I like beat takeshi's look but I'm not sure about batou (or maybe it's just that face he is making there) and also boma looks like he is wearing those plastic googly eyes

Also no mullet on togusa, worst adaptation ever

^Togusa looks like he has mullet. It just isn't bushy. Actor looks as old as Aramaki too :P.

Batou really needs the artificial eyes. I think it would work then. Doesn't look right otherwise.

Boma should shave his head :P.

The rest is tolerable.

Yeah, I think they need to rethink Boma's eyes. They should complement his skin or else it looks comical. I dunno, does that make me racist? But I'm happy with what they've done except Togusa is old as balls?! Wtf? Not happy. I just hope the other characters get a look in plot wise cos they don't really get much attention, and it's more important now that theyre more diverse, otherwise it's gonna look like tokenism.

Still think Scarlett makes a rubbish Major though :P

Remember these photos weren't officially released but leaked. Those could be placeholder shots for a more elaborate prop/CG.

For example, see this early test footage of Geordi's visor (and hair) on TNG:

maybe boma's eyes (and maybe other stuff) will be one of those things they add in later with cgi

edit; what force said, basically

I like the gritty look of those pictures. Would be interesting if the entire film was presented with some kinda of trippy filter for dramatic effect.
Doubt it will happen though - because Hollywood.

As for the casting. I don't know. The Japanese actors seem to really fit well, the other ones not so much.
I don't mind the ethnicity stuff as much as I just don't think Johanssen is a good actor, so I'd rather they had picked someone who can actually do the character justice - not just a big name with a pretty face to sell tickets.

@Force: Best comparison images ever for this. Thanks. I'm also of the opinion that Batou's eyes'll likely be CGI since with someone like Boma won't need to have the same level of facial expressive range as a character like Batou, so it makes sense that his could be a physical prop vs. needing to be CGI. (Also probably because of needing to be able to do stunts, etc.)

I'm curious about what about her acting gives you that impression, since I actually like that they cast her because of her acting capabilities for this role: (her physical capabilities from the MCU stuff as Black Widow, and her ability to present techno-speak from Her being the most outstanding things that come to mind immediately).

I'm curious about what about her acting gives you that impression,

Her acting in general obviously.
Her line delivery, her emotional expressions, her interpretations of roles, and her interactions with other actors in the films she performs in.

since I actually like that they cast her because of her acting capabilities for this role:

Well, what you like is not a metric for which to determine why they made the casting decision they did though - and unless you have some info I don't (which is perfectly possible mind you), there is nothing to say that they picked her specifically for her acting capabilities, and not for her ability to draw a crowd as a blockbuster actor.

(her physical capabilities from the MCU stuff as Black Widow, and her ability to present techno-speak from Her being the most outstanding things that come to mind immediately).

I'm simply not impressed by that, and it doesn't strike me as very relevant.
Whatever physical feats she did, if any of the noteworthy were even her at all, and not a stunt-woman, are not outside the domain of any average able-bodied woman given the training all actors inevitably receive before playing a movie like that.
This is not Jackie Chan level stuntman-ship.

As for her presenting techno-speak - what was so outstanding about it?
What about her techno-speak made you think that was a particular poignant recital of lines above and beyond any other average recital of techno-speak?

My biggest issue with Scarlett Johanssen is that I simply don't think she has the ability to act with the subtlety this particular role demands.
In this instance, which I think is apparent even by the teasers, she's far too expressive and animated for this particular role.
For the most part, Motoko has a face like a stone-wall, which is only brought to life at times through faint hints of expression.

Scarlett moving through the hallway with her gun raised looks stressed and unnerved - much too human - which is what I would expect from Scarlett because she simply isn't, IMO, an actor whose caliber is high enough to absorb the character.

I could be wrong though - she could be able, and simply denied a chance to do so due to bad directing.
That being said - these teasers did little to change my mind.
To me, she looks completely out of place, and she does not, in me, invoke the feeling of being an android.

Ok. To each their own, I guess. *shrugs*

I… never suggested that her casting was based on what I like about her, anymore than I suggested that she was chosen simply because you dislike her, or that she was chosen ONLY as a name and not also for her acting capabilities. I've been tl;dr that she's played roles in films with a similar skillset to what's required of The Major, in addition to having the name recognition needed to be able to fun a film because of the economics of cinema, because BOTH are likely relevant in why she's in the role. I brought up the former more so with you, because I'm pointing out why I personally like her in the role based on the films where she's done similar things.

PROBABLY the fact that I actually like all the various aspects of her action acting quite a bit in the MCU films, her performance as an AI in Her, and her portrayal of a cold non-human in Under The Skin, but you very clearly don't. I don't know what you really want here, dude.

And… That's fine, because that's your personal opinion (although she's a cyborg, not an android). We all have personal opinions on actors. I'm sure some people like Melissa McCarthy, but I don't. However, I don't need to just grill them about what's so great about her because I found all of her performances unimpressive and flat. I just accept that some people have different tastes for what they find, enjoyable, amusing, impressive, or noteworthy, and move on.

I really don't know what all your tl;dr at me is about, dude but it comes off as just a BIT condescending. If she bothers you that much, just don't see the movie, I guess? I'm just gonna leave it at that.

I, for one, am very much looking forward to this still after having seen the teasers & eagerly look forward to the arrival of a more complete trailer in the near future.

i like the look of the first and second one well enough, i thought the third one's set looked a bit underdressed (also like it was heading for a bit of a 'sweeps week lesbian kiss' moment). beat takeshi's clip looked like it might belong in a beat takeshi yakuza movie, and i thought scarjo looked a bit stiff and stilted in her walk in the last clip (maybe intentionally, i don't know)

i'm not sure if i would become interested in the film from seeing these clips if i didn't already know some of the source material (by which i mean the two mamoru oshii films , one book of the manga and part of the second before i couldn't get through it anymore, and 5 episodes of stand alone complex because i'm bad at watching tv series). the scene of scarjo-mokoto in bed pulling the wires out of her neck meant something to me because i can see parallel with oshii's first film. otherwise you just have like 6 seconds of a woman with wires in her neck.

It's funny because for clip #5 I've heard comments from people wishing her acting was a little more expressionless :monster:

But yo Takeshi Kitano is a fucking hardcore Aramaki holy shit

Out of all of them #2 feels the most like test footage. The composition and lighting that made the original film amazing is absent - in fact, the lighting in that clip seems really, really neutral, which makes all of that CGI look super flat and dull (especially the background). Also telling that it's the one clip out of all of them that lifts straight from the source to throw a bone to fans.

I like the direction of it, but I hope there's some more post-processing up until release!

Kinda makes you think how much actual info they give us in real trailers that isn't split up by text and movie/director info. :monster:

I think it is good that an original-ish story line is being thought of (I'm betting it'll be a mish-mash), because the anime, manga, and movies, were all products of their time. There are new social commentaries to be made :P.

Is it just me or is the masking of her being in front of a green screen laughably bad lol.

Not just you.

Of course, trailers etc often don't have all effects polished yet...but you'd think a simple rotoscoping job would look better even in a trailer.
