Orphan Black was the best show currently on television and why haven't you watched it yet?

So!

First of all - is Tatiana Maslany fucking amazing or what?!
Also, I want to know what things blew your mind in the first season.

Secondly:

Fucking Helena's invincible, and I love her crazy, impossibly polite face. I hope that she's gonna eat all the jello in the hospital, and go rescue Kira from the Proletheans, since she's the one clone who has any chance of being able to passively get into their ranks.

It's getting pretty apparent that Kira & Helena's extreme durability and improved healing capabilities are what the Dyad is working towards, and Katja & Cosima's respiratory condition is a negative possible mutation from that engineering. It also makes sense why our other dead clones who've been shown were hit by a train and shot through the skull so as not to give them any chance of coming back.

Also, I'm getting a lot more confident in the theory that Delphine was the handler for the French clone, Danielle Fournier who got assassinated before the start of the show. Delphine's "recent breakup" story would explain why she was always sad around Cosima at first, and would also explain why Cosima's relationship with her would initially have been difficult - especially if Delphine had a different relationship with Danielle (she'd never been with a girl before).

It would probably be easier to list what didn't blow my mind in the first season. I'll have to go through a list of plot summaries after work to pick out particular highlights. The fact that Maslany wasn't even nominated for an Emmy (she honestly deserved to win both best supporting and best starring actress) is a travesty of the highest order.

Helena and Kira's durability is almost certainly what the Neolutionists were working towards with the clone project, yes. I also wouldn't be surprised if Helena's character arc involves exactly what you speculated.

From episode 3 onwards is where everything gets utterly AMAZING. I know you'll love it.

Yeah I got the feeling it was building to something pretty damn amazing. It's running on BBC iplayer right now so I'm a week between episodes, I hate being drip fed tv, but 'tis life ya. I've been waiting for a cool new series to catch my attention so now I'm all like :excited:

How come all telivised cool yet impoverished people have these very cool studio factory type flats? I'm cool yet impoverished and all I can afford is a double room in a shared house.... in Swansea! Maybe I need to do some art :muhaha:

How many episodes of Season 1 does the iPlayer have available?

Well, arthouse-style flats in semi-shady areas like Felix's aren't exceptionally expensive, but they're not at all cheap either. I also wouldn't say that Fe is impoverished by a long shot: he's frequently in really well-made clothes, not to mention in addition to probably selling his art, we've occasionally see him sleep with people for money, so while he doesn't have a proper job per-se, but he's far from being poor.

oh fuck me there are 4 there! Ok I know what I'm doing now. Note to self, iplayer does weird shit with numbers!

I wasn't sure about Fe because he looks like someone who has a lot of stuff but no real cash on a regular basis, plus I was going on the first ep where Sarah is painted as poor and applied it to Fe. I should just suspend my disbelief and get on with it huh? ><

I had somehow missed this reply. :O

Completely agreed, but it did win the Critic's Choice Award for "Best Television Drama" in 2013, and beat out Breaking Bad which doesn't make up for it, but is a pretty big victory. If it doesn't get something this year, there'll be riots in the streets. (I love when people joke that she should be nominated for Best Actress, Supporting Actress, & Ensemble all for Orphan Black). It's JUST. SO. GOOD.

the fact that you can tell when she's Helena as Sarah, or Allison as Sarah, or Sarah as Cosima, or Sarah as Allison because of the layered nuances to her performances is nothing short of jaw-dropping. My favorite tumblr quote from the latest episode was,

"Sarah as Cosima didn’t even look like Cosima and I will never
understand that because they are literally the same person."

Also, Felix's actor, Jordan Gavaris isn't British. He changes his vocabulary and maintains it the whole day from read throughs, rehearsals, & takes, and then drops it only when they're totally done for the day, and has totally fooled a number of his co-stars with it, which is nothing short of impressive, because many of them are from the UK.

OMG I'm up to ep 8 and to-ho-tally addicted to this series! I've even started rambling about it to my students, which is totally inappropriate... until I find one that has seen it! :D

I really liked Dark Angel long time back, but this show totally dates Dark Angel on all fronts (character depth, general script writing, etc). I know there are some series' which are timeless, but TV has really come a long way hasn't it? I kinda feel like they're doing it pretty much right these days, whereas in the past you would have to turn a blind eye to a lot.

Mind you: a Brit would say 'shite' in a heat of the moment threatening way, a sex worker wouldn't take the money after sex and that is not how you get into private underground clubs - just sayin. :monster:

Oh man, episode 8 has one HELL of an ending, too. I'd totally forgotten about Dark Angel, but I used to watch that series back when. I really do just love everything about what they do with Orphan Black. (You do make good little observations though). ;)

Just watched 8 & 10 - I'm guessing that was the series finale. I'm pretty much in love with everything about the show too, despite pointing out the very rare inconsistency, and I only pick up on stuff I know about and I could well be wrong given I've never been to America.

For all I know an ex-pat may well with to stay true to their country's quirks and over use them/use them inappropriately. I know I wouldn't really say 'duw duw' outside Wales but used to when I first started travelling. (It means 'good god' in Welsh - lit. god god). And every sex worker has their own codes of conduct, although the money first thing is rarely broken for reasons of basic protection. But each to their own eh. End of the day, it's all very believable.

My head is kinda spinning out now about which way they're going to take this. They've tied up so many loose ends rather neatly but then opened up so many more. If I ever get married I'd like it to be to a sci-fi writer because their brains are pretty damn cool.

So what's with Delphine's loyalties anyway? If she were truly loyal to the Dyad I can't see why she would have revealed that the clones were their property, but if she were truly loyal to Cosima she wouldn't have dropped off that blood (unless it's a fake sample, I guess). What do people think is going on here?

I'm probably going to let a backlog of eps build up then watch them all in the one go.

I think that she's doing whatever she can to keep both sides placated towards each other. If she was, in fact, Danielle Fournier's monitor like I suspect. She not only knows enough about the Dyad to know what can be done for her, but probably knows that they might not always be the good guys in the scenario. She's already done something similar when she reported all the other clones, but left out Kira - despite the fact that I'm 99.9% certain that she knows what Kira meant to their project. At this point I feel like she's going to do whatever it takes to keep Cosima safe/alive/healthy, even if Cosima or the Dyad don't directly approve of how she goes about it. To me Delphine is always loyal to everyone and no one, but especially if she already went through Danielle's death (again speculative but with some decent hints) I don't think she'd be able to deal with losing Cosima, even moreso than just because of their current relationship.

Watching new shows as they air has inured me to cliffhangers. Lost, FlashForward (which never even got a resolution), Scandal, The Blacklist, and (recently) Agents of SHIELD have been particularly good for this.

Well, didn't see... most of those plot twists coming. This show knows how to keep you on your toes.

I'm still not sure whom we can trust here.

I'm kind of glad they resolved the Kira being kidnapped plot so quickly, I feel like other shows would have dragged it out over more of the season. And wow, Mrs. S don't mess around. She played dumb about the photo, so I'm wondering where her loyalties lie/what her agenda is. One thing I don't really get about the first season is why she allowed Sarah to be in contact with her biological mother at all if there was the risk Sarah would find something out?

Also, haha, oh man, I thought Donnie was going to be some sort of mastermind, what with the being in direct contact with Leekie (when Paul hadn't been) and the not cracking under hot glue gun torture but I guess he's not the only competent monitor after all. :monster:
