The Gunblade

I am sure I'll be ripped to shreds for posting my opinion, but its never stopped me before, lolz

Anyways, I hate this weapon, I honestly think it was one of the dumbest weapons ever put into a game, See, I can understand why very few people use the gunblade in FF8, Cause straight put to use it you have to have some weird kinda bone structure, if a person with a normal body were to sue it you hit something hard enoguh and you would just break your wrist, There, My opinion of the gunblade, feel free to post your own opinions on ewhat you think of it. You know, also, Other questions, does it do more damage if you pull trigger? does it vibrate as it slices an enemy?

Well, it depends on how you look at it.

From a realistic, anatomical, and weaponry point of view, the Gunblade is an incredibly, incredibly dumb concept because it is entirely impossible for it to work in real life, ever. Even real life bayonets attached to rifles aren't comparable because the Gunblade doesn't shoot bullets, and even if it did, that would make the idea even dumber.

But from a Final Fantasy point of view, well...it's not THAT bad. However I understand how it would kinda mess up the suspension of disbelief for some people once you know exactly how bad an idea the Gunblade would be in real life.

Actually in Dissidia, the gunblade does shoot bullets. :monster:

Squall apparently can fire off energy and magic bullets with it, and when he does Fated Circle, he has to pull the trigger to make the energy explode.

If you stop trying to take everything so seriously in a fantasy setting, I'm sure the gunblade won't look any stupider than an oversized kitchen knife that would break off at the handle if it was ever wielded in real life.

Took this pic when i was in prague.
SE just steals all the eastern european tools :P

But yeah its a bloody game im pretty sure a guy couldnt really lift a sword that would weigh 3x his entire body mass like in real life either.
All in all like make said

I really don't see how it's any stupider than all the other weapons either.

The gunblade looks pretty neat too.

Seifer's looked shit though.

You don't need to suspend that much disbelief with the Buster Sword. It's just a giant sword.

The Gunblade is just eyecandy which doesn't make sense. Now the gunblades in DoC & FFXIII - they have some credibility.

Yep, you don't have to suspend disbelief at all when a toothpick man swings around a helicopter blade with a handle on it.

The gunblade is no more nonsensical than all of the other shit in final fantasy 8/

That's because the logistics of a Gunblade not making sense seem to be a lot more apparent than the Buster Sword, for whatever reason. They're both as nonsensical as the other, but the Gunblade is more 'eye catching'. Small men wielding huge swords have been around in fiction for quite some time, but a gunblade is a new player in the fictional weapons field.

I also think people took more notice to the Gunblade because it actually tries to explain itself and it's mechanisms away, rather than the Buster Sword, which is just 'there'.

Just throwin' out theories.

I don't really recall the game trying to explain the gunblade and it's mechanisms away.

I remember them explaining how to use it though.

It's not just that it was a dumb weapon, it was a deliberately thought out (to the point of making it a storyline issue) and no one in the development room stood up and said "Uh, hey guys, this is fucking DUMB ok?"

Seriously...

Just started FF8 (Yeah I know) and yes its pretty stupid since you can't actually shoot things so in that sense it is dumb. I think if it were an actual weapon used throughout the series it'd be okay since someone could use it for close range and long range. I too like the buster sword but in real life i don't think anybody could handle that or the gunblade 8D

It's basically just a "vibra-edge" weapon, which is a pretty long standing thing in science fiction. The round makes the blade vibrate, temporarily amplifying cutting power and increasing damage.

It's not that different in concept from a pile bunker, which aren't uncommon in Japanese anime and games, basically as a jack hammer built into a shield or knuckle weapon, sometimes using bullets to propel the mechanism.

Anyway, I seem to recall people thinking Squall's design AND his gunblade were both pretty freakin' awesome when FFVIII was new. I even remember people I went to highschool with that didn't play video games thinking it was pretty cool.

I still don't see how it's oh so "stoopid" everything in FFVIII sounds ridiculous when you talk about it in a certain way.

If they were making a game set realistically and have a person be able to wield something like the Gunblade, there would certainly be some problems. But, considering this is Final Fantasy, it's nothing unusual. Sora (I know it's not FF, but you still get the point) wields a Keyblade. That's not realistic, either.

However, the fact that it doesn't actually shoot bullets is pretty stupid. Apparently they were just going about the Gun part of it in the way that it looks. It looks like it has a Gun at the end of it, hence Gunblade. So, in the end it's pretty stupid. But regardless I still consider it an awesome weapon, and I don't think it matters in the FF world.

Point. :monster:

And I don't get how the keyblade can do much damage anyway. It always looked kinda light and not so harmful.

Oooh, ooh! :monster: I thought it was pretty cool as well. Except I first saw it in KH and I was pretty weirded out at Leon's weapon, but it looked so darned cool on him. :awesome:

I was hoping Sora could get a hold of a keyblade much like it.

That was pretty much my entire point. Except I babble, so it doesn't sound as good.

Well, in both games he does get one from Squall, but it's not a Gunblade. Just a really good, really cool-looking Keyblade. :P

Unfortunately, it didn't look as cool to me. :awesome: I was thinking maybe it looks exactly like the gunblade, except it's a keyblade.

Though I do want one of those gunblade keychains. :monster:

True. :monster: This is called Final Fantasy.

If we're questioning the keyblade here, then we should question Balamb-the-moving-Garden. How does that work IRL, eh? :awesome:
