I don't want to confuse anyone because I did come to the conclusion that Johnny was from Nibelheim, it's just Ryu made me think that maybe he's not, lol.

iirc the only time Johnny speaks about Tifa is in sector 7, and they have no direct interactions.

In Costa del Sol, if Tifa isn't in the party, she's in Johnny house, talking to him about "old times"

He also talks about Tifa if you talk to him in Sector 7, in a deleted scene. And he's also outside the Honey Bee Inn, waiting to be Tifa's first "client"

And yeah he's from Nibelheim. (probably the little redhead kid from Tifa's threesome in the Lifestream flashback) He also seemed to have been in the military (but not in SOLDIER) which makes him the third Nibelheim survivor

Yeah but what says he's from Nibelheim? The letter doesn't say who the boy is (and Tifa had plenty of admirers).

All I can find is some bizarre quote in the script from Johnny to Cloud, at Costa Del Sol, saying they were both in SOLDIER and before that, childhood friends. Then he calls Cloud a playboy and a blankety-blank murderer. But then, he can't seem to tell if Cloud's the guy he's remembering or not. All in all it's a wierd fucking thing to say and seems really out of place.

All the time's I've played this game, and all the fanfic's I've read, and I never realised he waiting outside the HoneyBee Inn to sleep with Tifa! But it makes sense. Though it hardly qualifies him as a real friend.

Do you remember what he says? I know he was outside not sure if he should go in, etc. I don't remember him saying he wants to be Tifa's first client.

How do you know he's from Nibelheim? Because of the letter? But if he wrote her that letter, then he would have left prior to the Nibelheim incident.

Especially since Cloud was never in SOLDIER. Unless he means SOLDIER training, which Cloud failed. And Cloud a playboy? I doubt it. I seriously doubt any of Cloud's "childhood friends" would remember him that way. Must be thinking of someone else, lol.

It's actually just one letter from anon childhood friend. (The other ones are from Zangan and insidious Shinra employee.)

What it Says - Cloud reads the letter, noting first that it was "addressed to Tifa from the son of the guy that runs the General Store..."

"Tifa, how are you? I just arrived in Midgar eight days ago."
"Yesterday, all of Nibelheim got together to welcome me. The only person that we couldn't get a hold of was Cloud."
"But everyone said he wasn't really that close to us. So even if we asked, he probably wouldn't have come anyway."
"Well, enough about him."
"Midgar is really something. But to tell the truth, I feel so behind on everything... so out of it."
"Even the rooms of people in the slums are clean."
"Right now I'm living in the slums, but I plan to move to a really nice room, like the ones I've seen in magazines, once I make some money."
"...But, to do that, I guess I have to find a job first. That's right. I still haven't found a job yet."
"I lied to my parents and told them I found a great job with Shinra, Inc."
"I wonder if it's too late to go back. Sometimes I think I should've taken over my parents' store."

At this point, Tifa will interrupt and ask if Cloud remembers all of the letter. Select "Yeah, I remember" and Cloud will continue, noting that he recalled it "Because there was some stuff about me..."

"I just made it here to Midgar but all I think about is Nibelheim."
"Hey, Tifa... Is that stupid old water tower still working?"
"Is the old man at the Inn doing well? Are my parents still at the shop everyday? Have any monsters attacked?"
"And most of all, how are you, Tifa? It feels like I havent' seen you for years."
"We were all talking about you last night."
"Everyone likes you. But because everyone idolizes you, I couldn't very well stab them in the back."
"I always acted cool, but actually, I was just afraid of being jilted."
"Wow, if I keep writing like this, this'll become a love letter!"
"So, I think I'll stop here. Take care. I'll write again."
"P.S. Write me back, okay?"

On a tangent, I wonder if this game weren't so fucking vague that we would have such long and interesting discussions about life, the universe, and everything.

Redhead kid? I see three brunettes (one maybe light brown/blonde), and one of them is wearing a red hat. That's what it looks like to me anyways. Anyone else want to take a look? You can see them better in the first vid.

I think we associated it with Johnny, rather reasonably, on a cursory examination, as there was a redheaded (or redhatted, as Tifabelle just pointed out) kid in the group, the other boys left town,and he does call Cloud 'his' childhood friend when wigging out (though I wonder if this might not be throwing it back in Cloud's face like he does near Honeybee inn during the Wall Market quest instead of meaning to call Cloud his childhood friend.) but it definitely falls apart on further examination, and the compilation has certainly been unkind to it.

Just like a lot of crackpot ideas people came up with back in the day.
"Cloud's Cetra Family" is one I only encountered once, but I don't think I'll ever forget it. Nor Well Organized Time Compression for VIII.

None of that makes sense. Cloud wasn't in SOLDIER (unless he's referring to training). Childhood friends? Perhaps, but he gets everything else wrong. A playboy? Ha! Not Cloud. A murderer? I'm not sure... Why can't he remember his name? He knew his name back in Midgar. All in all, very weird.


EDIT: Maybe he calls Cloud a murderer because of AVALANCHE or the plate dropping?

In all the stuff they're released about FFVII, they've never said Johnny was from Nibelheim or in SOLDIER. Those seem like pretty big deals, you'd think they'd mention it somewhere. Or that his parents would, seeing as they actually talk about Nibelheim.

The thing about him and Cloud being in SOLDIER and childhood friends could be chalked up to the same reason we got 'that's how you fooled them' and the like. He's talking about Cloud, not himself. The UO explains his strange remarks as being possibly due to the recent series of shocks he's experienced.

It's Johnny going through Wugga Wugga headscrew of his own, methinks. I'm not sure any of that is really reliable. Like I said, Johnny being a Nibel survivor makes some amount of sense at a cursory glance, and then none at a deeper one.
So, yeah.

Also, on the subject of Tseng and Aerith's friendship, you do have to wonder how much of an actual 'friendship' it was, and how much was that Tseng was the biggest constant in her life aside from her adopted Mom. Even in CC, he's a lot more distant from her than everyone else in the Slums.

I thought there was one mention of him being in SOLDIER, though I'll definitely admit to possibly misremembering that one, since it might have been one of those 'in preproduction' things.
