I mean really, I don't have a problem with Tifa waiting for years for someone she didn't know that well. Love at first sight maybe? Tifa was asked out to the watertower many times, but Cloud was the one she really paid attention to, so it makes sense that she'd wait for him. Even if she didn't know him that well. He caught her eye, they made a promise, of course she'd wait for him.

Love is not rational. But people are... sort of. Would you get all dressed up for a guy you know from one conversation 5 (?) years later upon his return? But you might for someone you feel connected with by more than just the warm feeling in your chest.

Let me put things another way. From what I see in the minds of some here, Tifa only knew about Cloud what we see in the Lifestream. Which is (correct me if I'm wrong) the following:

1) Cloud's existence.
2) That he got in fights.
3) What he said on the tower.

I don't think that is possible.

Yes, if he made a promise to me and I felt there was a connection... but... this is me we're talking about.

I'm sure she knew him somewhat, but I don't think they were that close as she said. I mean I take her word for it. Not saying they didn't know each other at all, but it wasn't as well as some people might try to make it seem.

Well, Cloud is obviously very horny for Tifa, and Tifa thought he was cute, and if we take her monologue from dismantled (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the details), he was the only boy she actually took up on the water tower jaunt with.
They're teens and interested in each other.

Horny isn't even worth going yay/nay over.

She probably said hi to him here and there, and had a few short "how are you" conversations, but the emphasis on the well scene was because it was their last significant interaction before he left. if it wasn't, then well, it doesn't really make sense from a writing standpoint to focus on it!

Yes, in that they'll probably go further, but 13 and 14 year olds are just as emotional and hormonal, if not moreso, than the older teens.

I don't know, man. I still think you're being entirely too rational in your analysis. Love doesn't have hard and fast criteria to exist. It can be completely retarded and make no sense. It can start with physical attraction and wishful thinking and work backwards from there. (Hell, isn't that how it usually works?)

One could argue that Cloud and Tifa don't have enough to go on in the game, either. It's not like Cloud and Tifa spend all kinds of time bonding before she's on her knees sobbing in his lap, saying he's the only thing in the world that matters. She's in love whether the player leans toward her or not, right? It makes no sense.

But that's the power of love.

It can be narratively significant without being their last interaction before he leaves (which I don't think it's even been called). It can be the time they first really 'connected.' It IS the time of their unifying promise.

It can be narratively significant without being their last interaction before he leaves (which I don't think it's even been called). It can be the time they first really 'connected.' It IS the time of their unifying promise.

Exactly. The significance of this scene is the promise & of Cloud's announcement of joining SOLDIER. Just because this scene was highlighted doesn't mean it was necessarily their last significant interaction.


Also, I'm 26 and I have work tomorrow. My Halloween fun was earlier in the evening

I'm not actually arguing that Hanky Panky occurred. I think they'd both be too shy at that point to even try. But I do think they'd be impulsive and emotional.
My point isn't 'They were ultra super close' but 'She knew how he acted, had some idea of what was and was not Cloud, and so either she's been paying attention to him beforehand, they got to know each other a little before he left, or both.

I had some kids banging on my door earlier... literally banging the fuck out of the door too. I thought someone was trying to break in and was tempted to grab a knife from the kitchen. I told them I didn't have candy then put up a sign that said I don't have any. You know there are apartments I've been in that do trick or treating and some don't... I guess this is one that does.

Also, keep in mind that Tifa is the one that brings up that memory to remind Cloud of the promise he made. Then they revisit it later. It doesn't have to be the last time they spoke.

Why are we picking apart Cloud and Tifa's Nibelheim relationship anyway? Does this go back to Tifa supposedly knowing more about Cloud than Aerith and therefore having more valid feelings for him?
