I think it's fair to say that the podcast process hasn't been working recently. The most recent retrospective episode went up in April; the most recent regular episode went up in January. You can see the full list of episodes
here.
A few of us just had a brief, unplanned chat about the situation on Discord voice chat, and a few points came up which should be discussed here. Let me first say that I'm not interested in apportioning blame, just improving things.
I understand that a few episodes have been recorded but not yet published. Are they relevant any more? If they're retrospective episodes, they can obviously go up whenever, but the Final Fantasy XV review episode should probably be scrapped. Publishing it now would be somewhat embarrassing, I think. If the people who recorded it still want it to be heard then it could be posted on the forum but not necessarily the front page.
It goes without saying that the host and editor are the two most important people in getting podcasts organised and published. Vader, you did a great job of hosting for a long time and it's unfortunate you can't do on a regular basis any more. Ryu, you picked up the slack, which I'm grateful for, but there wasn't really a discussion about it (please correct me if I'm wrong). Tenny, you've been editing podcasts for us, but there's a bit of a backlog now, so I'm not sure how you feel about it. If you have other commitments, that's understandable, just let us know so we can figure something out, including bringing another person in if needs be.
I'm thinking it might be a good idea to have separate hosts and editors for the two podcast series – our regular episodes and the retrospective. Perhaps Vader/Ryu and Tenny could stay as the team for the retrospective and we could get another pair for the regular episodes to share the load.
Ahem. I'd be happy to do either job myself, but not both. I'll probably be the guy cracking the whip to make sure episodes get recorded on a regular basis, say twice a month, and making sure they get published within a day or two of being recorded, but that doesn't mean I have to host. I'd really like to hear some suggestions for that role. In my opinion – and in my experience of listening to podcasts – the host needs to be friendly and knowledgeable but with the ability to take a back seat and let their guests have the limelight. Often the host is the person who speaks the least on a podcast. They also need to be able to gently but firmly guide the conversation and prevent it from sprawling out of control, and of course, they should have a pleasant voice. If you think you or someone you've spoken to on TLS fits the bill, please drop their name in this thread.
We'll sort out who actually wants the role and who's available to do it later.
I'm not trying to tread on anyone's toes here, but I'll understand if those of you who have been working on the podcast up to now take issue with me suddenly coming in and shaking things up. Hopefully we can at least agree that they
do need shaking up. I feel it's part of my job here on TLS to handle that.
