Late to the game, the movie was... ok to good, but I still had a few gripes.

Smaug ain't a pre-credits villain. Deal with him properly in movie two, or give him decent screentime in this one.
Didn't love how much Legolas and Tauriel interfered with Thorin's fight, that's one moment the dwarves could shine, move the Bolg fight somewhere else Didn't bother me that Tauriel didn't die, the Fellowship never goes to Mirkwood, so they wouldn't really have met her. Maybe it's just hard to do fight scenes in those dwarf costumes.
Somebody back the way said that Legolas elevated Gimli because of that point scoring thing. Thing is, any time that was brought up it was played for laughs at Gimli's expense, ie.
"Two already!"
"I'm on seventeen-nineteen!"

so it doesn't really work.

LotR's cinema version is the exact opposite of the Hobbit's in terms of what ended up being in the movie, 
I for one hope the Director's Cut is actually the short version. They could call it "What we first intended before New Line or Jackson or whoever decided they wanted moar money because neither of them managed to make any major movie again since LotR and they want to buy another mansion"

So I watched Desolation of Smaug and Battle of the Five Armies on Netflix.
Overall enjoyment. Only this time with glaring plot holes and the awkward realisation that my favourite scenes were once again completely unnecessary as part of the movies (had the same deal with LOTR, I pretty much love them but skip every scene when Frodo and Sam are on their own. Except the ones with Faramir because grrr yummy).
Anyway back to these two. I watched the first one in the cinema many moons ago, so marathoning these two was overdue. Overall it was a positive experience. But as I said before it's awkward that the actual story didn't really interest me. Smaug was fucking brilliant though, legit I was impressed with both the CG and his voice. The High Fells/ Dol Goldur stuff was also good shit imo, thoroughly enjoyed watching those scenes. I liked Tauriel. Uhhhh.... remember all the shit that happened is hard so I'll leave it there for now. But yeah once again I enjoy the off-story more than the actual story. Definitely need to watch the extended cuts of all three movies.

I'm really looking forward to the final extended film to see if they clear that up a bit, because the theatrical cut spends more time with the Elves=bad, Dwarves=good, so it'll be nice to see a cut of the last one where everyone is equally good and equally bad. Also, insofar as the Arkenstone, I think that gets left where they bury Throin, which I'm not sure they showed in the theatrical version?

The first two films are especially strong in portraying that dynamic -- even in the delivery of the retelling of the historical events that caused their strife, whereas the EE of both of them are much more even about everybody was a little bit to blame.
