And he
lost his mother
. It doesn't matter, he's shown to be that way since childhood. They redefined him with too much humanity and it cost him his gravitas. He's barely a Vulcan anymore.

And
WHY THE FUCK CAN'T THEY MAKE AN ORIGINAL VILLIAN? How many fucking times are they gonna regurgitate Khan?

As far as I remember, they never really showed much of Spock's childhood in the original continuity, so for all we know his behaviour before
the genocide of his homeworld
isn't a radical recasting of the character, since the only time he's shown to get particularly emotional before then in the new film was when his family was insulted as a kid. Furthermore, the fact that all Vulcans are shown to undergo training to keep their emotions in check as children kind of indicates that his behaviour at that age probably isn't that atypical, especially for a half-human.

But that one scene of child Spock is his backstory, and because it's the only one, it's obviously intended to establish his central character arc; his emotions are far closer to the surface and more difficult to control in this incarnation. And that scene contrasts him with normal Vulcan children by showing how easily he's goaded into rage.

He does have reason to be upset, but I think it's a means to an end. He's been blatantly retooled to have more sex appeal and it irritates me.

I wouldn't say it's the only backstory we get; there are several other scenes relating to his heritage which show him much more in control of his emotions. It's also worth noting that he's significantly younger in the film than in the series; with experience does come a certain amount of control.

That said, I do agree that they're taking the character in a different direction, but expecting all characters to behave the same after going through such traumatic events is pretty unrealistic anyway. And it's not as if the character was never intended to have sex appeal in the first place; at least, if he wasn't intended to have any, they did a very bad job of not giving him any :monster:

My basic reaction upon seeing Spock/Uhura as canonz. Idk, makes sense to me anyway. And anything is better than Kirk/Uhura.

Did we? Ok, I remember one where he almost failed to complete the ritual, but that's certainly not in control of his emotions. And sure, he's young, but you typically don't gain a rank of commander (O-5!) without developing a tight poise and command presence.

Oh well. I suppose we can agree to disagree.

Oh sure, he's an icon in *cough* certain circles, no question. :) I don't have a problem with good looking actors, or experimenting with character interpretations, but it seems they did Spock for the express purpose of targeting a younger audience. They didn't compromise Kirk, Scotty, McCoy, Sulu or Chekov that way. (McCoy was EPIC btw :monster:)

What, making out in the turbolift out of the blue made sense? :P

Karl Urban NAILED DeForrest Kelley's nuances; it was a joy to watch him. All the new actors gave excellent performances, I thought, but I think Urban was probably the best, followed closely by Quinto.

And
it would make sense for a woman to go comfort her potential love interest after his home planet was destroyed and mother murdered
, I think :monster:

Pay attention y'all spammy n00bs, this is how you properly go off topic.

Did we really know he was a potential love interest beforehand though? That's a bad/wierd time to start showing romantic inclination.

I know, right? :monster:

I thought it was pretty obvious she had a crush on him from the moment their characters first interacted. Whether he returned the sentiment wasn't so obvious, but that's kind of a given since Vulcans are supposed to be stoic. What he goes through in the rest of the film kind of shows him coming to terms with his human heritage as well, i'maho.

Star Trek discussion necessitates Star Trek .gifs, :rabite:learly.

Though it's not as if this forum is devoid of Star Trek-related imagery, anyway.

Well, the thread isn't a debate thread anymore. :monster: Since Monkeyshines is pretty vague, we can assume that everyone is on topic?
