I realize this discussion was dropped a while ago, but having now seen the movie, I'd like to comment.
I think the very fact of Sephiroth not putting the sword in his face instead of those other spots would be why many don't feel Sephiroth was taking it as seriously as Cloud. Obviously Cloud would have liked to end it at the first opportunity. Sephiroth didn't, and putting the sword through his leg such that it came out a few inches from his face instead of right into his face would be the very proof of it.
That's not to say that Sephiroth didn't intend to kill him before he was done, or even -- as you say -- that he hadn't already delivered mortal wounds. He hadn't, however, delivered a fatal blow, despite the opportunity to.
That's also not to say that he didn't intend to finish him when he was diving toward him after the "what you cherish most" line. I agree that it was intended to be the finishing blow. I'd just say that Sephiroth wasn't taking it seriously in the sense that he felt desperate or anxious. He was sure he was going to win and he took his time with it. That's why we see him dropping a quote like that before diving in instead of just doing it.
So, I think it's best put like this: Sephiroth was serious about killing Cloud, but he wasn't taking the fight seriously. At least not until Cloud pulled out that new Omnislash and started flying.
I don't see how anyone can argue that he was "playing around" for the entire bloody fight.
I just don't. All it would have take was Cloud taking that sword in the face instead of just his leg and that would have been it for him.
