What Comics Are You Reading?

Picked up Monstress #4 by Image Comics, DC's Harley Quinn Road Trip Special #1, from November of last year (little slow on the uptake), a Marvel one-shot called Fear Itself: The Black Widow, and the first comic in a series of four called Venus, by Boom Studios. The last one looked intriguing, so I thought I'd give it a try.

ALL-NEW ALL-DIFFERENT
• Contest of Champions #6 (Battleworld is back & the Ultimates are investigating! Hell. Yes.)
• Totally Awesome Hulk #4 (answers to Banner's story & a damn fine first arc)
• Ultimates #5 (daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn)
• Uncanny X-Men #5 (still fantastic)
• Venom Space Knight #5 (I just love this series. It's hit its stride wonderfully)

STAR WARS
• Obi-Wan & Anakin #3 (interesting developments for Anakin)
• Star Wars #17 (so Han WAS a Nerf Herder! Decent issue)

DC
• Harley Quinn #26 (a fun cinematic nod and interesting start)

IDW
• TMNT #56 (LEATHERHEAD AND HOLY FUCK THAT ENDING!!)

ONI
• Invader Zim #8 (Literally a perfect issue. 100%. In every way. I am floored.)

BOOM!
• Bill & Ted Go to Hell #2

I love weeks like this where I get the full versatility of comics that I'm hooked on.

I've really fallen behind on my comics. Ever since I got my own place I just can't afford to read what I was reading previously. :sadpanda:

I'll probably re-subscribe to Marvel Unlimited and read everything six months late. :monster:

Then maybe I can get back to non-Marvel stuff like Saga and Bitch Planet.

I really hope at the end of the day they make a compendium for all of the Marvel Star Wars comics. I've been eyeballing collections on Ebay but can't bring myself to click the buy button. :sadpanda:

Thanks for the heads up. Forgot that was this week.

There were things I liked, but plenty else I didn't care for. Al Ewing is a good/fun writer, but he gets a lot of fundamental things wrong, both about characters and Marvel's metaphysical structure. He did well with the "Loki: Agent of Asgard" series, where he was paving some new ground for the most part, but where he thinks he is in this issue with
Thanos
-- he absolutely isn't.

Neither the concept of nothingness nor being outside reality is anything new to Thanos. He's not only intimately familiar with the cosmic abstracts, one of whom is Oblivion (brother to Eternity, Infinity, Death and Galactus), but he himself once destroyed Reality-616, found himself floating in the nothing space between universes, and then gave his life (a temporary condition obviously, as it always proves to be with him) to restore the universe and repair a fundamental flaw within it.

Arguably even more relevant here, though, Ewing seems to have written Galactus as subservient to Eternity when it was long ago recognized that he is essentially the cosmic abstract who serves the role of Balance between Eternity and Death. They recognize him as their brother.

And possibly even more relevant than that, Ewing continues to show a failure to recognize the difference between the Multiverse and the Omniverse. And even more egregiously than that, he seems to have portrayed Eternity as representing all that exists in all realities, when every universe has always had its own Eternity -- because that's what an Eternity is: The embodiment of a single universe.

It also doesn't make sense that going outside an Eternity would allow others to instantly notice the chains, as numerous characters (Thanos, Adam Warlock, the Silver Surfer, Galactus for that matter, etc.) have ventured outside Eternity and seen no such thing.

So, yeah, lots of issues here. I do appreciate the stab at an actual self-aware meta explanation for Marvel's sliding timescale -- though it seems Ewing was unwilling to commit to it being authentic -- and I, of course, always appreciate Thanos getting some attention, but enjoyable a read as this book is (and as much as I love the illustrations), it's striking me as off, poorly researched, impossible to reconcile with what should be in place even in a rebooted Marvel Multiverse, and difficult to invest very much in.

Marvel
The Mighty Thor #4 and #5

BOOM! Studios
Venus #2 and #3

I highly recommend Venus. It's a little 4-part series, with the 4th one not being out yet, but it's a pretty cool sci-fi comic.

I've been taking a break from Marvel since Secret Wars ended. Not for any real reason; I just haven't felt like reading anything else they have yet.

I just bought the Fullmetal Alchemist box set, so I'm working through that now.

How'd you like April Fool's Special X? I'm about to go out and pick it up in a little bit.

EDIT:

Actually nvm, I don't think it comes out in my comic shop until tomorrow, which is perfect because they'll be opening right as I get off work.
