And so it ends.
That ending was touching. I can honestly say it was a good conclusion to the plot lines of the main characters. And Xehanort made for a badass final boss. Rutger Hauer deserves some major props filling in the shoes of the late Leonard Nemoy. His Xehanort voice wasn't as good but it was fucking impressive and fit. Like, I didn't think I'd like it as much at first but when I listened to him more and got into the story, it fit him well.
Sora going POOF at the end pretty much fulfilled what Young Xehanort said to him. His time was up.
...And can we just marvel at the irony that the
young Xehanort was the truly the most evil of the trio of time displaced Xehanorts?
Xemnas had a moment of humanity at the end of his existence... Feeling the intense loneliness of having abandoned his friends and connections.
Xehanort's heartless felt the despair and emptiness of having surrendered to darkness and felt pangs of regret. He even wished Riku well and to always move forward and seek more.
But YOUNG XEHANORT gloated like a
snot-nosed asshole and rubbed in that he would have the last laugh and Sora would vanish from foolishly overusing his power.
Which is rather hilarious when you think back to the younger Xehanort being so cute and seemingly charming with his friendship of Eraqus in the past.
I have to say, that while Sora is not anywhere up there in terms of favorite heroes or protagonists, I did admire how he was willing to go that far to save Kairi. For a walking base-sum of Shonen Protagonists, he was likeable enough and endearing. The twinge of emotion I felt at all his friends reuniting on Destiny Islands and him sadly going away was real.
The final climax and boss fights of the game were awesome. Fighting alongside everyone was
wonderful.
That said, this game was....
Very easy. Like, a total cakewalk. And I was playing on Proud Mode. I unlocked the Secret Ending teaser movie and I only found 36 Lucky Emblems.
And I didn't even try.
The only part of the game that came
close to giving me a modicum of difficulty was the Pirates World. The pirate ship battles were strangely difficult. I had to grind and get my ship up to level 8 to not get blasted to hell and back. But aside from that?
I just chose a full on magic build, powered up my 7-11 keyblade to max power, and just blasted most enemies with magic and won.
I never had to use a single meal.
I never had to worry about which keyblades to use.
Fire magic seems strangely more powerful than the other spells. Like, the tracking/homing of the spell along with its base damage is ridiculous. Also, the boost to spell you get with the ability just makes it a sick damage dealer. It's fast and has great tracking. Overall the game was fun but nowhere near as challenging as any of the other games.
Three major questions though.
What the hell happened to the neophytes of the Organization after their defeat?
What was the card Luxord gave Sora?
What the hell happened to that lame piece of shit Demyx?
Another important question is what happened to the Lingering Will, but I kinda have a theory on that.
The Lingering Will was Terra's displaced will and consciousness. It finally got to meet with Terra/Xehanort's body and heart, which was the Guardian. Terra-nort probably defeated it, but in reality that consciousness went inside the Guardian, finally allowing it to have some semblance of volition once more. Because once it finally awoke to seeing Aqua and Ven in distress, it said the same words as the Lingering Will did when it clashed with Xehanort. So yeah, I think it went back to Terra's heart and was the first step in allowing Terra to finally reclaim control of his body.
In the end, if I had to compare this game entry to another trilogy, I'd compare it to Star War's "Return of the Jedi." Both had stellar conclusions, questionable choices made during the middle, and a rather neat hook that was at the beginning. Which in turn led to it being a mixed bag that at least gave a satisfying and emotional conclusion. Is it the best entry in the trilogy?
No, I still think KH2 was the far better game in terms of content, story, and it gave a far better experience over all with all that it included, which I'd compare to The Empire Strikes Back
For one, the world choices in this game were just alright. Big Hero 6, Monsters Inc, and Toy Story were admittedly wonderful choices. They made use of those worlds for the story perfectly.
Pirates and Hercules were mediocre.
100 Acre Woods, Frozen and Tangled however just felt...
Sorta there? Like, they didn't contribute much at all in terms of the overarching Kingdom Hearts storyline. They felt monotonous.
And then the game leaning in
hard on the Union X convoluted plot threads... I already made my feelings clear on that. The game purposefully sprinkled unresolved plot threads and questions to serve as glaring sequel bait. To the detriment of the story, imo. We shouldn't
have to wait for another entry, on a freemium mobile game no less, to have resolution and answers on how Larxene, Marluxia, Luxord, and Demyx play a part in the Keyblade War. This should have been cleared up here, in the game people waited years for. What was that ominous statement by Xemnas referring to? Who is this mysterious girl Saix and Axel were trying to rescue? Who the fuck was the girl Ansem the Wise was experimenting on?
What the fuck is in the black box?
It wouldn't be so bad if KH3 didn't lean in on such a bad game with bland, unlikeable characters. The original Foretellers are not unique, chrasmatic or interesting at all. The only one who comes close is Streletzia who was murdered.
Things could have at least been wrapped up neatly for the ending of this trilogy. It was their chance to wipe the slate clean for a fresh new plot or adventure. And yeah, I had hoped for a far more
simple and clean plot that would have been focused on the conclusion of the Xehanort saga and crossing over FF and Disney too.
Instead, they laid on the Union X, time traveling, body hoping convoluted dangling plot threads
thick.
At this point, I'm rather ambivalent about the series going forward.
.....
....However, I'd be lying if I said that secret teaser movie I just watched didn't manage to tease me a little,
goddamnit.
Because... Given what we saw and know happened to Sora in the end, it looks like he's in some sort of Reaper's Game from "The World Ends With You."
If
this is what Neku meant when he said he'd see Sora again....That'd be so fucking sick and twisted. If this teaser, along with the inclusion of Yuzora is a hint at Nomura FINALLY giving in and crossing Sora over more with S-E's IPs... I can't help but be intrigued.
But who knows at this point. I'll keep my hopes and dreams tempered this time.
In the end, I'm glad it's over. It was a fun, wild ride.
