I think it's probably just a retcon. Initially, I think SE meant it to be about Aerith and then they made Duodecim and trolled everyone like they always do

SE is just one giant troll.

also i guess i'd just prefer to keep it as a line for aeris cause it's kinda lame that they'd use something that was meaningful between two characters as a lazy rehash

like i'd be just as disappointed if in KH aeris used tifa's "words aren't the only way" line or a starry night promise scene because that was something special between cloud and tifa. kinda loses meaning to just trade and recycle memorable lines like that.

Never put anything past SE. They have already butchered many, many things. Like the scene with Cloud falling through Aerith's church, something meant to be unique to them...

And then they made it all: OH IT'S CAUSE ZACK DID IT TOO.

Lazy. All of them. LAZY FUCKING TROLLS. D<

Good story tellers would think like you, Zee. But this is SE and ruining things is in their nature. -_-

what happened in dissidia again i forgot

and "i want to meet" has always been a cloud/aeris line so yeah

i don't think square-enix is that retarded to have that line refer to any other character

then again i'm talking about square-enix who totally tainted the church crashing scene for me rip

The fact that they changed the line to imply that it refers to someone else proves that obviously they are.

My last post on first page has all the cut scenes. :D

But in short. Dissidia = Pure Cloud/Aerith
Duodecim (prequel) = massive troll

Cloud has memories and Tifa doesn't. Sephiroth doesn't have many memories. Kefka is evil and devises a plan to put Cloud against Sephiroth even though they're both on Chaos' side. He tells Sephy that he has to fight someone from his own world to regain memories. So Sephy hunts down Tifa and fights her.

Kefka tells Cloud and Cloud freaks. He rushes and protects Tifa and they have this tl;dr conversation about how he doesn't actually know her and that next time, he'd fight her. Tifa is all cute and flirty and thinks he's off his rocker because he saved her even though he's her enemy. Before she leaves, she asks him if they'll meet again.

He says yes blah blah. Cloud then goes off to fight Chaos because he wants to save Tifa from regaining her memories and losing her will to fight. Cloud sucks and loses and prays to Cosmos to protect Tifa but the stupid bitch is useless and Tifa sacrifices herself along with the others for the next cycle.

In Dissida, Cloud is all mopey and doesn't have a reason to fight anymore. Sephy trolls him. Eventually, Cloud wins, gets his crystal that looks like the holy materia and Sephy tells him: we'll meet again.

And Cloud replies: No thanks. The only person I want to meet is...

THE END

Yes. Dissidia is just a mega confusion and really, it can go either way because SE is dumb like that. Nothing new.

Yeah but it's pretty obvious that the line isn't in reference to Aeris in Dissidia.

I mean yeah it is an indirect reference to what was said by Cloud in FF7, but in Dissidia it clearly couldn't be Aerith. She's pretty much completely irrelevant in that series.

Uh, Cloud says "So we meet again" to Tifa in the OG, wishes her luck in meeting the real him, and says "We meet again" a third time.

Aerith he just says he can meet, and hell, Tifa's the one to express the desire to meet her there.

Line, on its own, could go either fucking way. In the greater context of Dissidia, it required deliberate narrative blindness to insist it isn't thematically linked to Cloud and Tifa's interactions in the 012 arc.
Since, y'know, "what am I fighting for" is also linked to that.

Although what you're saying is true, Ryu, the line has been more infamously attached to Aerith though. :T

Probably because it was in the ending and because she died and it was her wish on her date with Cloud. And because it was a pivotal point for Cloud's character.

But, it also did have serious meaning with Tifa, too. Just...when people think about the "meet" thing, it's always gotten tagged with Aerith and Cloud. So I can see why everyone drew that conclusion.

Heck, I did too when I played Dissidia. It made sense, especially when Cloud got his crystal and it looked like the white materia.

I'm telling you, SE ARE JUST MASSIVE FUCKING TROLLS.

