I don't think the recasting thing has anything to do with unions. They managed to get union actors in World of Final Fantasy and Dissidia NT which would have been worked on during the strike. If anything I think it's more likely Square Enix being cheap. With XIV they moved their voice acting over to England, which could be a design choice except they already started with the LA video game voice acting lot and therefore everyone's voices got changed--and that was before the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Though I'm not totally sure of that. Square Enix don't tend to be cheap with their main titles. FFXV didn't seem to be. Maybe the likes of Burton and Newbern would be more expensive with the amounts of voice acting in the remake, so they decided to go with a completely clean slate on the casting. It's just weird when other recently released FF titles have used their voices.

I've been thinking they could be planning on making an entirely new compilation. If this is true, they may move to a new, younger cast in order to future-proof the sound. If they spread it all out over another 10-20 years, they'll want younger voices.

Are we absolutely sure that the voices of the remake have been recast and not been directed so much better/different than before?

Not only that, but while I am thinking that what Steve Burton meant on his twitter account two years ago by reprising his role as Cloud for the Remake was mainly for the FFVII(and it's Remake) scenarios for Mobius Final Fantasy, it doesn't make sense that he'd say that and Square left it, and then all of the sudden they just brought up Cloud's new voice actor out of the blue just like that and we have to wait until next month for either one or both to confirm the entire recast.

Plus, up until now, Cloud's english voice was never recast in all the years Steve's been playing the role from KH1 all the way to Dissidia NT(and hopefully the upcoming new DLC cutscenes for the same game if they include new ones during the main game or have him hopefully reprise his role for the possible sequel, and if they include Tifa's return and/or Ardyn's introduction).

I have a feeling that you're right. Plus, as I said earlier: for the English Cast-Out with the old, in the new. But....if they're planning an entirely new Compilation(which I find sucks, but that's just me as I prefer the current Compilation), why recast the English voices while keeping the old Japanese cast?

To be real, that's a point against my argument. It may, in fact, point to a union dispute of some such thing. If they keep the Japanese VAs, I don't know why they'd change it for English.

Money issues for the English, maybe? Or maybe they decided to do the approach in replacements since most remakes in English have new actors and/or voice actors and decide to not have the newer fans know about the older generations until they find out themselves. Which is stupid, considering how they just unexpected kicked Steve Burton out of the job of voicing Cloud after he confirmed his return(I know I said this a million times by now, but still...) back in 2017 which hasn't been that long.

I don't know what to think about the voice changes... I mean, the new voices are really good, but I prefer most of the old voices more. Especially Sephiroth and Cloud. This could just be because I am so used to their voices in Advent Children, because I have watched Advent Children so many times. Red, however, should never sound like Advent Children Red again. And Aerith sounds amazing in the trailer. I hope they don't change Vincent's voice from Advent Children, though... I thought that voice was hot... I mean really good. Yeah, really good.

More than pleased over here if not a single Advent Children voice makes it into the remake <3
Kinda agree. I didn’t mind them but they aren’t great by any means. The remake trailer 2019 voices actually sound great. Cloud has expressiveness!

I would put money down that they don't get someone who could do better job with Barret than Beau Billingslea.

I literally don't even remember his voice from AC so I suppose that means it was generally OK. All the bad ones (and particularly, bad lines) still stick out in my head and make me cringe. It's my own fault for watching it over and over again before it was released in English, I completely ruined their voices forever.

I'm really not sure how some are saying they don't remember these voice actors for the FFVII crew because it's not as if they've only been in AC...

These were the voices for all depictions of Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, etc that have existed since 2005. Kingdom Hearts, Dissidia, all Compilation of FFVII games, Super Smash Bros, World of Final Fantasy, etc etc....

If you were playing any localized game with "Cloud," "Sephiroth" or anyone else, then chances are you were hearing Burton, Newburn, etc doing the voice. That's 14 years of the same consistent voices for characters which is a long ass time in a voice acting carrier.

When Veronica Taylor ceased being Ash Ketchum due to the change over of Pokemon going from 4kids to the "Pokemon Company" people were jarred and pissed. Because that was Ash's voice.

I certainly don't see how their voices are interchangeable and not that big a deal. Not when they've been consistent for almost a decade and a half.

But what about Lance Bass and Mena Suvari and Mandy Moore? Big names that appeared once but were tossed. Presumably when their asking fee got above the company’s allowance. For a company whose big-dollar-actors failed to deliver the cash on Spirits Within, it stands to reason that they would be shrewd negotiators.

Well I hope the VAs were told by their agents, and that they didn’t find out by watching the trailer. That would suck!

Yeah. That's probably what happened with Hayden Panettiere who wasn't asked to reprise her role as Kairi and she'd been unaware that she'd been replaced by Xion's voice actress, which sucked as well. Hayden will always be Kairi for me.

Right, and let's not forget Zack despite Rick Gormez only voicing him four/five times in general(AC and ACC for the new added scenes), Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep and recently World of Final Fantasy port for Nintendo Switch/Xbox One.

And I'm one of those Pokemon fans who was furious over Ash's voice change because Veronica Taylor will always be Ash. Not Sarah Natochenny(because even now she's still terrible as Ash).

Maybe Lance Bass wasn't the right choice for Sephiroth or maybe he decided he didn't like voicing/acting a villain and decided to go on playing Superman(which I've never been a fan of). And while I loved Mena Suvari as Aerith, maybe she and Mandy Moore(who I think was the worst Aerith in KH1) weren't that likeable and decided for Adrea Bowen instead if the latter's back as Aerith in remake.

I find it really problematic when big (or big-ish) Hollywood names are used as VA's in games because they're generally used as a "draw" to the game rather than their ability to effectively VA for the character. There are notable exceptions, like Freddie Prinze Jnr., Martin Sheen and Seth Green in Mass Effect/ Dragon Age, but Bioware spend a lot of their effort on VA and often structure the characters around the actors in the development process. This isn't really something you can do with FFVII characters since they're fairly well established. This is without considering the other issues, like availability for sequels and add-on content (additional voice recording).

I want Rufus to have an upper-class English accent and I want President Shinra to have a muck-and-brass northern Victorian industrialist eh-by-gum accent, in the great tradition of making all the baddies be British. If Reno could be Irish on top of that, and Rude from East London, it would make my day. Just saying.

I would actually really like that.
