It wasn't tv tropes this time. I was lamenting the fact that I had to get up and go to work.

And I don't think anyone will ever have read all of tv tropes. New content is being added quickly enough that even if someone spent all their spare time reading it, they probably wouldn't be able to catch up.

On topic, a long list of work-related grievances plus one more traffic annoyance:

• The intercom at work isn't working. I don't think it's necessary to explain why this is a pain in the ass, but one of the things it means is that if you can't get in touch with someone (the line is busy, say, or they aren't picking them up), you don't have the option of paging them. You have to keep calling them, or else find out where they physically are in the store. It also means the usual procedure of directing someone on the phone to the appropriate department is much more complicated. If you don't know the phone number of the department, you're screwed. And if they don't hear you when you page them, you're also screwed.
• The phones themselves are a pretty big pain in the arse as well. For example, it's possible to disconnect someone if you forget to put them on hold before using the intercom feature. I've done this at least twice, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's also annoying when you pick up the phone to call someone at the exact same time as it starts ringing.
• At least two people have asked me for a copy of Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken. Which we're sold out of, except for the large print edition. I didn't even know we had a copy of the large print edition at the time they asked, either, so I couldn't offer it to them; I didn't think to check.
• It's starting to take the piss how often I have to submit items to title corrections. I think I submitted four titles today alone. They really need to do a better job researching how to categorise books.
• Sorting of authors' last names. You would think that a name like "Marquis de Sade" would go under D. Everyone says, "de Sade," they don't say "Sade." On the other hand, everyone says "Cervantes," they don't say "de Cervantes," so you'd think Don Quixote would go under C. But there's really no rhyme or reason to it. Even for cases where there is a clearly established rule, such as for Spanish names (there are two last names; you are supposed to alphabetise by the first of these two last names), the rules isn't always followed. For well-known authors like Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Gabriel García Marquez, it is (although for the former two of these, it wasn't even until recently, which has created more confusion), but for some others it isn't. This effectively has the result of requiring people to look in two places for an author's books if they have one of those weird two-word last names. And in some cases they have some of an author's books in one place and others in another, which is even worse.
• We couldn't locate some stupid book about alien abductions a customer ordered and had already paid for. I think we wasted at least one hour's worth of payroll looking for the damn thing because somebody made a stupid mistake. I expect they had to re-order it or refund the customer her money, but damn. The fact that the New Age section is an absolute frakking unnavigable disaster did not help.
• The summer reading tables. They're a big cash cow, which is nice, but they're always a mess and making sure all the required titles are on them is a constant struggle. Plus actually finding any of them always takes at least five minutes. Even if I spent an hour or two learning where everything was (which is obviously impractical), most of those titles would've been moved by the next day, because we're supposed to keep things in a pyramid shape, and that requires moving titles based on how many of them are in stock and how tall they stack up to be and so on.
• One of the lights right outside work has the shortest frakking timer, I swear. I think it let five cars through per lane. Naturally, it's a heavily trafficked street so that's nowhere near enough.

also the time has come~ Tomorrow I'm doing that five hour drive and I will be gone for a whole week so uh, bbl I guess. Hopefully... some good will come out of the trip and it won't be just plain miserable.

One of the major problems with not just America, but the entire world, is that people are either lazy, stupid, or both. Or something, I dunno. But it annoys the shit out of me when people ask a question that, if they took even five seconds to think about, would be able to come up with the answer on their own, or at least come up with an educated guess. Instead, everyone has to have everything fully explained and spelled out for them, instead of using their heads.

This creates an inherent weakness in the minds of the population.

this was claiming mendel did fruit fly experiments (he used pea plants) and claimed it was 'over a century old' (this episode was made in 2007) both of which are wrong. x-linked chromosome fruit fly experiments were performed by Thomas Hunt Morgan who did the experiments in 1910, certainly not over a century old (close but not quite).

Finally got someone to pick up the phone. Was the weekend person and turns out they don't have access to the stuff I need. They told me to leave a message, and when I said I did on Tuesday, he was surprised I hadn't been called back yet.

Fuck I wish he had said they had just been busy because I had gotten over this and was okay with that concept. Just saying fuck it and going to Toronto on Monday when someone I can talk to will be in. I just pray the days I need will be okay because I don't have a large window for this and my mom will be pissed because I already told her it was fine to get her off my back.
