New Dissidia Arcade Game (NT)

Versus means opposite/contrast. A guy on reddit thought that it was chosen because XVs story is the opposite of XIII. XIII was about going against fate and battling gods, while XV was the other way around, accepting fate and battling with them.

This was always the intention tbh. It was "versus" because it was the opposite of XIII tonally.

I don't care what you guys think, when the original Versus XIII Trailer came out, that was MY FRIGGAN INITIAL IMPRESSION.

I'm entitled to my impression, and "Versus" implies "Fighting" to me.

And you can't really argue what the "original intent" was, because the "original intent" was scrapped and replaced, besides.

To say nothing of all the ideas from XIII alone that were most likely scrapped as well.

Speaking of which, Dissidia NT's Eden stage reminds me of the original production concept for XIII.

I think many of us initially thought of a fighting game when we saw the name, but what the game was intended to be -- and the reasoning behind the name -- was rather quickly explained. We even got trailers in 2010 and 2011 (while the "Versus" name was still in use and Nomura was still director) demonstrating gameplay remarkably similar to what we received for the final game (i.e. FFXV).

The rebranding didn't happen until some point in 2012.

[Nice idea. I wonder then how Agito XIII would have played into the (quasi?)-shared XIII universe.

The only thing that changed about Type-0 was its name. It still uses FNC elements -- including Etro, Pulse, Lindzei, l'Cie and the Focus -- in almost identical fashion.

All I'm gonna say, Tres, is that maybe I didn't read the Interviews back then, but when the trailers hinted that Noct and Stella would fight one another (or even Proto Ravus in his Mage form), I was at least remotely convinced there would be SOME kind of Armiger confronation. That never happened, and I was disappointed.

While the end result was
a fight with Ardyn's Armiger
, I am by no means going to change my mind on an Interview I NEVER saw up to now.

Dissidia makes some of these dream confronations possible, so let me at least feel fulfilled and vindicated in that regard.

Like you guys never wanted Squall to fight Cloud before Dissidia was invented?

My dream matches were Lightning and Noctis, or even Caius vs Cecil!

Oh, there's nothing wrong at all with dreaming of these match-ups. I'm just saying it was pretty much always clear what that particular game was going to be. :monster:

I don't care what you guys think

A debate forum might not be the best place for you to be at, then?

I don't understand why you appear to be so belligerant, Blade. That isn't like you. Of course, there's a chance there might be a joking nuance that I missed. If that's the case, I apologise!!

And while we're on the topic; there's nothing wrong with interpreting the information in one way or another, regardless of whether it's correct or not. You're entitled to your opinion but you can't really say "Versus should have been about FF characters battling each other because the word means that to me" when the word itself can (and it did, in fact) carry other meanings. It's like cherry picking the meaning and shoving it down other people's throats.

You could argue that Tres and the rest are doing the same, only in the opposite direction, but... in this case, they're using "Word of God" (Square, Nomura & Co.) and I'd wager their thoughts on the matter are more relevant than ours!

Alex, me and Tres go back a ways, and he knows I don't get mad about stuff easily unless I'm cornered.

What you have to understand is that I grew up on Fighting Game Crossovers and Sonic and Knuckles with "Lock-on Technology".

So when three Final Fantasy games "claim" to be interconnected as one large mythos (kinda like the World of Ivalice), you have no idea how excited and passionate that makes me as an FF fan in terms of its possibilities.

So when somebody tells me a decade later that this wasn't what they had in mind at all, and that so n' so originally said 'this' was how it would end up, color me disappointed and disbelieving.

This all took place before Dissidia was invented too, so it was a big buzzword to me back then.

I'm not saying Tres or anyone else is wrong about the truth, I'm saying that the "truth for me" was my own feelings and impressions back then. That was my personal Versus XIII experience. And I won't change that. (Kudos to Shademp for catching on to that.)

Even when Dissidia did come out, they gave us player Icons of Ace from Agito and Noctis, as if to say those two would be added to Dissidia's roster. It was a lot of hype back then.

So now, almost 13 years later, we finally get to see Ace and Noctis together with Lightning all in one game. I feel pretty lucky to have even THAT MUCH of an experience to enjoy.

That's what it really is about, being honest to my feelings regardless of any facts.

Speaking of Tres, this one goes out to you, my friend!

After this video I did some more training on the Gunblade timing, but it's still very tricky. I wish you could control the A.I.'s habits more.

This match would've been more fun if Ultimecia was spamming HP attacks more and not running away as much. Still, it's cool you can block HP attacks with a Defense Buff.

Some Post-Game Info for anyone interested:

If you beat Story Mode's main routes, and unlock the final boss Shinryu, after beating him a new Map opens up that lets you have access to all Summon Boss Battles at any time.

The first time you fight and defeat them nets you an additional 1,000 Gil, but if you manage to defeat them on Hard Mode you unlock that particular Music theme to listen to and use as you wish.

A couple things to note:

---Provoke, Mighty Strikes, Poisonga, and HP Regen along with a good Marksman "Mage" will see you through most normal boss fights. Y'shtola is probably the best Marksman in the game against bosses.

---These fights don't give you anything in the way of EXP or Gil, so really they're just good for practice for Hard Mode (you're better off using Gauntlet and Core Battle for grinding to make your allies smarter).

---Also note that the character you use most often will level up more than allies, so if you're controlling a Crystal A rank character, they're already maxed out essentially so switch to another character (Mages are good for Core Battles, Fighters are good for regular battles, but keep in mind the difficulty effects how fast you grind, so you may want to use Core Battles to level up faster).

---In Hard Mode, the boss will ALWAYS target you, regardless of Provoke, and your allies will only have so much Bravery to help you. So you better memorize their attack patterns and use the additional Ability slots your allies have for something more useful like Poisonga, Share Bravery, or what you may think you need (Perfect Defense/Mighty Guard might help against bosses in this mode too).

I picked up my package last night and while I haven't had a chance to play the game (busy AF) I'm still super happy! God knows it was an annoying process, but it's now mine! The bust (lol) was smaller than I expected and the music CD's track-time was shorter, but still!! It's mine, it's mine! Much excite. ^^

I played a little of it today and enjoyed it. I don't know if it has the same magic as the first, but I'm thinking it'll be a fun diversion. ^^

Magic as it used to be is almost exclusive to Marksmen, though a few projectile attacks for Vanguards can be used in mid air or ground only.

The rest are Buff/Debuff EX skills.

That said, I hope we hear some DLC news soon, I hate being in the dark.

xD No, I didn't mean magic as a game mechanic. I meant more of the "feel" of the whole game. I was quite obsessed with the original Dissidia (not so much for Duodecim) and I'm rather doubting that Dissidia NT is going to top that (for me), but at least, I do feel it will be a worthwhile venture. ^^

I suspect this game will go through some changes before they're done with it.

There's even a Boss Rush Gauntlet to unlock, so I think they want this to be expanded over time, as there's barely any info or backgrounds and profiles like Duodecim had.

^That was pretty good. Like, I feel the same way. NT is a far cay from the quality of other competitive fighters out there, but seeing these characters in full 1080p/60fps ignites that FF passion in you. I'm currently playing through VI for the first time because Terra's NT design immediately drew me in and I wanted to learn more about her character and world.

I can't say I'm a fan, mostly because Kotaku tends to steal my friends' gifs and other stuffs, but that's for other reasons.

Actually I can't stress enough how superior the English dub in this game is to the original Japanese.

Talk about flavor text. The characters just feel more expressive in English.
