LAST WEEK’S TRIVIA ANSWERS:
  1. D. ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by the Buggles
    • The new cable channel was out to pioneer a new frontier in music broadcasting and for that, it’s first few minutes on air were very appropriate. At 12:01 a.m. Aug. 1, they played footage of 1981’s space shuttle launch and the 1969 moon landing (both set to rock music), followed by the first music video in the channel’s history -- the Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.”
      source
  2. C. The Harp
    • The first coins minted in Ireland were produced in about 995 AD in Dublin for King Sitric, the Hiberno-Norse King of Dublin. These penny coins bore the head and name of the king and the word Dyflin for Dublin. John of England was among the first Anglo-Norman monarchs to mint coins in Ireland; these were farthings, halfpennies and pennies. It was not until the reign of Henry VIII that Irish coins bore the harp and, later in Henry's reign, the year. In the following centuries gold, silver and coppercoins were issued, and at one time, metal from melted-down gun barrels was used; this was called "gun money". Coins issued in the 18th and 19th centuries often included the word Hibernia on the harp side.

  3. A. Billie Jean
    • According to Q Magazine, as quoted by Songfacts.com, that wondrous piece of bass music was written by [Michael Jackson], who spent more than three weeks perfecting it.

For Wild, well,
came to mind. Aside from the song's title, the reason I associate this song is mainly due to the piercing high-pitched sound it uses at the beginning (and throughout) the song. In addition to being memorable because I had to brace myself when I heard that intro, the song could also be heard across the room despite being played through earphones on a sensible setting.

is an intense cover of a Touhou track which I actually heard before I knew what Touhou was.

As far as overrated songs go, well I don't have many answers because I simply don't care about people's taste in pop music and I understand I have different tastes, but (*prepares for hate*) of Michael Jackson songs, why is Man in the Mirror so popular? It's gotta be the lyrics, right? Because his other popular songs sound so much cooler. I used to feel like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen was overrated but I think I kinda get that one. Despite its utter randomness.

Some time ago Tiësto's Adagio for Strings was considered the shit everywhere for many years. I never got it. It just has nothing on Ferry Corsten's version.

Hoorah, winner is me. Congrats to the other podium finishers.

To be cliché, Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf. Tried thinking and looking for other songs, but couldn't find something else I associate with a particular feel of "wildness" and being carefree n' all that kind of stuff in the limited time I gave myself :awesome:. Also I think the sounds in the song harken to something more natural (eg: the wilderness) than other songs that come to mind as well. I mean, sure electric guitar and electric organs are used, etc, but it doesn't seem synthetic :P.

Most over-rated song. Anything that appears in the Billboard Hot 100... but now that I'm looking at a list of songs that did such: Gotye "Now you're just somebody that I used to know". I have no clue why this song did remotely as well as it did.

The track,
, has this wild, frenetic energy that has a talent for putting me on edge with untapped agitation. I love that Kele's vocals are drowned out like the music is banging on the walls to escape out of the vessel that it's been contained in.

I think a whole load of shit is overrated. Wonderwall by Oasis, for example, I think is massively overrated, though sometimes I think people only like this song ironically anyway.

Every song that I've heard so far by Ed Sheeran has also been boring and unenjoyable, and I do not get the collective gaga over him. His voice is nice. That's kind of it? There was a time when Thinking Out Loud, and now Perfect, was played on every radio, on every playlist in every shop in existence and now every time I see Ed Sheeran's ginger ass face I have to try reeeeaally hard to suppress the urge to punch it.

I won't congratulate the trivia winners cause I'm salty. Who even tallied up the votes??? How do we know to trust them??? How can we tell that the system isn't broken?????? CongratsthoughyouguysyoudeserveitIguessFINE

Congrats to the trivia winners!!!

:O I feel like I have to respond to this since I offered up this song in Fancy's alphabet game! But no hate here - I actually quite agree that Man in the Mirror isn't as good as his other songs. I do love Michael Jackson though, and his fan base is so passionate and devoted to him, I would imagine he'd be able to drop any shitty single and it would make the top charts, no problem. :P

As for this week's theme, the one song that comes to mind immediately is Eminem's Just Lose It (hehe, speaking of Michael Jackson). He's got a TON of 'wild' songs but this one, I think, takes the cake. The beat itself is mellow, but from a lyrical perspective, the chorus is utterly ridiculous and the verses really capture his 'Slim Shady' alter ego in yet another parody mocking the pop culture of its time (early 2000's). I still remember how much controversy this song and music video caused in the industry back then...wild, indeed!

For overrated songs...I mean I can be here all day, but for some reason the one song that's sticking out right now is Hands to Myself by Selena Gomez. I think I liked this song at first, but now it just plain irritates me! It might be the synth-poppy-ness and that sparse, thumping beat, maybe? Perhaps her breathy vocals? Above all I think it's the clipped enunciation of, 'Can't-keep-my-hands-to-myself,' and throughout all her verses, that reminds me of some sort of musical depiction of a bunch of jumping ticks...I feel itchy just listening to it. [/hating]

What are your favourite songs to sing in the shower??

