Trace of Two Pasts novel discussion

I'll say it bluntly, but the Tifa part does have clotis parts, so I literally do not trust a clerith to translate them truthfully because we *still* have so many problems with people mistranslating and twisting stuff. I'm sorry but if it wasn't the case maybe I'd agree to trust him, but I can't at this stage.
I totally get your point, it's fine. On the other hand, we are likely to be getting a whole lot of scenes to compare and discuss here on the forum later on, because the interpretation and the translation choices will inevitably be different, so it's not half bad. It'll be fun for sure.

We do try to localise it a bit tbh, to make it flow better while keeping the meaning. Here and there - most of it is fine but sometimes while it flows well in Japanese, it's a bit weird in English and that's where I step up usually (conflating two sentences into one because they are too short, etc.). I think Stan doesn't do that.

Ody yeah, but in the meantime, this will have to do. I am not even sure they plan to release this ever in French so yeah.

I think Aerith might have been a bit young in the novel for any shipping to take place. She's like what... 7-13 years old? And I prefer it that way. Her gradually maturing perspective, while still retaining its child like aspect, is what gives her part of the novel its the charm. I think Ifalna's words at the start, which she recalls towards the end, very much describes the child in her that makes her so lovable.

『Never forget that feeling, okay?』

『The feeling that you’ll enjoy anything.』

Also, Elmyra's broom and Aerith's chair... I see they both have the ability to weaponize common household items :mon:

Was there even a lot of shipping stuff in the Aerith section? What I’ve seen so far doesn’t seem to have much of any

The problem is not Aerith's part, the problem is Tifa's part that does have some romance though ^^' Peko just translated a big chunk that leads to the promise, it just reads like a romance novel haha. It will be out later today, but it's already 1:20am here so I probably won't be able to post it here ^^'

In the end, no one had posted @odekopeko's translation lol so here it is.

Pages 12 to 24. I didn't have the time to proofread anything in the last two pages, but after reading them, I don't need to (see, a lot goes as is). The cloti moment is reallyyyyyyyyyyy full of romance. I feel fed lol.
this is so awesome, thank you guys

I'd actually prefer it if a cloti translated the Aerith chapter and a clerith translated the Tifa chapter, that way I get as little of the LTD as possible lol.

(Seriously though, I actually prefer that none of this nonsense be a thing)

It really isn't possible. For example, one of the lines Stan translated for Tifa is "That's really sick." but in context, it really is "Wow, you had it bad."

I don't know if it's because he translates literally, or if it's because it's the rudest way to translate that line (Tifa isn't rude), but how could I ever trust him doing a part that is utterly romantic like the one Peko just translated? Or really, *any* part at that point since she wouldn't sound like Tifa?

But it does exist, and having opposite camps translate each part would piss both groups of people and create even more chaos :monster:

It's best to just be straightforward and either translate in the most respectful and transparent way possible or just let each shipper camp do their thing until a official translation happens. This dynamic won't just go away, and conflict is best avoided.

0/10 for not having her say “this guy are sick”

That's sort of like the "You're sure messed up, Cloud!" line she had in the original game.

Perhaps because this shit ain't that important and most people know it. :monster: This "Republicans vs. Democrats Simulator" stuff is ... well, not quite as bad as the actual Republicans vs. Democrats nonsense, but it's, well, "really sick." :monster:

I was curious and looked up that line. In Japanese, it says

「重症だね……」

Put that through Google translate, which says "It's severe...", and the character 重症 itself seems to translate literally as "severe" with alternative meanings referring to serious illnesses.

I think he just translated that line literally. His Twitter feed seems pretty moderate to me, and it sounds like he's genuinely doing this to learn a third language. Translating in a third language is no easy task, especially in such a short time frame.

I supposed translation biases can happen unconsciously due to one's preferences so maybe he was careless and didn't think too much about it. I can see why clotis would totally prefer their favorite scenes done with as much care as possible. But yeah, I really don't think Stan meant to make Tifa sound rude there.

Just my 2c, but I don't think it really makes sense in English to tell someone "you had it bad" or "that's really sick" after they describe how they were being a little shit to their adopted mom who they also describe as struggling financially because of them. Especially when the person recollecting all of this is an adult, reflecting on their past and how they were a rebellious teen.

I think that kind of comment is better utilized on the people in the other threads who were writing posts about the english localization of the game lmao
