But then you're running into the territory of, do we care more about it looking like the anime, or looking like the Major spends a chunk of time styling her hair every day, since the look is more function than it is fashion for her character. – Especially when you're doing it as an actual haircut rather than a wig (which the film did). The tl;dr version is that it's one of those anime hairstyles that I don't think ever translates to actual human hair QUITE the way you think it will (coming from someone who's been doing some version of the Noctis/Sasuke/whatever look with my own hair since forever ago), so I'm probably more forgiving of this in particular.

As far as I'm concerned her hair can look as awesome as she wants, since presumably being a cyborg it wouldn't have the same exact properties of human hair. Obviously I'm getting into headcanon territory here but I figure it's the future, people can look however they want, without having to faff about in the bathroom every morning. I bet she doesn't shave her legs or armpits either, rather the hair just isn't there in the first place.

Props to ScarJo for having that inflicted upon herself though :monster:

I think something like Motokos hair is possible in real life (unlike say Rosso from Dirge of Cerberus) on human hair, but obviously the hair in question would have to be pretty thick to begin with.

In any case pretty much all the pictures you posted there are better than what they've done for the film. Even if they're not exact they still look sexy and not like a white supremacists GF growing out a skinhead :monster:

As for who I would cast as Motoko. It's bloody difficult. I'm not really that familiar with actresses these days. Charlize Theron perhaps? Or I googled 'amazonian actresses' and someone called Jamie Alexander cropped up. TBH both of them are a little more skinny than I would have hoped but that seems par for the course these days. But at least their faces look a little bit more....

I mean I don't want to be horrible about ScarJo even though I don't particularly like her much, but Motoko is meant to be a cyborg - and not even a unique design - although she has modifications for her job she looks like many other cyborgs and I dunno. I guess ScarJo still looks too young and shes too expressive, to human, she looks very 'girl next door' to me. Her face doesn't have much hardness about it, I'm having a hard time believing her barking orders and shit.

Plus she's not very tall, I know Arise seems to have turned Motoko into Mary-Kate and Ashley: Emo edition. But (and again maybe I'm totally wrong on this) I always thought Motoko was at least average height for a female, maybe a little taller and it was just that all the guys in Section 9 are fucking huge in comparison.

Insofar as her level of being expressive, I think that Under the Skin MIGHT change your mind on that. That + Her is what gave me confidence that she could do the Cyborg stuff, whereas the MCU is where my confidence in her weapons and other military-type badassery comes from.

In a couple of the interviews, they specifically mention that all of her mannerisms are subtle, and talk about the challenges of skirting the line between too robotic and too human in portraying the Major. One's here and there's another one that I can't find at the moment that was done just prior to the Tokyo event (if I do, I'll link it).

What's also covered in the interviews is that there's a lot of exploration of self, so the Major goes under changes throughout the film, and especially with the focus on Kuze and Affection as an inspiration, I'm really curious where they're gonna go with it. I do get your hesitance for the more commanding presence that Motoko has with her unit being something we haven't seen and is much harder to imagine coming from her.

Lastly, it looks like when speaking to a bunch of journalists after the event, aside from the large amount of respect that Rupert Sander has for her talents as an actress, he also addresses her casting being tied to giving them the ability to fill out the rest of the cast list with a more international group of anyone else they wanted, and not just other big name Hollywood actors. It's nice to know that I wasn't just assuming those things were big factors.

The problem is that (and this is the problem that godawful Dragonball movie had too) anime hair is 200% fucking fabulous and nothing short of a highly unrealistic wig or CGI is going to be matched by Hollywood's artists :monster:

Like, you can make the spikes and the bangs but how is it going to look on an actual real life person

To me, the hairstyle of the manga is -- by no coincidence -- reminiscent of bushy 1980s hairstyles. Just google it (1980s hairstyles). It ain't a hard thing to achieve at all.

Yeah, but again – that version of the hairstyle is one of those things that took lots of styling and look ridiculous as FUCK now. There's no way that version of that haircut'd be used.

There are several 1980s retrofuture designs in the film already paying homage to the original appearance of things in some respect. I could see the hairstyle working too.

You can't mention Clint Mansell without mentioning Mass Effect 3's soundtrack, a curse upon your house sir.

Thank you for adding in that glaring omission in my aforementioned brief list of his works. specifically because I have never played any of the Mass Effect games or heard their soundtracks because of reasons, which is, in and of itself likely an even more egregious source of outrage than not knowing he composed the music.

Clint Mansell didn't even compose that track, Lex, he did Leaving Earth and contributed that theme to the end track :monster:

It was a good track but like many videogame commissions like Hans Zimmer or w/e they only hurk out a theme or two for money lol and so they can put a big name on the album
I'd say for most people they'd remember The Fountain more :P

Yeah for sure on the Fountain. Especially how it all comes together at the end during Death is the Road to Awe.

Well if Weta is involved you at least know the props will look awesome even if the film does suck balls :monster:

You can read quite a bit about some little plot points and things in the notes of the images if you're so inclined. Also - I'm pleased that I was able to identify that the Geishas were physical props and not digital.

The props on the Hobbit films - actual physical props not CGI - did look awesome. Those Weta guys have insane attention to detail.

Tru, tru. They had the extra challenge of HD resolution and shit; iirc the real LotR movies were still in the pre-HD era. ish. idk.

Minor note: There seemed to be an EVER SO SLIGHTLY different version of the trailer that I saw it in theaters last night. There're a couple new scenes and shots in it, but it's otherwise identical to the one we've already seen (which I assume is the trailer that got rated and was potentially coming out yesterday). No official uploads of it, or I'd link it.

So this part from 2nd GIG (that I just finished again) gets into the sort of thing that I think will be a factor with Kuze in this film.

Additionally, this bit starting at 5:04 - 5:46 is another part detailing how the "real" (i.e. biological) identity of the Major is completely unknown to her. A follow-up on the fact that "Motoko Kusanagi" is listed solely as a pseudonym rather than as her real name just like in the Section 9 list in S.A.C. which is always something I find surprising (especially given the identity controversy with her character as portrayed in this film).
