Don't get me wrong, I do like a cute story like that once in a while (the best I've read so far is a short ZackxTifa story by sekiharatae called Safe Bet along with some teeny super funny minor CloudxTifa story I can't find right now) but as I've gotten old and grumpy it just has to have more... snap to it.

I don't know how to elaborate on this without sounding like I'm into S&M...

Hm... maybe I should pick up the pencil again - I used to draw shitloads, but it came to a halt at 17. I did some sketches just a few weeks back, and it was actually crazy seeing how much I remembered, but even that was having the original of something in front of me. Drawing out of own imagination is so hard!

You're telling me! I've only recently got to grips with the graphics tablet....its like learning to draw all over again.

What I tend to try and do is find something I can use as a reference and then tweak it. Doesn't always work though!

Though to be honest I never got the 'obsessive' vibe from Elena. More of a 'crush on the older man in authority' kind of feeling.

It's a good exercise, doing that. Like trying to mind map what you're *actually* seeing (or was it the other way? )and then try to put the little dots representing the perspective on paper. Ugh. Feels like twisting my brain sometimes.

Here's a wonderful new crime/drama fic with a rollercoaster plot and fabulous witty dialogue; Tseng's the lead (a really great characterisation) but all our friends put in an appearance, and Reno's partner in crime is Yuffie. I can't recommend this one too highly.

What I fear is that my lack of words, basically, will result in me constantly repeating myself. I have written semi-ficcish smut before, and it came out a little flat. But, if I had someone look over it and re-write parts, it could work, I guess. (Isn't that what they call having a beta?)

Dunno. Maybe my English will make it look exotic somehow o_O

Damn, that girl is so talented... just the concept of Tseng on a unicorn is a ridiculous concept to get right, but she did it. The unicorn even looks like a horse -- horses are not easy to draw!

I think I'm going to cry....that is so wonderful. Even his expression....its like any second now its all going to dissapear, and he'll be sat at his desk saying 'Elena? Elena? Are you feeling alright? You said that you had a report for me.' and Elena will just be staring at him...and say 'oh yes...a.... report?....' and he'll just shake his head and say 'I think you should take the afternoon off, you don't seem well...and you've gone bright pink'

Sorry if this has been posted before. Or, I would assume y'all have been through the Tseng centered fics on ff.net, where this is also posted... but I'll post this anyway It's called "Tension". It's mostly TsengxElena centered, but also some RenoxRude (which I didn't read all of - it can be skipped without losing the plot. The story gets really interesting (and exciting!) in the end. I especially love the shooting scene in chapter 4 (Tseng's own head voice is awesome) and I also shamelessly adore the romantic dramaz in chapters 6-8, it is well written and very much squeeable even if it could have gone the other way with the plot line chosen.

Spoiler: General fic rant

I find it so hard to find properly written fics (smut or no smut - but we all know what's preferable ) where the characters are somewhat in character and the language is fluent and nice. I've started thinking of signs of a fic that warns me it's not good quality IMO - and the things I've come up with are:

- Paragraphs are too short. I dunno, to me quality fics have some length to each paragraph.
- Too much dialogue. Lines and lines of dialogue change is not necessary to get the point out
- "Sounds effects" in the dialogue -- "AAAHH!" should be "she screamed"
- Doesn't give some minimum amount of back story that sets the mood in the story. "Reno was at the bar" is not enough - why is he there? (Besides the obvious of course)
- Chapter names can often give a hint to if this is a lame story or not

So based on those things, does anyone have any hints to what authors/ fic sites I should check out? Or does anyone have anything to add to the list? One thing that can disappoint me is when a story looks good based on those rules above, the language is great, and then it turns into a sappy love story where it turns into a misplaced "I love you" and too much OOC... I mean how to catch early in the story that that's what it's going to come to?

Re your rant: I've found that many fic writers/readers complain if a paragraph is more than a couple of sentences long. I can only speculate as to the reason.

As for the signs of a good/bad fic. I think you've more or less covered everything. Though I would say that there isn't anything wrong with short paragraphs in themselves, and I'd rather that than lots of extraneous information that doesn't really contribute to the atmosphere or plot - padding.

The thing I like to do is the 'one chapter test' because I think if they haven't hooked you in after one chapter then they're probably not going to. Maybe that is harsh I dunno. Obviously I'm more likely to stick with it if I've been promised some smut though

Yes, the information has to be relevant and nicely written, and it has to contribute. I think it might be an age thing? Younger readers would probably not appreciate the elaborated parts as much, perhaps. The first example that comes to mind is the lovely Angeal fic LicoriceAllsorts posted in the Angeal club, the one with Gong-gil inspired by actual history. It's very detailed and could be considered "too much". I found it very good, but me at 17 probably wouldn't have.

The plot becomes somewhat silly in chapter 7, and there is a couple of minor "what, when was that established?" but the action, characters and cuteness pulls it through. It had me worried there for a while.

Yes. And sometimes I scroll to see if the smut is good before I even start reading it from the start

And the chapter 1 thing is like a book thing. If you're not interested by the first 5-10 pages, you develop this neutral feeling towards the book and it'll never be very good no matter how good it gets after a while. It's like a "I like it!" test... you have to immediately light up. "Yes, this is awesome!" "Early riser" was the second fic I read by Sister Coyote, and it had me going "YES!" immediately. She just knows.
