"Because he's worth it."

They cherrypicked what they could be bothered to animate and what they couldn't. Oop, Red XIII's fur is too tricky! Let's lump him with Cait Sith as just another furry.

I think we all suspected as much.

Hmmm, I appear to be in the minority in this thread. Perhaps it is partially because I saw FFVII:AC/C before seeing the original FFVII games designs, but I like Tifa's AC/C look better than her original design.

And yeah, hair is a challenge to computer animate, it is not unique to SquareEnix, I remember how often in Pixar/Dreamworks DVD film commentaries they mention how hard it was animate a characters hair or fur or how much technology has improved to make hair/fur easier to animate.

I also recall them saying they had a really difficult time animating Cid's shirt.

The difference is Pixar doesn't shrink back from animating things even if it's difficult.

SE just flat out avoided it as much as they could.

Also, whichever you were exposed to first is irrelevant.

Not necessarily, sometimes what is familiar or what was experienced at younger age can influence one's aesthetic preferences.

I can run outside naked, but I won't so it's irrelevant.

Aesthetic preferences more often than not have fuck all to do nostalgia.

Well maybe not for you, but there are some people who openly admit that nostalgia does influence what they do or do not like.

Most of us are old enough here to keep nostalgia from affecting how feel regarding most things.

It's irrelevant.

That isn't really how nostalgia should work guys :monster:

Nostalgia doesn't influence what I do or don't like. Despite my nostalgic feelings toards stuff like FFVII or the animated Transformers movie, it doesn't blind me to the obvious flaws that either has, or make me overcompensate my opinion of their positives.

Well when seeing different versions of the same thing, people do tend to go for what they saw and fell in love with first.
Like, say, Sweeney Todd. People who saw the musical first love it more than the movie and visa versa. And Phantom of the Opera. Whether it be the old movie, new movie, or play, they like what they saw first.
But that doesn't mean it's always the case. But is often the case.

From here this seems to be a subjective argument because there's two camps on the matter. I've definitely heard of both types of people.

it's still irrelevant.

I'm pretty sure most of us know how to differentiate from quality and just nostalgic fondness.

The issue is, that people with silly opinions are still consumers of a product just like you or me, and it certainly isn't irrelevant to whoever is in charge of drawing up the characters. Square Enix, and most companies don't alter their creative direction to cater towards smart people; they alter their creative direction towards the people who give them money.

Well in any case, I agree that Tifa is looking her best in Dissidia. Her face is more like how I pictured it.
And while the dolphin tail thing isn't the end of the world to me, I do agree that they shouldn't have changed her eye color.

Does Dissidia use a different voice director than Compilation stuff or Kingdom Hearts? I know a couple of the actors complained about the direction in Dissida (Kuja's definitely. I think someone here mentioned Burton talking about it, but I've never actually seen evidence of that.)

I know the mainstay of the Final Fantasies (X, XII, XIII) is Jack Fleutcher and he's pretty damn amazing. Also all the VA's talk about how great he is so I don't think Dissidia's VA director is him.

But I know he doesn't do KH. Or Compilation. I think those are held under Disney, at least AC/C seems to have some cooperation when it comes to merchandise. Dissidia doesn't so I bet it's different.

My post is extremely useless.

Yup, Fletcher didn't work on Dissidia. According to IMDB, Bob Buchholz was the English director. He worked in the same capacity for the Compilation titles, Kingdom Hearts games and The World Ends with You.

I don't think Tifa's Dissidia voice was bad per se. But she didn't match what she's done previously, more specifically Advent Children. Her voice was... off. Some of the battle quotes were a little clunky. Not just her though, there were a few. (it sort of makes me think of FFX where occassionally lines just weren't delivered well, but it didn't ruin the overall feel of the moment or game)

I think my main problem is that playing FFVII... I spent almost a decade with the characters unvoiced in my head. So when I heard their casting I always feel like "No... that's not quite right."

Tifa is like that for me. She's not bad but I feel like it's not what I imagined it. Dissidia feels all over the place. I remember when we only heard one second of clip and we all freaked out, but then more came out and her voice was completely different. I feel like there are times where it is unnaturally high and other times where it is more like her.

All things considered it could be worse. KHII Aerith, or god forbid Cid's VA (which I can't stand to listen too). Zidane and Kuja maybe the wors offender in my opinion, but Kuja got much better in Dissidia:012, apparently because he talked with the fans. So good on him I guess.

idk, Tifa's AC/C voice didn't bother me at all. I kind of liked it. But it was different in Dissidia. As you say, at times too high-pitched, sometimes "too gentle", other times just lines weren't delivered properly. (Although line delivery is the fault of the director).

I really like Cloud's voice (I know people don't agree). Although he's been getting duller and duller with his deliveries.

Kuja's voice was an improvement. Agree. I think Tidus' VA is getting better each time too.

And I know what you mean about how characters that were previously silent are given voices. Bartz... is just not how I pictured him. Like at all. Bartz was never a dork. He was just a silly, but cool adventurer.
