So, the X games are free to play on Steam this weekend. Started off with X3: Terran Revolution because I thought it was the newest one; I could see potential, but it's kinda low-tech and very rough around the edges. I can see how it would be kinda like Eve Offline, but ehh, it would need more polish for that.

But then today I gathered that it wasn't actually the newest, and X: Rebirth is, :monster:. That game has been out for a while, but I'll just assume it was out for most of that time as early access / public beta; the reviews are still generally negative because for over a year since launch it was full of bugs and missing features and shit. But, the current version is finally up to spec.

TL;DR, it's what I think games like Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous can only aspire to be sorta like. I'm going to say it's the best space sim out there, and it makes me want to build a setup involving a fancy joystick, a comfy chair, a big screen TV / projector, and a weekend full of fuck y'all.

Off course I'm probably wrong and I'll soon discover that I've already seen all the game has to offer already, but hey.

It makes me want CCP and Egosoft (the company that has been sticking to the X games since 1999 and who also made UGH, a random platform game involving a caveman which was funny back when) to merge and make X Online, combining first-person space captaining with a real online world thing, because I just know that it could work. For a certain niche, that is.

(remind me to buy it tomorrow while it's still a 66% discount)

l'edit: I just died; the game could do with a bit more feedback that you're getting shot at, and more straightforward info on how to avoid getting shot at. I'll probably lower the difficulty like the filthy casual I am.

Just got back into Skyrim over the past few days. Feel like I'm procastinating over playing things I should be getting on with, therefore this is the game I play when I have no clue what to do. :monster:

Why do you think it's what Star Citizen and Elite can only aspire to be?

Just going by what I know right now really: Star Citizen so far seems more like spaceships in space (?), i.e. fancy-looking ships, but not really much in the ways of gameplay - yet, anyway. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be a space sim in the combat + trading + building a space empire kinda way, too - just the combat. It's nowhere near done though, so I'll nuance my statement a bit.

Yeah, tried X: Rebirth, did not like it. is Terran Revolution better?

Only if you're German and more hardcore, :awesome:. X3 is seven years old and was built with a much lower budget; it looks worse, plays worse, has a steeper learning curve, etc. If you didn't like Rebirth, you probably won't like its predecessors.

Also I want to be a space captain :(. That, or build a more accessible 2d mobile space sim kinda thing. CBA though, I'll need to be rich enough to quit my jerb first.

X: Rebirth never had a early access/alpha period. It was released as a 100% completed retail game at £39.99. -_-

It was utterly broken at release. People with monster gaming rigs couldn't get it to run at anything other than the lowest graphics settings, huge features were missing and it crashed to desktop every 10 minutes. A week after release you still had to manually edit the games files because a tutorial mission was bugged, and editing the files was the only way to get around the problem and advance the plot. It remains the most broken/bugged game I've ever played.

I remember fans of the series saying "all X games are broken at release, in six months it'll be awesome!". X rebirth was supposed to introduce the franchise to new people, hence the name. Turns out selling a broken product at 40 quid wasn't the relaunch of the series they hoped it would be. I looked at the wiki, it's had 25 patches.

The Steam forums were a shit storm after release.
I'll be honest, it was fun to watch the regular folks legitimately ask wtf whilst the fans with Stockholm syndrome defended it to the hills.

Maybe the fans were right, after all the patches and free DLC maybe it is worth playing now.
But it earned those negative reviews. It was unplayable.

Yeah I read those responses, and I'm still running into some issues myself (mostly behaviour of ships I don't control myself). And the main storyline has some hitches when it comes to certain stages - right now for example I have to build a starbase, but that required first a lot of money (and I hadn't set up a trade network or whatever), and then loads of materials I didn't have a source for yet so I had to do a lot of flying around - takes away the pacing.

But yeah, put it like that and they released an alpha version initially at a far too high price. They should've gone with the early access model, that way they could evolve instead of having to pick up the pieces over a year after release. On the plus side, it has a campaign / story at least, :monster:

Also, sorta back to eve on occasion, we're gonna start a TLS company with me, Joe, and Carlie if we can get her to stay / play moar.

Played a bit of GTA V for PS4 last night and had a ball for the hour I played before bed. I really should finish the story on PS3, as it's now eighteen months since it was first released. Might focus on that this weekend when I'm not busy.

My brother gave me his 3DS since he got a New 3DS. Also lent me Zelda ALBW, Bravely Default and Kirby Triple Deluxe. So I guess that's what I'm gonna be playing now. :awesome:

Bloodborne all morning. So damn good.

Time to initiate "operation lose your job due to attendance issues"

"Fear the old blood, but remember common sense" one message said around Vicar Amelia's boss room. I'd say it's appropriate here but who cares about appropriate when Hidetaka's directing the game.

I'm loving it myself. What build are you going with?

Eternal Sonata...I think I've gone and quit playing it though...apparently I really liked this game when it first came out but now I'd rather dash my head against a wall. :[

I feel like I should probably avoid playing Bloodborne because it would just end up being thrown out the window when stuff like this happens.

Won't argue. There're few stings like losing 30,000 souls on a handful of repeated treks through the forest. That... Situation? That's the kind of thing you've just got to laugh at, that gif thingy. Builds character, becoming self aware of the negative reinforcement and trial by error at play in these games.

The game's fairly open handed about it's heals, it's confident it can pose a threat even if you run into one of it's monstrosities with a lot of vials and a full health bar. Yes, it's a very well balanced game.

So. If you're good there's a... Chance you'll win, if you're bad there'll be no helping it anyway. I'd love to say give it a try, but you know yourself better than me, how far your tolerance goes. It's an incredible game? I can say that at least. It's nailed atmosphere like no game I've played before, save maybe Majora's Mask.

Oh the game is fantastic, I just don't have the patience required to play the whole thing. I am going to end up playing it but after it has a few price drops.
