30 Days of FF Themes [Music]

I thought the ending FMV theme would be nice mainly because some of the music pieces are absolutely beautiful.

I like the idea of a misc. theme as well, there's tons of FF songs that wouldn't fit into the categories but are memorable in their own way

I'll save Terra's Theme for another day, so I'll say that my favourite World Map themes are VII's and IX's.

Her theme is so epic, it should be allowed to be applied to more than just one day. Just sayin'.

4. Best playable character theme

You probably knew this was coming:

Spoiler: Awakening (which is used as Terra's theme throughout FFVI).

FFVI has a lot of great character themes:

(the

Spoiler: version used in flashbacks

is also worthy of note),

Spoiler: Cayenne's theme,

Spoiler: Shadow's theme,

and of course

Spoiler: Celes' theme

round out the best character themes from that game, in my view, although nearly all of them are masterpieces.

Other great character themes from other games include

Spoiler: Rydia's,

Spoiler: Lenna's,

Spoiler: Aerith's,

and

Spoiler: Cid's,

although these are hardly the only great occurrences. I had half a mind to list at least half the character themes from IX, but I'm getting bored of looking up YouTube videos, mostly because Flash keeps making Chrome lag. Those themes are up to the quality of these though.

That said, Terra's theme > *.

Day 4: Terra's Theme ftw!!!! BEST SONG EVER. It's also my favorite FF song out of any of them.

A very close second is Tifa's Theme from FFVII and its AC piano upgrade:

Snow's Theme from FFXIII is also right up there for its badassery:

I also like a lot of the ones Aaron mentioned, plus Lulu's theme of FFX is pretty as well:

Oh, definitely Lulu's theme. So mystical .

Followed by Aerith's theme (especially the orchestral version used when she dies). Rinoa's theme's quite soothing. FFIX's Beatrix was playable, right? I don't mind her theme either.

Ah man, fave character theme is a tough choice. I'm gonna go with Freya's - it has such a wonderful melancholy to it - but really I love a lot of the character themes.

Day 4: Best playable character theme

It was really tough but I think this one is always gonna be my favourite character theme.

Every time I hear Cid's theme I get goosebumps, I thought it was brilliant when it was played before the party goes to Midgar on disc 2, there's something very emotional about it plus its really cool to hear if you decide to chase Ultima Weapon around the world before you go there.

Most of the ones I like a lot have been mentioned, so I'll give a shout out to this little gem that never gets any love:

Love Faris' song. I think Red's gets overlooked since its almost identical to both Cosmo Canyon and Great Warrior.

Day 5: Best villain (not final battle) theme

Yet another tough one. Tiff already posted Kuja's, which is a good one, as is his We Will Rock You theme. But I'm divided between two that could not be more different:

Seriously, they are both awesome portrayals of the villain they represent, but so unbelievably different. Sephiroth's is ominous to the core. From the heartbeat drums to the minor key, to the pseudo-vocals. It is intimidation in song. Kefka's is simplistic and silly, but is still able to be imposing, somehow. And the way Dancing Mad alludes to it in the middle is fantastic.

Yep. Though it is worth pointing out that Kefka actually has two themes. There is also the theme from the

Spoiler: Fanatics' tower,

which is used to represent him in the second half of the game. I think it fits his transformation in the second half of the game nicely, but I prefer the theme from the first half of the game.

I also just realised

Spoiler: Dark Messenger

isn't a final boss theme so add that to my list of favourite boss battle themes from day 3.

edit: because I'm bored, have more versions of Kuja's theme.

Villain theme, non-final battle, eh... Kuja's theme millennium version, or whatever it is. Despite popular belief, the drum beat (tum tum ta, tum tee-tee ta) is different from Queen's "We will rock you" (tum tum ta, tum tum ta). That combined with the background piano theme, and the two songs are nothing alike =p. </needless defensive mode>

Succession of Witches... Edea's theme? If so, second place. Garland's theme (ff9) third place. Most villain music I like is final boss stuff =p.

If I'm not mistaken, Uematsu himself admitted it was an homage to Queen. Too lazy to try to find the interview where he said so though.

Well its not like it was the first time. (FF7 Chocobo -> Wipeout, FFVI Emergency -> Mission Impossible, etc.)

FF8 Chocobo -> The Who, other FF7 Chocobo -> Dave Brubeck's "Take Five". Yeah there are a lot of homages to classic rock and other genres in Uematsu's music.

edit: I forgot Golbez's theme. One of the organ motifs is taken note-for-note from the fugue part of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.

Since I learned that the intro to "One-Winged Angel"=Hendrix's "Purple Haze," I can't take the end of Final Fantasy VII seriously.

Day 5 (Already? This is too much fun):

Villains tend to have my favorite pieces. VII's are the best. Sephiroth's is great, but the Shinra theme manages to sound simple, eerie, and colossal at once. Works.

Also - Queen.