LAST WEEK’S TRIVIA ANSWERS:
  1. C. ‘The Fat Man’ by Fats Domino
    • In 1949, Domino recorded a song titled “The Fat Man” on Imperial Records that became a No. 1 hit on the R&B chart in 1950. That recording is regarded as one of the earliest rock `n roll songs, featuring a rolling piano along with Domino’s vocals. “The Fat Man” would sell one million copies by 1953.
      source
  2. A. Barbra Streisand
    • Streisand is the only act with No. 1 albums in each of the last six decades.
      source
  3. D.They’re all members of the ‘27 Club’
    • Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971. At the time, the coincidence gave rise to some comment but it was not until the death of Kurt Cobain at age 27, about two and a half decades later, that the idea of a "27 Club" began to catch on in public perception.

Yooo all the songs I love are bittersweet, it's so hard to choose just one.

At the top of my head though,
comes to mind, about reminiscing on the hopes and dreams we had in childhood before we were tainted by our unsavoury realities. Reminds me of lost innocence.

As for my latest shower favourite, it's been belting out
while practising the harmonies. BANGAAAA

Hmmm... hard. Wish to go with something less commonly referenced this week, so Joni Mitchell's Amelia shall have to do. Not familiar with the song myself. Found it in a list of bittersweet songs.

Favourite songs to sing in the shower... usually the same songs I sing in the kitchen and elsewhere. Going through a T-Rex phase at the moment.

Definitely Just My Imagination by The Temptations! A sweet little ballad about a man's love: he reflects on how lucky he is to have her, expresses how excited he is to marry, have kids, and build a home with her...but alas, it is just his imagination... :'(

Find me in a shower and all you'll hear is the entire song list from each act of Les Miserables.

^You'll also hear this whenever I'm drunk, but that's another story.

Finally answering my own shit lmao.

Wild song - Pretty much anything from the Pixies (especially Surfer Rosa) if I’m honest. I’m gonna pick Vamos because Black Francis screams a lot in it. Joey’s guitar though bruh what I would give to see this song performed live.

Grossly overrated song - Karma Police

I’m shitting you, I just wanted to get a reaction.

Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’

Not even gonna fucking link to it, cuz no one needs to hear it again.

And I’m not sure if it’s actually overrated or if I’m just traumatised because I heard it fucking non-stop during my last years in school.

Every time that song starts playing, I wanna hurt someone.

Sorry, I’ll chill, y’all didn’t come here to hear me rant about ultra violence.

Bittersweet - First some to come to my head is Noname’s ‘Bye Bye Baby.’

Lmao I’m pretty sure this song has been linked to at least three times already, but it’s such a goodie.

It sounds deceptively sweet on a first listen, but once you realise what it’s about and listen to those lyrics closely *the tears*.

My favourite songs to sing in the shower are LANA DEL REY SONGS, particularly from Born to Die cuz the acoustics are just right. That and a lot of Metric’s old shit.

That’s what’s up.

I been thinking all this whole time trying to come up with something for wild and I finally got it:

I just really, really feel like if you were tearing along in a car and this came on you could howl to it, you know? Like a throw it all to the wind kind of ecstasy.

And for bittersweet, I'm not sure, I'm gonna go with
even though Vic, the lead singer, always dedicates it to his current girlfriend, and parts of it are sweet, it's also like 'Darlin' I don't mean to beg but these thorns on the stem are nearly tearing up my skin', you know?

It was only a few years ago when I first heard this song, and folks were surprised I hadn't ever heard of it before. I didn't think much of it then, and I have forgotten what it sounds like now. Maybe I did listen to it when I was younger, and continued to forget about the experience :P.

*looks through lists of "the best sex songs of all time"*. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to go with "I'm gonna make love to you, woman" by Chef / Isaac Hayes :P. Just kidding, somewhat. I don't really have a favourite sex song off hand (just out of perfectionism), but I'd say "Cream" by Prince certainly comes to mind.

The last gig I went to was probably the only one I paid a ticket for: Cat Power at Hammersmith Apollo about a decade ago. This may actually be footage from that very event. A friend of mine is/was a huge fan, so I went with 'em.

Sex.
A mash-up cover of songs by Tweet and PARTYNEXTDOOR respectively, listening to
always gets me botherrrrred.

Last gig I went to was a small one in December at an underground bar by an unknown band, whose lead vocalist is a family friend, and it was fire. I remember her cover of 'No Diggity' gave me chills. I just wish I could remember the name of the band so I can spread the good word n shit.

EDIT: Their name is Kadimakara and they just came out with a new single, 'Helka'.