People forget that the holy materia isn't just Aerith's lucky bauble though.

It was the symbol of hope and salvation for their entire planet.

Also, it summons Holy dammit, call it what I wants.

Fixed that.

That which has stuck in your head, BTW, is not as narratively important as you might think. 'Meeting' when coming from Cloud, is more often associated with Tifa, than Aerith. Meeting Tifa is a theme present at several times throughout the OG. Dissidia also has a rather obvious reference to Tifa in the 'wish on a star' line, far more obvious, IMO, than 'want to meet= Aerith'

I'm saying, if it's an external reference, it, like the Crystal, is an ambiguous one with a particular meaning read into it by fans. As an internal narrative point, it is UNambiguous, and contradicts one of the meanings read into the ambiguous reference.

MY BAD. Thanks, I fixed it. :P

I know, but it was the combination of that line and the materia. :T It definitely didn't say TIFA to me, that's all I'm trying to say I guess.

But then Duodecim came out and suddenly, nothing made any sense. Everything about Cloud revolved around Tifa in that game so the line sort of feels weird when only directed to Aerith, even though that's how it should have been.

It is extremely unlikely that Cloud meant Tifa in FF7...if he did then he is probably smoking some mako again as Tifa is standing right next to him when he says it.

But I wouldn't put it past Cloud xd

Of course he was talking about Aerith in FF7.

We're talking about Dissidia :P

My point is that neither said ANYTHING. Both the Crystal and the Line were at best ambiguous reference to the world Cloud originated from, not an individual from that world- at least in the context of Dissidia- same as Tidus' sphere was reference to no one in particular, Cecil's crystal or the moon, Firi's flower, Squall's thingy, not a damn one of these references a particular entity, just the world and maybe the theme of the game each character originates from.
The one exception to this is Squall's feather, and that's because his game is unavoidably thematically A LOVE STORY.
In short- It didn't mean anyone in particular, just as all 9 other heroes had inspecific crystals representing their worlds, not anyone in them.
Remember, the reference to Rinoa is the feather, not a crystal.
And again, the Materia looks just like any generic magic materia.

But then Duodecim came out and suddenly, nothing made any sense. Everything about Cloud revolved around Tifa in that game so the line sort of feels weird when only directed to Aerith, even though that's how it should have been.

'Should have' is your own value judgement applied to a line you inferred as referencing Aerith.
My point- it wasn't referencing anyone originally.
The Materia isn't referencing anyONE either.

Cloud has no need to meet Tifa, as she's definitely there in the OG. She's not there in Dissidia.

Moreover, the context of the line in the OG shouldn't be overlooked. Cloud and Tifa are hanging from a Cliff, possibly trapped alone in their final moments. Cloud- unless he's an utter douche- is trying to assuage the situation by saying 'It's possible to meet Aerith again, death's not the end' to which Tifa says 'Yes, let us go meet here'

I am paraphrasing of course.

I know, I know. But it doesn't change the fact that the line is more notorious for Aerith and Cloud. I think both events had equal significance on Cloud's character but one pertained more to the female character. The line means more to Aerith because it was her last wish and that makes it more memorable.

Aw come on, can you blame people for assuming the materia could be the white materia? I dunno, in the original Dissidia, it makes more sense for it all to have been about Aerith and not Tifa seeing as how at that point, neither was in the game.

I know there was the reference to the star line but, I just didn't see Tifa in the original Dissidia at all. Whatsoever. The flower thing, the materia, the meeting line just screamed Aerith to me and it probably would have stayed that way if it weren't for Duodecim. :P

People keep insisting it's the white materia. They keep pulling this entirely out of their ass. This is not about butthurt, this is about people spouting shit without evidence and treating it as fact.

Doesn't it turn white after the spell is cast?

Also people seem to be missing Ryu's point. Cloud's line "The one I want to meet" could be talking about several different lines from FFVII, not just the one in the end.
