NEW TRAILER: State of Play May 2019

Hello all. Long time lurker, first time poster. I just wanted to comment on a thought I had while watching the analysis video (which was quite nice to watch, by the way).

I have a theory on where the Jessie close up takes place. It's neither at Sector 8 nor Sector 1, and it isn't during the Sector 5 raid either. I believe this location is, in fact, the Sector 7 slum station.

I know, I know, it doesn't look anything like the simple rundown platform of the original game, but I think that is sort of the point. As to why the crew are jumping turnstiles and running, if my guess is correct its when Barret tells them all to split and head for base. Which means Jessie's "Have fun", if it wasn't created specifically for the trailer is, in context, her teasing Cloud about his impending return to Tifa. Which also means they are presenting Jessie's character from a different angle (hiding her own feelings behind the teasing) or dropping her interest in him all together in favor of something else.
Welcome! :)

The problem with this very specific interpretation is that in the Japanese trailer she’s says something different: iirc she’s saying “thanks for everything!” So I’m not sure it would chime with your take on it here.

Edit: it’s “thanks for your hard work!” Which I guess could mean it’s set after the Sector 1 mission is complete. But I think the reference to Tifa and her own feelings is maybe a bit off.

Thanks for joining the convo! Hope to hear more from you soon!

The point you bring up about the shots being created specifically for the trailer is something we haven’t touched much on, but the disclaimer of “development footage” puts anything we’ve seen under the same scrutiny.

As for the turnstiles being the Sector 7 slums, that’s possible! “Have fun” might be a reference to Barret’s order to split up. Sector 7 is your first proper exploration locale, so perhaps it’s encouraging you to go out and explore, chat with folks, etc.

Actually, it not being run down does make a lot of sense. I know Midgar is based mainly on a combination of NYC and Tokyo, but if you want to talk utter desolation and slum life, you need to look at Detroit, where I come from. The transition between really nice places like Grosse Point and Wayne State are directly adjacent to dangerous places like the Cass Coridor.

In that cut of the city, entire houses are just completely abandoned or about to fall apart regardless of whose living there. I lived in one of those houses for half a year.

We know that business men are commuting up from the slums to the plate in order to work. I can't imagine that such a person who uses those trains would take one that goes INTO the slums and then up again if he was already a plate resident. There has to be a train line that runs around the actual city without ever going bellow the plate, or you'd have a lot of wasted time for passengers that are obviously more important than slum dwellers. Nah, there's likely a lot of people living in a somewhat stabilized area near the core pillar where it's exceptionally cheap. Then the further and further out you go, the more trashy and uninhabitable the slums get.

Fair enough about Tifa, though now that I know what the Japanese translates to, I'm more convinced this is the Sector 7 station.

I like your theory, FFShinra. Your implied allegiances are also relevant to my interests.

I have always found the Shinra Company the more fascinating villain compared to Sephiroth (apart from his fall from grace during the Nibelheim Incident), as his characterization (probably because you don't actually meet him again til the end of the game) falls flat to me. Something I hope the remake expands and fixes.

I fully admit that once Disc 2 ends, my interest in the overall plot wanes considerably (this also being when the sidequests fully open up doesn't help either) to the point where I rarely bother to beat the game proper.

It's a clever theory. I like it, purely because it adds a bit more nuance to the canon. And it fits with the idea of serious expansion, from the characters on up.

I just hope I'm right and hope that if I am, that this is a sign for things to come on every aspect of FF7.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more I think this interpretation of her comment is correct.

The transition between really nice places like Grosse Point are directly adjacent to dangerous places like the Cass Coridor that splits between GP and the Wayne State campus, which is also relatively nice.

Makes me wonder if the train graveyard will still be right next to the station or further away, exactly for this reasoning.

Welcome twice! You’re a disembodied mass of typed words after my own heart.

Re: the length of this opus, there's something that has been bothering me: if the first part is Midgard-only, wouldn't that mean that we don't get to see Yuffie and Vincent? I was thinking about how long the first part should be, and thinking about those two, shouldn't that mean that we get to see other stuff than Midgard? It would be tough to get them only in part 2...

If the first part is Midgar only, you can extend that to Cait Sith and Cid too, no? Not to mention Red XIII will presumably not have much screen time.

In theatre, it’s improper to introduce main characters before the intermission. Already I am thinking of exceptions (The Crucible springs to mind) but we can’t really expect this game to introduce Cid to us.

I’m perfectly fine with keeping Yuffie, Cid, Cait Sith, and Sephiroth gated behind Part 2 and beyond.

Before? Don't you mean after? Or am I being totally dense and theater-illiterate?

@FFShinra Welcome to this Motley Crew! I'm working on my own analysis video and have my own thoughts about the Jessie scene.

While your theory and further thoughts of the others here sound interesting, I have to object. While a full station building would be nice for the sector 7 slums, it would be a betrayal to the original design. Furthermore, if you look closely at the background, you can see some stairs leading upwards. Where do they lead to if not the upper part of North Edge station at the start of the game? Also, I can't see them changing the building-less sector 7 slum train station into multi-storied, clean building. The slums are crap holes. Nothing is completely untouched, clean and functional like it is portrayed in the trailer.

Edit: @Lex, @ForceStealer Thumbs up for your analysis video! It was very enjoyable. And you're the first ones noticing and commenting on those weird wave form icons on the status UI. I noticed them very early on and also have a theory ready in my own analysis. I really hope I manage to get both parts out before June 9th...

I acknowledged that it wouldn't be the exact same, but that also seems to be what SE is going for in this instance. As to the size of the station, we don't know if it is indeed any bigger than what we see in the trailer, which is a turnstile and some stairs. But even if it is, it might be because it serves the entire sector.

Rough parts of town even in the real world can still have clean stations (even if they are not extravagant). And even then, the slight flicker in the lights of the sign might suggest its not as well kept up as it possibly should be in a place like the upper plate.

As to the stair case, I don't think it can be assumed that the stair = North Edge Station. I don't think I've met a subway station without a stairwell unless it was a plain platform. Usually because its either elevated or underground. Even at level, the rail may not be. Which isn't to say North Point is discounted for that reason, but it's not an exclusive thing either.

@FFShinra Fair points. Though I still think it's highly unlikely that what we see in the trailer is the sector 7 train station, mostly because it would be an extreme departure from the original design.
