I bought Kerbal Space Program the other day; I had played the demo aeons ago and I guess I just didn't get it. But, watched some tutorials and I'm a convert now.
Today was... interesting. Built a new booster that could get 7 tonnes comfortably into space, and figured I'd try a manned munlanding. That... kinda went the wrong way. I think my lander was just too big, it would cost too much fuel to slow it down enough to land, if I even managed (it was probably too tall too, the pictures on the internets all have really wide ones). After trying if I could get low approaches or something and at least getting some Science to take home, I tried to get back.
whiiich didn't go well. I managed to get into high orbit (like over 100K high) before I was all out of fuel. At that point I had closed the game and reloaded it and shit, so there was no way back - I should make a solid save before every important mission really.
So, rescue mission, go! I tried to build an unmanned ship first, the idea was that it'd push the ship out of orbit. Didn't go great, didn't manage to get into the same orbit / a rendez-vous going on. Plus it didn't have the automagic stability control. And it ran out of power. Whoops.
So I went for the other option and recruited Valentina Kerbal to go and rescue Jeb. Built a ship with a regular cone and a lander module. First time was fail because I put the RCS fuel in the wrong location. Second attempt... idk, maybe that's the one that worked, maybe I started again.
Third one was... Not great. I managed to get in close, but properly matching the other module in speed was a pain (I should redo the tutorial(s), maybe. Or get moar fuel). I eventually managed to get sorta close enough. Instead of trying to move my (heavy-ish) ship closer to the stranded module though, I instead switched ships and had Jeb do an EVA. 13 kilometers through empty spaec, and somehow, he made it, too.
...only to find out you can't actually access the lander module from inside space,
. I googled how to transfer a pilot from one module to the other in the ship itself though, so he could hop into the pilot seat.
Now, I was kinda low on fuel at this point, but I burned at the right point anyway - good for about half the speed reduction I needed. I had loads of RCS fuel left, which was enough to get me down to a good re-entry vector.
One of my external batteries asploded during re-entry which made me shit a brick, but other than that, it's all good. I just wish I had Jeb take the science from the lander before having him transfer ships,
