I'm not, PC master race and shit :monster:

There was a disclaimer somewhere saying that the images on there were simulated, so whether or not the game will be on there is yet to be determined. It probably will be though, hardware has advanced enough in the past five years that it should run comfortably on there, especially if they give it a proper amount of memory. Which shouldn't be a problem, it looks like it can be built with mostly off-the-shelf mobile hardware, of which there is a lot these days. Back with the Gameboy and probably the 3DS, Nintendo still had to design their own hardware (chips and shit). Not anymoar. Same with Sony in the ps4.

I think the best part about this whole announcement is how much of a clean break it seems to be from the marketing style of yesteryear Nintendo. People love Directs but there's so many elements to this trailer that explain their commitments so much more succinctly than any Miyamoto or Iwata or Fils-Aime standing in a blank background explaining shit off a script.

The fact that it dedicates a sizeable portion of the announcement video to a concept of Skyrim on-the-go is especially significant on multiple levels as to where their priorities lie. It's a statement that the console is no slouch in terms of power especially for a portable system and even as a home console. The placement of it at the forefront barely after the BotW concept is a message that the Western market is a serious target for them.
Most of all, it's a claim to a commitment to more third-party, big-budget, triple-A (Western) support that extends far beyond what they've been doing in their safe space for years, past obligatory Capcom and Ubisoft releases.

It's a seriously promising announcement because not only does it really effectively communicate that this is the new shit, it communicates that they understand the primary shortfalls of their previous philosphy as a console producer and publisher.

That said, the WiiU had big Western third-party titles at its launch that conveyed a similar sense of commitment to third-party and we all know were that ended up

I'm not sure I agree or maybe I just misunderstand your point =/

But being able to play Skyrim is not a huge accomplishment. I'm sure PSVita could have done it as well. I mean the freaking PS3 could "Play" Skyrim, and that thing has like 512mb of Ram. Half of which is IIRC Reserved for OS, so realistically they got that to play on 256 lol.

Idk. I see Skyrim and I think of an old game with really bad default textures, stiff/nonexistant animations and a game built around being able to work sub 1gb ram limitations.

Even if its the remastered version that doesn't really impress considering it doesn't look all that much better and it's only big selling point is that its no longer restrained by being a game built around 32bit architecture and can use a more relevant version of DX.
I mean the remastered versions graphics are still limited by the outdated at release specs of the current console generation.

So tl;dr I have no clue how showing Skyrim showcases it isn't slouching in the power department. To me it actually kinda does make me feel worried. IDK.

edit:

Also for what its worth, Nintendo did the same thing with the Wii U and Dark Siders at its announcement and then went on to state many 3rd party devs were on board to get AAA titles on the platform. We all know how that went.

Just like the Wii was a slightly more powerful Gamecube I expect this to be only slightly more powerful than the Wii U.

Enjoy your 720p games :awesome:

IDK, the Tegra series can do some pretty good graphics. They might even switch between real HD and upscaled depending on whether the thing is connected to the dock (= has moar power). I can't find a good benchmark for the Tegra compared to what's in the competitors' machines though. But, the competitors are consoles, this is a mobile device, so it won't be as powerful.

sell a disk reader as an extra :monster:

oh wait, then you would need to account for the gimmicky controls the motion sensors of the previous consoles

can you plug those in somewhere on that tiny slidey box

The detachable "joycons" might be motion sensitive and could be used as a Wiimote and nun-chuck, but that seems unlikely.

I wish Nintendo had kept the same cartridge size across the (3)DS and Switch, but the new ones look longer and narrower.

There's a theory floating around the graphics that suggests they'll aim for HD power while docked and downclock the GPU significantly in portable mode. I think an upscaler would probably be the less expensive option on multiple levels, though.

You probably already know this, but Skyrim was not the best-performing game on any console upon release (and didn't perform all that well on the PS3), especially under load. Given optimization I suppose it could have worked on the Vita as well ie. a playable standard at best? Even though it's ugly as sin, it was a technically demanding game for rigs that want to play it at its best quality and I'd personally rate last-generation console versions as passable as best.

I'd be happy for a better-optimised play experience compared to that of the 360 and PS3, especially if it was capable of doing so on a handheld.

Also need to note that this is looking to have the highest-resolution screen we've seen in a dedicated portable console so far, judging from its bullshots, at least greater than the 544p of the Vita or (god forbid) the 240p screens on the 3DS.
At face value it's not an amazing accomplishment, no, but I think it's more complicated than that (not to mention the other aspects of the announcement I mentioned). I mean, people used Crysis as a benchmark for games long after it looked graphically impressive by more modern standards.

Only because it was a 32-bit game and could at max draw from 4gb Ram on PC's. And even then at the time the only way Skyrim was gonna crap out a rig was if you swapped out all of the default/"HD" textures for ones on Nexus, and started tinkering with an ENB among other things. I don't recall Vanilla Skyrim ever being a big deal graphically on PC. I mean the majority of the textures (environmental and 3D models), environmental physics and default ENB were replaceable with actual HD content with in the first like 2 weeks tops.
Like yeah for console at that time period it was a pretty game, but otherwise if you cranked it all the way up on PC it was actually not that great.

Regarding PS3. That's why I put Playable in quotes lol. Even then though look at this generation there tons of AAA first and third party games that don't even attempt to do a stable 30fps. Sure that's pretty far removed from the slideshow PS3 Skyrim became but it's still a testament that the game fricking ran on 512mb ram tops and some seriously outdated GPU at that time.

I dont know. I just don't understand how a game that was by all means Standard Definition in it's Vanilla release, was built around running on a console that has specs arguably worse than some Tablets out today, has completely outdated textures and animations by todays standards , is somehow an indication that this game has some power under its hood.

At least when they announced the Wii U and showed off Darksiders 2 on it they were showing off a good looking game that was coming out that year, not a 5 year old game lol.
