In browsing the internets I stumbled across this bit on why it matters that he was cast as a White actor rather than an Asian actor.

Short summary:

While there is the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" issue between "white guy cultural appropriation of Asian culture" vs. the "only ever casting Asians as martial arts specialists" what the argument FOR keeping him as rich, white, privileged Danny Rand is, has to do with the interplay of racial privilege between Danny Rand & Luke Cage as a team of a white & black hero.

Figured the comment might be a good bookmark as a talking point (unlike the article itself).

I'd go one further and say they purposely got outdoing the infamous hallway fight scene out of the way early, so it's not the big thing of the season.
