When I think about it, I really don't know what I would like best. I feel as if the company is in the UK Prime Minister's situation on this, with the Euro Skeptics on one hand not approving of him, and the Eurocrats not applauding him either. It boils down to the company deciding to either do something or not, but at the same time I rather not see a new, pretty patch to place into the story of FFVII further for clarification purposes or to synthetically extrapolate from what the original holds (Tsviets! :arr:).

Okay, admittedly I'd like to see where the WRO goes from DoC, yes, definitely, but that's about it really when it comes to fleshing out their own concoctions. The historic patches are okay, but I feel as if they also take from the mystery in FFVII. I'd really like to see some linkage on the Neo Midgar to bear fruition seeing President Shinra mentioned it (original history to pull strings with, perfect), specially seeing it would pry nicely from the past to the present event, I think.

Yeah, I'm not even so sure about that. :nah:

If I can make a request to SE regarding FFVII.. I wouldn't choose a remake or a reboot. I want them to uncanonize Crisis Core and Dirge. And everything wrong with the fucking Compilation. And that includes Genesis.

Yeah I know, unpopular opinion. I am having a bad day.

it's a popular and wise opinion tbh

toss advent children in there while you're at it. having a sequel to the game with the most thought provoking, interpretative ending was a moronic move from the get go.

but I'd say the man with severe memory problems

Cloud doesn't have any general memory problems, he erased Zack from his mind and put himself in his shoes for a very specific reason, other then that he remembers everything clearly, right down to every conversation Zack had with Sephiroth in his presence or absence and the face of the Makonoid that only Zack and Sephiroth ever got a look at.

I'd leave it out of a remake, just show Cloud telling that particular part of the backstory in Kalm, maybe Barret interrupts him as he had tendency to do and have Cloud pick up after they'd gone back to Nibelheim or something but if there's ever a sequel, Cloud should know all about Genesis.

I would only have Angeal be in there and tweek his personality a bit in the story.I can defiantly see him serving a purpose in the reboot. But that is just my opinion but I think I could tolerate Angeal if they tweeked him around a bit.

I also think that they should probably get rid of Grimoire Valentine and just put in Gast because the thing that has been daunting me is that it was said that Lucrecia was Gast's assitant but yet she wasn't shown working with him in Dirge of Cerebrus so I think Grimoire is an unnessary addition and that Gast should be more expanded upon.

But none of this would be in FF7 anyway.

Speaking of Makonoids, its weird that you didn't ever fight one during FFVII. I'd like to see that included in a remake, but not how they were in Crisis Core. Just on a return visit to Nibelheim or something. Like an easter egg.

How were they in Crisis Core? I don't remember. I remember that they were in there, but that's all...

I don't see why people are convinced a remake of FFVII would be worse than the original. They remade FFI, II, III, and IV and all of them were better than the original, mostly do to bonus content. I think that's likely all they'd do if they were to remake it, besides having a better translated script and better graphics, and maybe voice acting too, though I'd count voice acting as bonus content. And I'd be perfectly fine with that, though I do agree we need a new compilation entry before a remake. I think some people here are just too cynical.

Weren't the Makonoids in CC part of the outcome of the making of the Genesis army or something? And/or you fought them during some of the extra missions you could go on?

Vague memories...aaaaaa brain is trying

You fight the Makanoids in the final dungeon when you go and examine these thingamajigs in that one lake room and if you defeat them all you get to go to this creepy prison-y place that eventually leads to the king behemoth in that one cell block with the loveless tablet in it.

I don't think it's Square's remake capabilities people are doubting so much as their ability to remake FFVII, mostly because the Compilation has shown that the people currently in charge of the canon...well, they treat it like a Rubik's cube, but instead of solving the Rubik's cube, they just glue other Rubik's cubes over the unsolved sides and hope we won't notice.

Assuming SE could pull off a remake or a reboot of equal quality, I'd prefer a remake. I'd prefer whatever option would give me less Genesis, really. :)

it's not about being cynical. it's more, "once burned, twice shy". they've proved through the compilation they have little to no care for the original lore, little idea of how to direct in a manner that kept in line with the feeling of the original (jpop blasting over emotional moments, thanks for that) and no understanding of the original characters. literally everyone has just become a sad parody of what they were.

just. they've proven that at this point that they don't know what they're doing with this verse anymore. and they added so much to the canon that it's incredibly unlikely they'd leave well enough alone.

it's like if someone borrowed your favorite book and brought it back with torn pages and food stains and broken binding, then tried to convince you they could restore it. i don't care if you're a goddamn wizard, man, i don't trust you anymore.

Ugh I had almost forgotten that. I actually enjoyed Crisis Core quite a bit, Genesis notwithstanding, and the end of it, the way they work the game mechanics into it, it's so well-done and it's fucking heartbreaking and I was bawling like a little bitch and

then that fucking song started.

I don't even hate the song but goddamn how do you fuck up that bad, SE. Did everyone involved in the scenario planning take a blow to the head at the exact same moment? Uuuuuugh.

i just remember how unsettled i felt when we got the original scene in the game.

no music. no nothing. just cloud over zack's body shaking uncontrollably. shit hit me hard.

That's one thing I think the Compilation consistently fails at, is sound choices. The original game is so thoughtful with music - and lack thereof. I can think of tons of places where the sounds in the original game made a big impact on me (Aeris's death is the most obvious but there are so many more). I can't think of any from the Compilation, even though a lot of the music was the same. Advent Children has some okay moments, but nothing even approaching original game territory.

