chinese swimmer's (Ye Shiwen) career progress. Hopefully she isn't a cheat like everyone thinks. She even swam faster than the male gold medal winner in her last trip down the pool or something.

I was so happy for Great Britains bronze in gymnastics! I love when the underdog team wins something ^^

edit bronze, Japan edged them out >.>

Firstly: it's Mayor of London :P

Secondly: I completely agree with you about football. It should not be part of the Olympics. The reason I say that is because if you asked all of the world's top footballers whether they'd rather win the World Cup, the Champions League (not even a national competition) or an Olympic Gold medal, none of them would choose the latter. The Olympics should be the pinnacle of the sports involved in it, like it undoubtedly is for athletics and many other sports.

I was watching some of it by the beach bar last night and thinking... who are the random people they choose to play for the football teams? IDGI. It's like eurovision, they seem to pick crappy second rate people to represent the country because no one really cares about it. If they actually cared for a half a heartbeat they might win.

Yeah, football and tennis n' such are shit olympic events.

In other news, Australia are continuing their streak of fail. This is where all my tax dollars go (well, a tiny percentage of it anyway :P).

Hey at least Australia has 4 medals right now, they get 2 more and they'll tie our all time record. :monster:

I agree on the football thing at least on the men's side, the women take the Olympics a lot more seriously. I think for the men they send their under 21 or under 23 team.

They are only allowed to pick three players over the age of 23, and at least 15 under it. That's why. It's because the Olympics are meant to be for amateurs. Barring all professional footballers would mean that hardly anyone would be eligible, so they reached a compromise.
