Doctor Who!!~

• Missy & Clara's deaths were immediately revealed to be misdirection and the explanation involved little flashes of Classic Who and the Doctor's own tactics.
• Watching him and Davros attempt to play off of each others' wishes was really great, because they're playing chess - each playing a role to the other and faking their way along to the last possible moment. It really sold the whole dynamic of them as longstanding enemies, and the bits about Gallifrey and other things are interesting because I think a lot of it is coming from a genuine place in Davros, but he's only using those thoughts to achieve his own ends.
• The Daleks have used the word, "Mercy" back when confronting River, but I wasn't aware that the Doctor hadn't known that until now (which makes the River even more interesting), and giving them a Doctor-based cause for knowing that concept at all was really neat.

• The inner mechanics and workings of the Dalek were really interesting, as was their limited vocabulary, but it makes the Daleks themselves seem less hateful than the machines they're cased in forcing them to be that way that doesn't seem to mesh. It also doesn't feel like it matches with the setup we saw with Soufflé Girl - although admittedly that was more specifically brainwashing, but the communication limitations seems like they'd have impacted things there.
• Missy & Clara's interactions are really interesting, and while some of them are fun and have the whole cat-playing-with-a-mouse vibe to them, and have interesting little playful dynamics with Missy talking about the Doctor or their own past, sometimes the things in her dialogue feel a bit too… scripted? forced? I get that a lot of that comes with this Regeneration's mannerisms, but sometimes it's a little much that pulls me out of their current dialogue, but the rest of the time it's incredibly engaging -- I also really hope that (given that she's exiting this season) that we get to see why Missy sent her after 11 in the first place and by doing so, set off the whole Impossible Girl scenario.
• Colony Sarff is properly creepy and terrifying and I enjoyed it as a creature, but sometimes its use seems… strange? Like the final play to have the snakes use themselves as a power conduit seems less-than-logical, and given that it wasn't shown that they were anything more than normal snakes, it seems a bit out of left field.
• Wearable Tech. I really dig 12 in the sunglasses, and it echoes a bit of 10's 3D glasses mannerisms, but I'm not sure about it as a Sonic Screwdriver substitute.
• Hints about a hybrid prophesy. While I am interested to see them explore the Doctor's motivations about the TARDIS stealing him away and him constantly running (props to Capaldi's acting again during those bits) the possibility of a Dalek/Timelord feel too StarCraft II for my tastes, though depending on if that's misdirection or how they play it out, it MIGHT not be terrible.

Overall, I couldn't be happier about having two-parters, as they're what really make the show feel deep and immediately make me much more excited for this season than last season, and the mix of Classic Who elements gives this an utterly spectacular feel. While it isn't without its weak points, this is DAMN good.

So, they're making a spinoff series, called Class which is going to be able to the Coal Hill School kids. Aside from the fact that Clara & Danny have both worked there since the last season, and the kids have met the Doctor, I have to wonder if this is establishing a connection to Susan (the Doctor's granddaughter) like a bunch of us've been speculating about. Either way, I think that it's a super neat tie in to the oldest bits of Doctor Who, and I'm curious what all it's going to be about -- but given what it MIGHT connect to, it's unsurprising that there isn't much out there about it yet.

So, Doctor Who managed to find a story that made it explain The Bootstrap Paradox and deliver it in a way where it's intriguing and thought provoking, rather than just a get out of jail free card. It also ties it into the TARDIS acting in ways that it dislikes. Also- I fucking LOVE the intro/outro chat with the Doctor to the audience, and I'm really loving his guitar playing through the intro.

I just genuinely love everything about this series so far. Next week is MAISIE FUCKIN' WILLIAMS!!!!

Very good episode. very much got too the root of what the Doctor's back, got the whole Pompei thing out of the way and did a good job with Maisie. And judging by the preview, it looks like we are just about done with Clara and Maisie will be kept around as a temporary companion, at least. Best news

I have been loving this season, however, I was quite disappointed with The Women Who Lived. The subject matter was fantastic, and when they randomly touched on it, it was epic ... but those conversations were surrounded by constant comedy and a strange ambience. The quick shifts from comedy to ultra serious to mild was just too much to take and ruined the episode for me.

