What KD album should I get first?

Frank Zappa - Montreal

Getting into a big Jazz Rock binge. Good springtime weather usually does that to me.

Idk. Depends what you're looking for. Choirs is essentially extremely heavy post-rock. Dowsing takes the formula on that album and adds all kinds of weird influences to it (the first half of "Aura on an Asylum Wall" has some jazz influence, for example). Blue Lambency is weird prog with some jazz influence (although there's no improv, so naturally it's compositional very different). It's also easily their weirdest album, which is saying a lot because they're all weird. Coyote is a mix of prog, goth, and chamber music. Stained Glass is subdued prog/post-rock. Two of the songs on Gamma Knife are influenced by chamber music and jazz fusion while the other three feel closest to black metal (though there are other influences on them as well). Hubardo takes all these influences and throws them into a melting pot; it was consciously crafted as a summation of the band's career thus far. Coffins on Io is a mixture of prog with goth, dark wave, and jazz influences and has been described as something like "retro-future prog". So which one you get largely depends what you're in the mood for, though my personal favourites are Choirs, Dowsing, Coyote, Hubardo, and Coffins. Opinions vary on the quality of some of these, but I personally like them all. I think Hubardo might be the best starting place for you, but it depends on your mood. Keep in mind most of the band's albums are growers; I didn't like most of them half as much on the first listen as I did on the tenth.

Don't forget to check out maudlin of the Well (Toby Driver's previous band), too. motW's material is as stylistically diverse as KD's but most of it falls under the umbrella of progressive death metal (Part the Second is progressive rock, and was also released for free on the Internet). The grower thing goes for motW as well. And make sure to get PsychoBells on vinyl. The remaster sounds way better, to the point where it drastically improved my opinion of the album (it's not a loudness war thing this time, just that the instrumental clarity was improved a lot).

Some of their releases are difficult to find, because they were self-released in limited quantities. Hubardo, which may be the best starting point for you, was only self-released in a limited-edition vinyl release of what I believe was around 500 copies, for example. It's a beautiful package, too, with a black/clear swirl vinyl that looks awesome and some gorgeous artwork (as well as a poem by a friend of the band entitled "The Sword of Satan"). Coffins and Choirs will probably be the easiest to find because they were released by larger record labels (Flenser and Tzadik, respectively). You might also just try to sample some tracks from each release on YouTube and see which album interests you most. Tracks I recommend starting with from each release:

Choirs: "The Manifold Curiosity", "The Antique"
Dowsing: "Gemini Becoming the Tripod", "___ On Limpid Form"
Blue Lambency: "Blue Lambency Downward", "Symmetrical Arizona"
Coyote: "Abyss Hinge 2: The Shrinking Armature"
Stained Glass: There's only one song (except on the vinyl, which has a stripped-down mix of it on the B-side)
Gamma Knife: The songs are so different that I don't know if any one of them could be considered representative
Hubardo: Same deal as Gamma Knife, but "Passing the River" and "The Wait of the World" are my favourites
Coffins on Io: "The Mortality of Doves", "Library Subterranean", "Spirit Photography"

If you start out with one of these songs, make it "The Wait of the World". It's kind of a mixture of early Magma, King Crimson, and In a Silent Way-era Miles Davis, and it's just as enthralling as that description makes it sound.

Btw, I added some stuff to my last post so make sure you read the new parts :monster:

I've heard quite some motW stuff, actually. Never picked up anything by them neither though. Too bad I didn't have enough money at Roadburn, I think they had 4 or so LP's with them.

Get some Audioslave-ish vibes from it here and there. Decent track but the whole album was all over the place. Still recommend if you like the work Brendon Small puts out on the Guitar though.
