He nodded to her suggestion of a date as payment after telling her that being her bodyguard would cost her. He directly agreed to be her escort.

He bobs his head slightly, then shakes it waving his hand in front of his nose. I've never been quite sure what he means by that overall gesture. Maybe 'I'll take you home but forget payment' or 'Yeah sure whatever' or 'Egads woman, what did you EAT?'

How did Cloud get manipulated into something he wanted to do anyway? Joining SOLDIER was largely about impressing Tifa.

Because Tifa is evil, clingy, and manipulative. And she forced Cloud into wanting to impress her.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to put my brain back in. It's hard to live without it for long.

He was no more manipulated into the promise than if a dude (i.e. me) asked a chick out and she said, "Well, okay, but will it be alright if we have sex on the first date?"

That needs to happen to be more often. Just saying.

So in Midgar he's all ready to walk out of her life forever. Out of desperation to salvage her childhood dream, Tifa brings up the promise, hoping to guilt him into staying because only a louse would walk out of his childhood friend whom he'd once promised to protect. Her scheme works. And Cloud has been manipulated into staying on.

It's pretty much true, it's just a very negative way of putting it, really. Though it also misses out that she's trying to keep him close by so that she can watch over his mental state... which isn't at all selfish.

In the first place, the ones who say that he was manipulated tend to deny that Cloud had ever wanted to impress Tifa, or just assert that it was only due to a silly childhood crush that he had long outgrown by the time we see the opening cinematic on FFVII Disk 1.

Yup. Totally outgrown in the five years he didn't have.

From there, the promise is seen as something that he did not want to make, but was forced onto him instead by the pushy little town darling who had dreams of being rescued by a hero.

And that's so fucktardedly wrong it doesn't even deserve recognition.

It's how I see it, really o____o"

Also; why does it matter that Cloud was willing to go on the date with Aerith? I mean, it's just a date. Not a vow for the two to spend eternity together. There's nothing wrong with Cloud being interested in other woman. In the end, he still ends up with Tifa, and not because he's ~moving on~, but because he's genuinely interested in her and cares about her romantically.