It could have been a seriously deep episode. Instead I felt it fall flat on its face because of the almost comedy romp constrictions that surrounded it.

It did prove one thing however. The show - and Capaldi - definitely felt like it could breathe without a certain someone around.

I liked all of the introspection about immortality (especially because I saw The Last Witch Hunter this weekend that also touched on that subject) and how the Doctor develops relationships with immortal entities differently than that of mortals. Additionally, I like the dynamic that he has on his own and having to discuss his methodology behind doing what he does, and I like that she exists behind the scenes a bit for him now. I think it's something he's always needed, and it's good that he has that now. Which is extra good, because...

She's gonna be back, along with Rigsy (from last season) in Episode 10...

Given that this is a two-part episode, I'm curious to see how they carry the sort of Right Wing Muslim paranoia plot that they're running with this.

Additionally, my mom lives in Truth or Consequences, which I found exceptionally amusing.

I am speechless.

The whole bombing / war scenario and Capaldi's performance was just chilling. That must rank up there as one of the greats.

I agree, the last first series with Capaldi left be a but cold, but this series is back on track to the Doctor Who I know and love it!

Yup. Hands down one of the best episodes that I can possibly remember seeing ever, and connects Capaldi to the rest of the things established in the 50th just brilliantly.

Sleep No More was pretty interesting, and I really liked how they utilised the 'found footage' style. It could have really done with an extra 5 minutes though to completely tie up loose ends, though I know he already has a follow-up planned.

And next week ... it's finally time! :awesome:

It felt like a weird Sci-fi B movie, and the monsters didn't make any sense to me. The lack of opening credits was also weird and I think I just felt strangely disconnected from everything in the episode, which I guess matches the ending, but still… o____o

So ...
Clara finally took one risk too many and there was just no way out for her this time. I loved how Me / Ashilder fabricated the entire mystery with Rigsby in order to entrap the Doctor. But the bigger question is: who employed her to trap the Doctor? And where exactly has he been sent to?

Unfortunately for Clara, these questions are more interesting than her death. I like (or tolerate) the girl, but, as you guys know, she should have left a long time ago. I didn't feel sad, and that's a shame, because I should have felt that emotion after everything that she and the Doctor have been through. I liked that she spoke of Danny one final time though.

The fallout is going to be epic. I can't wait!

I think that Clara's been living on borrowed time since her old age scene with Eleven, and her continued time with Twelve always felt like her being his friend and his caretaker from there on, and this death seemed to be more about her worries of how he will or won't cope with things, or what may become of him, rather than her personal tragedy -- hence why it feels less sad, because while she died, she did it doing something exceptionally important and no one was at fault or intended for her to die.

Tbh, the memorial TARDIS scene with Rigsy is when the impact actually hit me. I am curious if we'll ever find out why Missy sent Clara off to The Doctor way back when or not, but I think that this made for a good transition from her on to what The Doctor will do from here.

hence why it feels less sad, because while she died, she did it doing something exceptionally important and no one was at fault or intended for her to die.

This is why I didn't have any emotional response to it. Because it was set up as
Clara sacrificing herself only because she knew the Doctor would fix it, rather than Clara genuinely sacrificing herself for her friend. Obviously, it needed to be that way because of her risk-taking attitude, but at the same time, it just left me feeling: "well, serves you right, this is what happens!" I also agree with what others have said elsewhere that, aside from some mentions here and there, this build up of DoctorClara hasn't had much of a fallout really for the impact to really maximise in this episode.

I mean, Flatline is the only immediate thing that jumps to mind when the Doctor seriously calls her out on it, but ... the rest are just small mentions and comments here and there. Nothing more.

Having said that, yeah, the final shot of the TARDIS and the memorial was a really nice touch.

I am curious if we'll ever find out why Missy sent Clara off to The Doctor way back when or not, but I think that this made for a good transition from her on to what The Doctor will do from here.

I might be completely misremembering here but
didn't the last finale touch on that? It was simply that Missy thought she was a match for the Doctor and so sent her to him. Or is there more to it that hasn't been explained?

I am seriously looking forward to seeing the Doctor (and Capaldi) from here on out.
