Here's something that I figured all of you nerds would enjoy.

During an event at a Barnes & Noble to promote his newest book, Terry Pratchett himself talks a tiny bit about Doctor Who.

Today at B&N at Union Square, NYC, Terry Pratchett and Rob Wilkins had a discussion about Terry’s new book Dodger. The conversation was wonderfully derailed several times, and they got to share other Pratchett news about The Watch TV series and Nation and so on (I’ll be sharing those on this blog in forthcoming posts), as well as tangents about things like Doctor Who. Below is the transcript and video of Sir Terry’s opinion on the casting of the Doctor.

Rob: David Tennant could play anyone. He could play Moist von Lipwig.

Terry: I was there for the first episode of Doctor Who. The thing about Doctor Who, if you are a real Doctor Who fan, you might know that when the BBC put it out, not many people watched the first episode, but those that did were telling people about it. So, on the next Saturday, they repeated the first one so that people could see what it was all about. Just a piece of trivia, but there it is, because I was there, hiding behind the settee.

Rob: William Hartnell was no David Tennant, though, I’m sorry.

Terry: No, but David Tennant is a definite David Tennant. He is the best Doctor Who of ever because he is an actor. The best of them are…funny, the modern ones are just bloody clowns. A bit like you [Rob], but nevermind.

Rob: That’s okay. I’ll audition for the part.

Terry: Ha!

The sarcastic tone of Coleman and Smith leads me to suspect that Clara Oswin may somehow indeed be the same character as Oswin Oswald, as many fans had suspected all along. Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.

I'm not sure if I'm digging him dressing like the Ninth Doctor, though. Although when you think about it,

Anyway, I just finished series one of Torchwood. It started out kind of uneven, but the show definitely started to find its footing towards the end of the first series, to the point where several of the episodes towards the end of the series rival a lot of the best Doctor Who work. Particularly strong episodes included "Out of Time", "Captain Jack Harkness" and "End of Days". I will also give a distinction to "Countrycide" of being one of the creepiest episodes of anything in the Whoniverse ever. Overall, great series. I'm sure series two will be even better.

In canon, the Eighth Doctor did keep his steampunk gentleman's attire as his main costume - although he did vary it sometimes in the novels, especially if he was stuck in one place for any length of time (at least one novel/novel arc had him spend several decades on Earth).

The Big Finish continuity - the Eighth Doctor has three possible continuities: Big Finish (primarily audio), BBC novels, and Doctor Who Magazine comic strips (any of which may or may not be canon, by Russell T Davies' reckoning) - has, so far, three arcs: the first arc are classic Doctor Who (First to Seventh) style adventures, "nuWho" style adventures (Ninth to present), and this is the beginning of the third arc, which seems to be the eve of the Time War (although the Great War in the new audio's title is actually our own World War I).

The second arc ended with the Eighth Doctor's companions being exterminated by the Daleks. Hence the change in attitude and attire.

And it's only similar to the Ninth Doctor's attire by way of the leather coat. Paul McGann has described the costume as a work in progress, so it will probably have changed by the time we next see it. The coat was custom made by Weta Workshop (most famous for Lord of the Rings). It's a leather pea coat, as McGann's family have a history of naval service.

But the Eighth Doctor is a very complicated area of the Doctor's timeline. Or timey wimey ball.

Small Worlds is probably the best Torchwood episode ever, IMO.
