I went to sleep at 7:15am and at 8am my grandma wakes me up to rake the leaves outside because it's going to snow soon.

So yeah, my fucking phone is broken. It didn't charge when I plugged it into another charger, nor did it charge when I put another battery in it. It's probably not worth repairing it since you can get a new one for $70 and it would almost certainly cost a lot more to repair, which actually pisses me off possibly even more than the phone being broken because I hate throwing old electronics away. It seems like such a waste. No one ever repairs anything anymore; they just buy new shit. But that's the way the economy is set up. I guess there isn't much intrinsic profitability in repairing old products, so people have to charge up the nose to do so. On the plus side, my parents had a spare phone they're letting me borrow, and I can just move the SIM card (is that the correct acronym? I can't even remember) to the new phone. On the minus side, it's pink. Not really my colour.

I did manage to get back to sleep, at least. Not as long as I'd have liked, but hey, I feel at least slightly rested.

I managed to grab a whopping 4 and a half hours of sleep this morning before getting up and heading out to put in a job application at this lodge that needs a whole new kitchen crew. And then spent more than two hours and a half a tank of gas looking for it, only to be told different directions every time I stopped to ask (the directions I was using to start with were apparently very, very wrong). Fml.

The Associated Press and other news organizations have had to withdraw stories reporting that General Electric would pay a $3.2 billion tax refund to the U.S. Treasury after it was revealed that the stories were based on a hoax press release.

GE came under fire after a New York Times story that said despite $14.2 billion in worldwide profits - including more than $5 billion from U.S. operations - GE did not owe taxes in 2010. The story reported G.E. claimed a tax benefit that year of $3.2 billion. GE says the tax benefit claim is not true and that it received no rebate from the government on its 2010 taxes.

The hoax press release, which you can see here, claimed that GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt had informed the Obama administration that his company was returning $3.2 billion to the Treasury and "will furthermore adopt a host of new policies that secure its position as a leader in corporate social responsibility."

The release included what seem to be some pretty obvious fake quotes, including this, attributed to Immelt: "All seven of our foreign tax havens are entirely legal. But Americans have made it clear that they deplore laws that enable tax avoidance. While we owe it to our shareholders to use every legal loophole to maximize returns - we also owe something to the American people. We didn't write the laws that let us legally avoid paying taxes. Congress did. But we benefit from those laws, and now we'd like to share those benefits."

The AP nonetheless ran a four-paragraph story that began, "Facing criticism over the amount of taxes it pays, General Electric announced it will repay its entire $3.2 billion tax refund to the US Treasury on April 18."

You'd think that the least that could be expected of journalists would be to check the accuracy of purported news stories rather than serving as a mouthpiece for corporate propagandists. Then again, it is the frakking Associated Press we're talking about.

Also, I just spent $49.32 on gas. And my damn low fuel light wasn't even on. I want my solar fuel cell-powered flying car, dammit.

Meanwhile, Tax Day is a mere five days away and the average person is going to be thinking about their paltry or non-existent refund while reading all about how GE is skimming off $3.2 billion. It won't take much to make the connection between one's own taxes and the often negative effective tax rate of major conglomerates.

As an added bonus, it shows how eagerly the major media outlets grasp at anything that allows them to make their corporate masters look good&#8212;or at least less bad.

This is a sweet, sweet layer cake of expert punking.
