Tifa's Design: Has It Gotten Better?

I never liked Cloud's VA. Part of it might come from the fact that I disagree with what they've done with Cloud as a whole though. I think that might be a problem with a lot of the depictions, they don't really know the extent of their character.

Sephiroth, though, is flawless. In both versions. I honestly can't think of a better voice for him. The only other voice I can think of is Vincent being voiced as Steve Blum, and Steve Blum does a perfect Steve Blum. Which is also good for Vincent so that's okay.

For whatever Cook's problems, she's still better than Ito, imo. Screechy Tifa no thanks. But yes, both she and Burton are worse in Dissidia. Burton in particular seemed to improve with each subsequent Compilation title. AC < DC < CC < ACC but then takes a big step backwards for the Dissidia games. And if they have the same director, I can't think of an explanation for that. Unless the whole process is more rushed for all the characters they have to get through.

As for characters that were previously silent...they just all effectively had my voice. So while I can disagree with the delivery of a line that I would previously read to myself in a different way, I haven't found that I'm loyal to some nebulous fantasy voice in my head.

And I'm sorry...I've pulled this way off topic.

Your opinion is terrible.

They both suck. Ito's Tifa isn't "screechy", it's more mousey and weak. Do not want.

Sephiroth and Vincent are shit too. Bored Superman and Steve Blum for the seven thousandth time, no thanks.

Yeah like in the scene where she speaks to Cloud and he's saying "WE R ENEMIEZ!1" she just sounds like she's really high on drugs. Kinda like how Aerith sounded in AC, lol. And KH2. *shudders*

aw, I like Sephiroth's voice :sadpanda:

I find his voice suitable for Sephiroth. It works, for the most part. But sure, that moment in KH2 "The light doesn't suit you" sounded a bit off, which may or may not have been George Newbern's fault. Anyway, that's just nitpicking. Newbern makes a good Sephiroth.

His voice never suited Sephiroth's personality at all for me.

He sounds too bored and monotonous. Wheres the arrogant haughty tone? Meh.

He doesn't sound haughty and arrogant in Japanese at all, he sounds frightening. Which works very very well - in Advent Children at least. I think Newbern's is the one that sounds more condescending and cocky. (the "On your knees..." line, for instance.) Again, he's not as good in Dissidia as seems to be the case with everyone, I'm not sure what the deal is with that game.

I'm with Splintered, I think they did pretty well with Sephiroth in both languages, they're just different spins on the character. Much like Cowboy Bebop, speaking of Blum. Both languages are very good while being pretty different they just both work.

(And Ito is definitely screechy in the Loz fight.)

Bull, he definitely had his moments.

Lolrite.

Newbern doesn't sound like anything other than newbern reading a script.

She definitely isn't. She yelps like a small animal. I think you're confusing actual screeching with something else.

I never once thought Sephiroth sounded frightening, lol. I never expected Kuja to sound flamboyant, either. >_>; Because he didn't ACT that way. Idk, some of the voices just ruin it for me and I go back to playing the games where there are no voices and everything is happy. :awesome:

That's the issue with giving characters from an established franchise voices.

You can ruin people's impressions of a character and sour them for everyone. Like Cid, I never thought Cid sounded like such a goddamn hillybilly. I likened him to the kind of southern voice Sawyer in Lost had.

whoa whoa whoa, I dont know if I came late to the party or.....was this thread supossed to be a TIFA DESIGN ONE?(oh well I came late it seems) but well back to topic, and I mean TIFA.

I will cash my 2 cents fast

I believe that Tifa's disign got better every time, my favorite is the AC of course. Also I think that her original design was created to attract gamers, and, pretty much if Im not mistaken FFVII was the first FF to come to america, so they wanted to attract us.But Tifa's role in FFVII has been much more than a sex symbol, thats for sure

The voice subject is a complicated one. While, for example, I liked Kain's voice enough, I never imagined it like that. I would give my opinion on the other characters' voices, but I think this is a Tifa thread so...

On topic: I do think Tifa looks good in Dissidia, but I don't think it respects her original design enough. She whould have had longer hair (not necessarily the dolphin tail, but longer hair), red eyes and, let's say it, a bit bigger on the front. I'm not particularly bothered with this stuff, most of the time (Although, who wouldn't like Tifa for her assets? :awesome: I know I do), but her original design was bigger up there. Even in ACC she seemed more gifted than in Dissidia. I still love the way she looks in there, but that's my opinion. For a game that's supposed to respect their original designs quite a lot, she was rather "changed".

@NIGHT; FFI (as FFI), FFIV (as FFII) and FFVI (as FFIII) were released in America before FFVII. I'm not sure if perhaps VII was the first one to come to Europe? But still, Tifa was designed the way she was for whatever reason, but definitely NOT to attract American gamers.

whoa I dint know that I read somewhere that FFVII was the first to come to USA, pretty much the first FF to go overseas, seems I got mistaken. If thats true then Tifa was not created to attract american gamers, but to gamers in general :)

Hey has anyone got a copy of the infamous 'program boy' advert for FFVII?

Ahh nevermind here it is! : http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/4071/16374557sa6.jpg

Yeah so, while you were mistaken that FFVII was the first FF to find it's way to the US. Some bright spark decided Tifa's titties were a good way of selling the game, though whether that was down to Square US themselves or they outsourced the marketing to someone else I don't know.

......what the hell is a 'program boy'? Is Yop a program boy?

Tifa was designed the way because of horny japanese businessmen.

I was talking about whether the decision to have her tits take up 1/4 of the image was to do with Square's US branch or a separate ad company.

I can't remember where it was...but there was a quote from Nomura I believe talking about when they were designing Tifa and they were choosing between shorts or a mini skirt and then they went with the mini skirt. Don't know if this was a concious decision to go for the sexier option or what.

The thing is, prior to FFVII there had been scantilly clad females. Eg Celes outfit is essentially a one piece with a cape. Its just that those FF's had a more fantastical setting so it was forgiven to an extent, a bit like how nudity is forgiven in classical art but frowned upon in modern photography (by some quarters) As has already been said Tifa's outfit is a little too earthly though, and there is nothing about it that is particularly 'fantasy'.

The cynic in me wonders if the success of a certain Ms Croft had anything to with their design decisions, however given that the two games were released only a few months apart I doubt it :monster:

I was 7 years old when I played FFVI. I really thought Celes was wearing a one-piece green swimsuit.

In FF7 I didn't realize Tifa was wearing a mini skirt for a long time because when she kicked or ran the way the polygons split apart made it look like shorts. I wasn't a fan of the mini-skirt, or her cartoonish proportions. That got better in AC but the one thing I really don't understand is the buttcape.

It was jeans, and everyone in the office voted for the skirt.