Unlucky

I think a big reason why the Compilation titles suck to the bone is because SE always opts to create a 'save teh world' kind of story line. The world didn't need saving all the time, seriously that shit is getting old. There's sufficient plot lines in the original story yet to be explored, and they cast it aside in favor of some new, lame 'crisis'.

it's a popular and wise opinion tbh

Alright, somebody get Nojima/ Kitase on the phone :desu:

I'm fairly tolerant of AC compared to the other titles.. but yeah, it fucked up too.

And let's not forget BC.

While the scale of the threat in CC was still too big, it wasn't planet-threatening either. I was glad they didn't go that route with it.

BC's dumb all around, but I can't remember if the fate of the world was at stake or not. Been awhile since I read up on it.

It was, yeah. Or at least the fate of humanity. Zirconiade would have literally burned everyone alive to a crisp.

CC seemed to be leaning toward going that route as well, what with Genesis talking about everyone returning to the Lifestream before Zack kicked his ass.

Yeah. Fuhito was planning to use it to 'cleanse the world' if I'm not mistaken.

Also this. But then we're supposed to feel sorry for him in the end because all he ever wanted was to live and be a hero. So noble.

Thats why I didn't like him because they tried to make him sympathetic but all it did but showed him to be a self centered, glory hound. Not to mention they kinda of shrug off his atrocities in the end.He does a lot of things that Sephiroth does but is thinly excused by his want to live and his so called SOLDIER's honor.

No, they didn't. Where is everyone getting this? At no point did I sympathize (or feel compelled to sympathize) with Genesis. Zack didn't kill him when he had him at his mercy, but that's because he's Zack. What does that have to do with me?

And Genesis mentioned everyone returning to the Lifestream, but at no point did he exhibit a plan to do so or the ability to pull it off. He turned into a big monster and all, but Zack defeated it by himself, I don't think he could have posed any threat to the Planet at large. Dude was crazy, that's all.

I'm pretty much content with the original but I do want remake of cutscenes, they already made ACC I don't think the total cutscenes in FFVII will amount to an hour. It's the same with other games, at least I want high res 3D art of Rinoa dammit.

Is there another reason for a remake/reboot other than; "Look how pretty Cloud is" ? If so, then sure, let's have one.

A remake would be difficult for them, since they will most likely have to incorporate ALL the new content (add Genesis, DeepGround and the other Turks in along with all the other crap the compilation dumped on us).
But with a reboot, you would risk the fan base reaction of "That ain't my Cloud/game/childhood/where-are-the-spelling-errors etc"
Something tells me they will somehow try to incorporate the Loveless poem into the game because they are proud of it or something.

I wander if Square-Enix know that they've messed up the compilation with ya'know the compilation and that's why they are saying no to a remake/reboot until they make a new title that is as successful as 7 was. Although that kind of sounds like they know that they know they won't ever be successful, which is a bit pessimistic.

Genesis - sealed beneath Midgar, erased from historical record.

Deepground - highly classified (only 3 people even know it exists) - sealed underground.

New Turks - MIA/in hiding

Run it by me again why they would have to incorporate all this? Or indeed even HOW they would?

Yeah, it's embarrassing for them to openly admit they aren't as good at making games as they used to be. Of course, it's refreshing and gratifying to see them acknowledge reality, but I almost want to tell them, "If you're going to make crap, stand by your crap."

I suppose it's better than listening to them drone on about their games being flawless and westerners just not getting it, though.

No, they didn't. Where is everyone getting this? At no point did I sympathize (or feel compelled to sympathize) with Genesis. Zack didn't kill him when he had him at his mercy, but that's because he's Zack. What does that have to do with me?

Whether one accepts Zack as their POV character or no, for Genesis to be spared after everything he did creates a question of "Why?" (insert JayM, Zee and Force's favorite song here :awesome:).

Now, the real reason, of course, is that he's already been shown alive in a chronologically subsequent title. But from the perspective of the narrative, Zack could have tried to put him down with the same ruthless efficiency that he euthanized Hollander, thought he succeeded while Genesis actually escaped, etc. But they didn't go that route. They hammer home that Zack feels sorry for this guy and wants to save him, even to the point of tracking him halfway across the world, soundly trouncing him, and then walking away, leaving him free to start up his same old shenanigans on the off-chance he's changed.

It's pretty stupid.

But, then, you see this kind of nonsense a lot in Japanese fiction. Vash's final showdown with Knives in "Trigun" springs to mind. There's this sense when the hero confronts his ideological nemesis that "victory will prove which of us was right."

Given all the chaos and death he had caused up to that point, Genesis expressing a desire to send everyone back to the Lifestream is itself threat enough of a plan. He didn't need a plan beyond "kill." His intent was enough, as when Sephiroth set out from the Mt. Nibel mako reactor with Jenova's head. Zack knew he had to be put down before he could get away.

Which makes him sparing Genesis all the more absurd.

Dunno maybe after being imprisoned by Shinra Zack kinda understood why Genesis became like that and offered sympathy. I don't think it can fully justify Zack sparing Genesis but that's a possible explanation.

Dammit, Tres. Now it's in my head.

But I think that plays to Zack's character (not being stupid, but him not killing Genesis). Genesis was part of the "Golden Three" that Zack looked up to, aspired to become. Not, of course, in the sense that they all went batshit, but Zack wanted to be the ideal SOLDIER, which is what he saw the three of them as in the beginning. They probably held a really high place of honor in Zack's mind, and this would conflict with the "obvious" answer that killing Genesis was the only route. He knew Genesis when he was still a SOLDIER, before everything went wrong. He probably hoped there was something of that left, and that in Zack defeating him, Genesis would realize that the answer was to return to SOLDIER honor.

My thoughts.
