Something I did notice when I was replaying part of the game last night too, and anyone is free to use it, is that I've seen a lot of Clotis say "Cloud didn't agree to be her bodyguard, he was silent." As proof that he didn't want to be her bodyguard. Yet when Reno comes into the church, Cloud pretty much throws himself in front of Aerith to protect her. So for someone who didn't want to be her bodyguard, he sure jumped at the chance. "Words aren't the only way to tell someone how you're feeling" indeed

Sneaking out of her house at midnight.
Words aren't the only way to show how you feel.
And he never did agree to be her bodyguard. But Cloud isn't some all consuming dickcheese at that point, no matter what people want to think so they can think Aerith 'CHANGED' him. Escorting a girl home is hardly worth charging for in any case.

The LTDs have taught me that there are two ways to interpret that scene:
(1) Cloud was surprised and speechless when Aerith asked him to be her bodyguard and offered herself up to him for a date. He stepped in to stop the Turks from kidnapping her and so indirectly agreed to be her bodyguard. He decided to walk her home and then make his own way back to Tifa and AVALANCHE after that.

(2) Cloud was surprised and happy when Aerith asked him to be her bodyguard and offered herself up to him for a date. He immediately agreed, unlike the situation with Tifa where he had to be prompted/manipulated by guilt to agree. Obviously, this scene proves that there were romantic feelings between Cloud and Aerith from the start.

I hate to keep harping on this thing, but why do so many C/A interpretations need to include a comparison to Tifa?
Personally, I think it's all to do with making Aerith 'win' over Tifa.

I'd like to inquire why flower selling and mere days of meeting qualify as romantic while a near life time of acquaintance, determination to protect her and even joining her resistance group doesn't? : (

Cloud hadn't joined AVALANCHE by the beginning of FFVII, and was - as far as I could see - only with them for as long as they paid. There's a scene in the game in which Tifa asks him to join, but he refuses. After they found out that Sephiroth was alive, he seemed more willing to work with them without pay.

She doesn't ask him to join, she asks him to keep helping, and he agrees.
Hell, he only worked with them because Tifa asked.

If we like Tifa 'cuz of boobs', IE, Sexually wanted her, would it not make more sense to argue her as unattached? I mean, no one really wants to self insert as Cloud, so why would anyone wanting Tifa want her with Cloud?

The one quote where Nojima(co-creater/writer of the story)said Cloud and Tifa have too many problems and they will never be solved. And if Aerith was alive, that Cloud and her would have a better romantic relationship.

To me, that says A LOT! Nojima is declaring that Cloud and Tifa aren't good together and have too many problems but that Aerith would have been better for him.
