Moving the site

We're going to move the site to Bluehost in a bit, dunno how long it'll take. With luck, downtime will be minimal, but it may take up to 24 hours for the domain to transfer properly.

I actually have no clue if and how long there will be downtime, so :monster: @ that. There may be a misalignment with the forum / news posts during the move (i.e. posting on the old host while the database is being transferred to the new), but you'll just have to live with that, :monster:.

No, I don't know when the move will be exactly, Bluehost says it can take up to 7 days, but I'm fairly sure it'll be faster than that. In any case, we might beat the old host from locking our site due to excess bandwith usage, :monster:.

When I moved one of my sites from one host to Bluehost, it was very quick, though it was a much smaller site. Good to hear you'll be using a better host though.

Yeah, that's amazing... Well I'm glad we'll have the extra space and it's good to know that we *are* growing.

I've used Hostrocket in the past, Though 1 GB of Storage and Unlimited Bandwidth wasn't a bad deal.

Wasn't bad for 200 a year. But I didn't require a whole server. Just Shared. Glad to hear you might beat the clock...or maybe you have and I've not noticed.

We certainly outgrew that fast.

Yeah, at least compared to my other sites (FFOF and my own blog). But then, FFOF's only a forum, doesn't have as much imagery as our frontpage has - I downloaded all images the other day, there's 1694 images on TLS (including thumbnails btw) already, a total size of 90 MB. That, and both the forums and frontpage are getting almost 400 visitors / day each (that's 800 total), where the forums are getting almost 5000 pageviews and the frontpage between 500 and 1000 a day.

Not that I have any clue how that compares to other sites btw. It's a lot more than FFOF is getting anyway.

About when will the transfer take place?
[/quote]

Depends on when I get the domain transfer information and how long the domain transfer will take - with luck, I could do it today, :monster:. I've already set up the new hosting and they're able to transfer the domain itself, once I get word from the old host (they need to unlock the domain in order for the new host to take over), I can start the transfer process.

During transfer, I'll close the forums down, not for any technical reason, just so that you won't post while the database has already been transferred to the new host, :monster:.

I'll close the forums down, install the forums and frontpage software onto the new host, transfer the database, and once all that's done, I'll re-open the forums. With luck, you'll only experience a downtime of an hour, maybe a few hours, with probably a max of 24 hours. But no guarantees on that, :monster:.

While I'm at it, I could goan upgrade the frontpage software - a new version (2.7) of Wordpress is out, with a revamped control panel and some features that right now we only have as addons. I'd have to look up all the new features though.

Sounds good. It comes at a good time, as the holidays will mostly be spent with folks being dragged away from their computers by family & such, and hopefully that means that less people'll notice the downtime.

Hrm, the hosting company's late in sending me the code - guess I'll have to wait until after christmas or something. Worst case it'll be next year, but it depends on the hoster's working dates etc. The two christmas days are almost always free days though.

So as I understand it, people are looking to move this to vBulletin. I've seen the details on it, and I think I could do it, but I wanted to know what you thought.

It dosen't sound so complex, but of course one of you techies will have to manage the actual conversion as I'm a virtual noob on that.

I don't really want any much involvement aside from the donation, thb. Just want to help out.

When the move is complete, will you be able to put back up the high-res images that were taken down?

I miss the high res artwork and scans :monster:

vB might be an option, but I'd only go for it under a few conditions, i.e. that there's enough donations to repay my initial investment (i.e. a year's hosting at two different hosters), pay for at least another year, and then enough donations to afford a new vB license. And then I'd rather wait for getting it until I'm sure we'll be able to get vB 4.0, seeing that the 3.X series is getting very old, :monster:.

Yup, v'rly. Bandwidth shouldn't be a problem anymore on there.

Speaking of, I should go after that code thingy again.

Edit: Oh wait, it's already there :monster:. I wonder why I missed it. I can start the move right now, if it pleases you lot.

I'll do it later today, first I'll get lunch and I have to go shopping for some basic furniture for my move next year, fgj. Gives you lot some time to prepare, :monster:.

I've re-opened the forums again on recommendation of some TLS members that did go to FFOF. The progress hasn't exactly gone as planned, although the majority of the move has been completed. Right now, we're waiting for the domain to transfer to the new registrar (= the organization that manages the domain name, it has to be transferred from some German organization to Bluehost's own registrar), which can take up to seven days (from last week, so it'll probably happen somewhere this week).

If you at one point re-encounter the 'forums closed' message and/or receive loads of errors due to the forum software not being configured properly yet for the new host (there's some settings that need to be altered, but I need the domain to be transferred properly before I can do that), it'll mean that the domain has been transferred, and you'll be seeing the forum on the new host.

Once the domain has been transferred, I'll re-transfer the database to the new host, fix the settings on the new host, and re-open the whole place, for great justice.

In the meantime, feel free to post on here again. I won't give any guarantees on how long the forums will remain available, seeing that it might take up to seven days, but might also be longer or shorter, depending on when the registrar(s) can be arsed.

kthx for your patience, etc. Also, we need a proper site / forums news section or something, both active projects and feedback / suggestions don't really cut it :/.

Okies, works for me. Keep that and me in mind, as I'd like to help out, mostly money-wise, just so you understand.

The forum is working fine for me so far, btw.
